    Comparisons of commercial frozen yogurt with ksu formulation

    Ten samples of vanilla frozen yogurt were purchased in Kansas and compared to a highprotein, KSU formulation. The KSU formulation had similar solids, fat, and sugar contents as the commercial samples. All commercial samples had lower protein (almost less than half) content and more lactose, and almost all samples had fewer lactic acid bacteria than the KSU formulation. All but one commercial sample had lower b-galactosidase activity than the KSU formulation. This may reflect the differing lactic acid bacterial populations in the frozen yogurts

    Hosts of Type II Quasars: an HST Study

    Type II quasars are luminous Active Galactic Nuclei whose centers are obscured by large amounts of gas and dust. In this contribution we present 3-band HST images of nine type II quasars with redshifts 0.25<z<0.4 selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey based on their emission line properties. The intrinsic luminosities of these quasars are thought to be in the range -24>M_B>-26, but optical obscuration implies that host galaxies can be studied unencumbered by bright nuclei. Each object has been imaged in three filters (`red', `green' and `blue') placed between the strong emission lines. The spectacular, high quality images reveal a wealth of details about the structure of the host galaxies and their environments. Most galaxies in the sample are ellipticals, but strong deviations from de Vaucouleurs profiles are found, especially in the blue band. We argue that most of these deviations are due to the light from the nucleus scattered off interstellar material in the host galaxy. This scattered component can make a significant contribution to the broad-band flux and complicates the analysis of the colors of the stellar populations in the host galaxy.     Characterization of clean and fouled ultrafiltration membranes

    Much research into the fundamentals of membrane formation and separation has been performed in order to improve the efficiency of the manufacture of ultrafiltration membranes. Determination of the membrane characteristics is a key problem in these investigations. In this paper, we report on a study of membrane morphology by fractional rejection measurements, using low molecular weight saccharides as the test solute, and by electron microscopy. Using a simple model for solute/solvent transport through cylindrical pores, a “characteristic pore size” was derived from saccharide rejection data. This pore size of a hypothetical isoporous membrane, interpreting the measured separation characteristics, provides a promising means of describing differences between membranes with respect to pore size and pore size changes caused by solute adsorption. From high resolution electron micrographs, information was obtained on the skin layer morphologies and, for some membranes the sizes of the larger pores could be estimated

    V-a Tests Through Leptons from Polarised Top Quarks

    Angular-energy distributions are studied for charged leptons and neutrinos from the decays of polarised top quarks. A small admixture of V+A interactions is incorporated. The polarisation dependent part of the neutrino distribution which can be measured experimentally through the missing momentum is particularly sensitive towards deviations from the V-A structure. This result remains unaffected by QCD corrections which, however, cannot be neglected in a quantitative analysis.Comment: 10 pages, LaTex (uses epsf.sty, 2 figures appended as uuencoded ps files).     Shot noise in resonant tunneling through a zero-dimensional state with a complex energy spectrum

    We investigate the noise properties of a GaAs/AlGaAs resonant tunneling structure at bias voltages where the current characteristic is determined by single electron tunneling. We discuss the suppression of the shot noise in the framework of a coupled two-state system. For large bias voltages we observed super-Poissonian shot noise up to values of the Fano factor α10\alpha \approx 10.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for Phys. Rev.

    Oscillatory wave fronts in chains of coupled nonlinear oscillators

    Wave front pinning and propagation in damped chains of coupled oscillators are studied. There are two important thresholds for an applied constant stress FF: for F<Fcd|F|<F_{cd} (dynamic Peierls stress), wave fronts fail to propagate, for Fcd<F<FcsF_{cd} < |F| < F_{cs} stable static and moving wave fronts coexist, and for F>Fcs|F| > F_{cs} (static Peierls stress) there are only stable moving wave fronts. For piecewise linear models, extending an exact method of Atkinson and Cabrera's to chains with damped dynamics corroborates this description. For smooth nonlinearities, an approximate analytical description is found by means of the active point theory. Generically for small or zero damping, stable wave front profiles are non-monotone and become wavy (oscillatory) in one of their tails.Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, 2 column revtex.
