Development of Wireless Techniques in Data and Power Transmission - Application for Particle Physics Detectors
Wireless techniques have developed extremely fast over the last decade and
using them for data and power transmission in particle physics detectors is not
science- fiction any more. During the last years several research groups have
independently thought of making it a reality. Wireless techniques became a
mature field for research and new developments might have impact on future
particle physics experiments. The Instrumentation Frontier was set up as a part
of the SnowMass 2013 Community Summer Study [1] to examine the instrumentation
R&D for the particle physics research over the coming decades: {\guillemotleft}
To succeed we need to make technical and scientific innovation a priority in
the field {\guillemotright}. Wireless data transmission was identified as one
of the innovations that could revolutionize the transmission of data out of the
detector. Power delivery was another challenge mentioned in the same report. We
propose a collaboration to identify the specific needs of different projects
that might benefit from wireless techniques. The objective is to provide a
common platform for research and development in order to optimize effectiveness
and cost, with the aim of designing and testing wireless demonstrators for
large instrumentation systems
Enzymatic synthesis of Tinuvin
Coupling of 3-(3-tert-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionic acid methylester to 1H-benzotriazole using a laccase from Trametes hirsuta was studied. The potentially resulting coupling product Tinuvin 1130 is an important UV-absorber used in polymer based materials. Oxidation of the phenol by the laccase led to homomolecular coupling reactions while the laccase did not attack 1H-benzotriazole. Due to the homomolecular reaction of the phenol in the presence of laccase coupling of phenol and 1H-benzotriazole was only observed when 1H-benzotriazole was applied in four-fold molar excess. The reaction was monitored by UV/vis spectroscopy, TLC and MS (ion trap) analysis. Coupling of 1H-benzotriazole took place in ortho position according to the postulated mechanism
Hydroxylation of polypropylene using the monooxygenase mutant 139-3 from Bacillus megaterium BM3
Enzymatic hydroxylation of polypropylene (PP) was investigated in order to increase hydrophilicity. A mutant (139-3) of the P450monooxygenase from Bacillus megaterium expressed in E. coli DH5α was purified using anion exchange chromatography. Hydroxylation of PP fabrics led to a dramatic increase of hydrophilicity as indicated by a water drop dissipation time of below 1 s compared to the hydrophobic reference material. Likewise, a 4.9 cm increase of rising height was measured which remained consistent after 144 h of storage. Similarly, enzymatic hydroxylation of PP films lead to a decrease of the WCA from 104.6° to 77.3° with no major change after exposure to air for 6 days. Using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, an increase in normalized atomic concentrations of oxygen from 1.40 to 4.98% for the CO-inhibited and enzyme treated sample, respectively, was measured confirming enzymatic hydroxylation.This study was performed within Austrian Centre of Industrial Biotechnology ACIB, the MacroFun project and COST Action 868. Peace in Guatemala and Immigrant Health in the United States
Background: The civil war between the indigenous Mayans and other Guatemalans lasted for 36 years, killed civilians, decimated villages, and resulted in many refugees. The Guatemalan Peace Agreement of 1996 aimed to alleviate the ongoing conflict. Studies of peace agreements more typically evaluate local political outcomes while neglecting global health outcomes. Objective: Our research quantified associations between pre-migration exposure to the peace agreement in Guatemala and the post-migration health status of Guatemalan immigrants in the United States. Methods: We used chi-square tests to compare the distribution of health status before and after peace. We used ordered probit regressions to estimate associations between peace in Guatemala and health in the United States, conditional on the observed distributions of age, age squared, age cubed, and linear time trends before and after peace. Findings: The study sample included 4,115 female and 5,282 male Guatemalan immigrants between the ages of 15 and 85. The mean age was 38.8 years for females (standard deviation, 14.2) and 35.4 years for males (standard deviation, 12.6). Chi-square tests found statistically significant differences in the distribution of health status before and after the peace agreement, for females (P < .001) and males (P < .001). In unadjusted results, the peace agreement was associated with a 7.3 percentage point increase in excellent post-migration health for females (95% confidence interval, 4.9 to 9.8) and a 6.0 percentage point increase for males (95% confidence interval, 3.8 to 8.2). In adjusted results, we found that the peace agreement was associated with a 6.1 percentage point increase in excellent post-migration health for females (95% confidence interval, 0.8 to 11.4) and a 5.5-percentage point increase for males (95% confidence interval, 1.0 to 10.0). Conclusions: The peace agreement in Guatemala was associated with statistically significant improvements in the health status of Guatemalan immigrants to the United States
The USNO-B Catalog
USNO-B is an all-sky catalog that presents positions, proper motions,
magnitudes in various optical passbands, and star/galaxy estimators for
1,042,618,261 objects derived from 3,643,201,733 separate observations. The
data were obtained from scans of 7,435 Schmidt plates taken for the various sky
surveys during the last 50 years. USNO-B1.0 is believed to provide all-sky
coverage, completeness down to V = 21, 0.2 arcsecond astrometric accuracy at
J2000, 0.3 magnitude photometric accuracy in up to five colors, and 85%
accuracy for distinguishing stars from non-stellar objects. A brief discussion
of various issues is given here, but the actual data are available from

Protein disulphide isomerase-assisted functionalization of keratin-based matrices
In living systems, protein disulphide isomerase
(PDI, EC 5.3.4.1) regulates the formation of new disulphide bonds in proteins (oxidase activity) and catalyzes the rearrangement of non-native disulphide bonds (isomerase
activity), leading proteins towards their native configuration.
In this study, PDI was used to attach cysteine-containing compounds (CCCs) onto hair, to enhance compound migration within hair fibre and to trigger protein release. A fluorescent (5(6)-TAMRA)-labelled keratin peptide was
incorporated into hair by using PDI. Similarly, PDI promoted the grafting of a cysteine-functionalized dye onto wool, as suggested by matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight results. These reactions were thought to involve oxidation of disulphide bonds between CCCs and
wool or hair cysteine residues, catalyzed by the oxidized PDI active site. On the other hand, PDI was demonstrated to enhance the migration of a disulphide bondfunctionalized
dye within the keratin matrix and trigger
the release of RNase A from wool fibres’ surface. These observations may indicate that an isomerisation reaction occurred, catalyzed by the reduced PDI active site, to
achieve the thiol-disulphide exchange, i.e. the rearrangement of disulphide bonds between CCCs and keratin.

Electronic training devices: discussion on the pros and cons of their use in dogs as a basis for the position statement of the European Society of Veterinary Clinical Ethology (ESVCE)
In recent years, the affirmation of a greater ethical sense and research generating a better knowledge of the mechanisms of animal learning, evidence of the existence of an animal mind), and studies on the dog-human attachment bond have led to changes in the dog-human relationship. These changes have caused a notable improvement in dog training techniques. Increased emphasis on dog welfare, overall, led to questioning of many training techniques and tools that used aversive means. Recent research on the use of aversive training devices has been performed and, on this basis it has been possible to create guidelines to inform the public about utility and the possible detriments related to the use of these devices as a tool in dog training. The European Society of Clinical Animal Ethology (ESVCE) has released a public position statement based on the current scientific information available on e-collars, punitive training techniques and canine welfare. This paper elaborates and discusses the arguments “pro and contra the use of e-collars and aversive training methods” leading to the statement in more detail. As a conclusion, ESVCE strongly opposes the use of e-collars in dog training, and urges all European countries to take an interest in and position on this welfare matter
Measurement of χ c1 and χ c2 production with s√ = 7 TeV pp collisions at ATLAS
The prompt and non-prompt production cross-sections for the χ c1 and χ c2 charmonium states are measured in pp collisions at s√ = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC using 4.5 fb−1 of integrated luminosity. The χ c states are reconstructed through the radiative decay χ c → J/ψγ (with J/ψ → μ + μ −) where photons are reconstructed from γ → e + e − conversions. The production rate of the χ c2 state relative to the χ c1 state is measured for prompt and non-prompt χ c as a function of J/ψ transverse momentum. The prompt χ c cross-sections are combined with existing measurements of prompt J/ψ production to derive the fraction of prompt J/ψ produced in feed-down from χ c decays. The fractions of χ c1 and χ c2 produced in b-hadron decays are also measured
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections for Higgs boson production in the diphoton decay channel at s√=8 TeV with ATLAS
Measurements of fiducial and differential cross sections are presented for Higgs boson production in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of s√=8 TeV. The analysis is performed in the H → γγ decay channel using 20.3 fb−1 of data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The signal is extracted using a fit to the diphoton invariant mass spectrum assuming that the width of the resonance is much smaller than the experimental resolution. The signal yields are corrected for the effects of detector inefficiency and resolution. The pp → H → γγ fiducial cross section is measured to be 43.2 ±9.4(stat.) − 2.9 + 3.2 (syst.) ±1.2(lumi)fb for a Higgs boson of mass 125.4GeV decaying to two isolated photons that have transverse momentum greater than 35% and 25% of the diphoton invariant mass and each with absolute pseudorapidity less than 2.37. Four additional fiducial cross sections and two cross-section limits are presented in phase space regions that test the theoretical modelling of different Higgs boson production mechanisms, or are sensitive to physics beyond the Standard Model. Differential cross sections are also presented, as a function of variables related to the diphoton kinematics and the jet activity produced in the Higgs boson events. The observed spectra are statistically limited but broadly in line with the theoretical expectations
Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charm quark in pp collisions at √s = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The production of a W boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 4.6 fb−1 of pp collision data at s√ = 7 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. In events in which a W boson decays to an electron or muon, the charm quark is tagged either by its semileptonic decay to a muon or by the presence of a charmed meson. The integrated and differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the W-boson decay are measured. Results are compared to the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD calculations obtained from various parton distribution function parameterisations. The ratio of the strange-to-down sea-quark distributions is determined to be 0.96+0.26−0.30 at Q 2 = 1.9 GeV2, which supports the hypothesis of an SU(3)-symmetric composition of the light-quark sea. Additionally, the cross-section ratio σ(W + +c¯¯)/σ(W − + c) is compared to the predictions obtained using parton distribution function parameterisations with different assumptions about the s−s¯¯¯ quark asymmetry
