Use and abuse of the quasi-steady-state approximation

The transient kinetic behaviour of an open single enzyme, single substrate reaction is examined. The reaction follows the Van Slyke–Cullen mechanism, a spacial case of the Michaelis–Menten reaction. The analysis is performed both with and without applying the quasi-steady-state approximation. The analysis of the full system shows conditions for biochemical pathway coupling, which yield sustained oscillatory behaviour in the enzyme reaction. The reduced model does not demonstrate this behaviour. The results have important implications in the analysis of open biochemical reactions and the modelling of metabolic systems

Using African American Perspectives to Promote a More Inclusive Understanding of Human Communication Theory

This article addresses the use of African American Perspectives as a means of promoting a more inclusive understanding of human communication theory. It describes contributions by African American scholars as they relate to providing a framework for inclusion of other under-represented cultures in U.S. society (i.e. Asian American, Latin American, etc.). This objective is becoming more and more relevant because of the increased percentage of U.S. citizens who are of non-European origin. Common sense supports the position that an inclusive curriculum, representative of the many cultural groups that compose the U.S., will appeal to the diverse audience educated in the U.S. today and tomorrow

[Review of] K. S. Tom. Echoes from Old China: Life, Legends, and Lore of the Middle Kingdom

K. S. Tom provides insightful glimpses into a variety of aspects of Chinese culture. In the preface, the author states this book provides a general introduction to Chinese customs, traditions and culture. It is by no means an exhaustive or definitive account of the topics that have been selected for discussion. This reviewer was initially distracted because of the wide range of topics covered and the lack of conclusiveness and interrelatedness among these topics. However, acknowledgement by the author that this book is an introduction to a variety of aspects of Chinese culture, rather than a conclusive analysis, encouraged this reader to review the book in light of the author\u27s objective

[Review of] Tu Wei-ming,ed. The Living Tree: The Changing Meaning of Being Chinese Today

This book evolved from the spring, 1991 special issue of “Daedalus, the Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Tu Wei-ming presents a collection of perspectives of the Chinese identity. These essays stand alone well, some are more relevant and better written than others (as will be addressed in this review), but they collectively fail to provide a coherent unified interpretation. The chapter topics are somewhat related but the continuity among them is weak (which should not be interpreted as a shortcoming of the individual chapter authors)
