The use of tax havens in exemption regimes

    Get PDF
This paper analyzes the tax haven investment behavior of multinational firms from a country that exempts foreign income from taxation. High foreign tax rates generally encourage firms to invest in tax havens, though significant costs of reallocating taxable income dampen these incentives. The behavior of German manufacturing firms from 2002-2008 is consistent with this prediction: at the mean, one percentage point higher foreign tax rates are associated with three percentage point greater likelihoods of owning tax haven affiliates. This contrasts with earlier evidence for U.S. firms subject to home country taxation, which are more likely to invest in tax havens if they face lower foreign tax rates. Foreign tax rates appear to be unrelated to tax haven investments of German firms in service industries, possibly reflecting the difficulty they face in reallocating taxable income

Famous and Lesser Known Members of the University of Michigan Medical School Who Have Made a Difference: A Historical View

    Get PDF
The University of Michigan Medical School (UMMS) opened its doors in 1850. Since that time it has become renowned for numerous alumni who have made an impact in the world. Although some are well known, others have played a role that most people are unaware of. Here we will highlight the diverse individuals and their achievements. The contents of this poster were searched for and recovered from: the Bentley Historical Library, the archives of the University of Michigan; the University of Michigan Medical School’s Center for the History of Medicine whose primary objective is to foster a broader understanding and deeper appreciation of the pioneering role of the University of Michigan, its alumni, and Michigan as a state in advancing knowledge of disease and promoting human health.Through our research, we have been able to highlight several well-known and lesser-known University of Michigan alumni who have had an impact on various areas of life, both medical and political. In addition, some of them have conquered barriers of ethnicity and gender. In this poster we have brought to light a number of the notable alumni of the University of Michigan Medical School.http://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/116874/1/MLA 2016 Famous UM Graduates.pdfDescription of MLA 2016 Famous UM Graduates.pdf : Poster presented at the 2016 MLA, CHLA/ABSC, ICLC Joint Conference, May 13-18, Toronto, Canad

    Get PDF
Life cycles and biographic constructions are always embedded in relations of social difference and power, which are indeed established in long-term processes, yet have to be articulated situatively over and over again. Given that fact a research perspective, which is able to observe situative as well as biographical aspects of a phenomenon, proves to be gainful regarding research that is concerned with theories of social inequality. With an ethno-biographical approach, practical implementations with their context referentiality as well as the biographic layering of experiences, which are framing these, can be taken into account. The combination of the two perspectives can be methodologically conducted on the basis of implicit knowledge to be reconstructed in both of them. These factors are discussed based on an exemplary study dealing with the specific context of a bilingual school class at the so called "language border" in Switzerland. The study looks at how speakers assign, process, and articulate situatively both, a sense of belonging and of difference, in their multilingual language practices, but also in their talking about multilingualism. Thereby, multilingualism is conceived as social practice, on whose behalf identities and a sense of belonging as well as differences and instances of exclusion are brought about and dealt with

    Multinational Firms and Tax Havens

    Get PDF
Multinational firms with operations in high-tax countries can benefit the most from reallocating taxable income to tax havens, though this is sufficiently difficult and costly that only 20.4% of German multinational firms have any tax haven affiliates. Among German manufacturing firms, a 1 percentage point higher foreign tax rate is associated with a 2.3% greater likelihood of owning a tax haven affiliate. This is consistent with tax avoidance incentives and contrasts with earlier evidence for U.S. firms. The relationship is less strong for firms in service industries, possibly reflecting the difficulty of reallocating taxable service income
