Penetration Depth Measurements in MgB_2: Evidence for Unconventional Superconductivity
We have measured the magnetic penetration depth of the recently discovered
binary superconductor MgB_2 using muon spin rotation and low field
-susceptibility. From the damping of the muon precession signal we find the
penetration depth at zero temperature is about 85nm. The low temperature
penetration depth shows a quadratic temperature dependence, indicating the
presence of nodes in the superconducting energy gap.Comment: 4 pages 3 figure
Two-particle interference of electron pairs on a molecular level
We investigate the photo-doubleionization of molecules with 400 eV
photons. We find that the emitted electrons do not show any sign of two-center
interference fringes in their angular emission distributions if considered
separately. In contrast, the quasi-particle consisting of both electrons (i.e.
the "dielectron") does. The work highlights the fact that non-local effects are
embedded everywhere in nature where many-particle processes are involved
GATA3-driven Th2 responses inhibit TGF-beta1-induced FOXP3 expression and the formation of regulatory T cells.
Transcription factors act in concert to induce lineage commitment towards Th1, Th2, or T regulatory (Treg) cells, and their counter-regulatory mechanisms were shown to be critical for polarization between Th1 and Th2 phenotypes. FOXP3 is an essential transcription factor for natural, thymus-derived (nTreg) and inducible Treg (iTreg) commitment; however, the mechanisms regulating its expression are as yet unknown. We describe a mechanism controlling iTreg polarization, which is overruled by the Th2 differentiation pathway. We demonstrated that interleukin 4 (IL-4) present at the time of T cell priming inhibits FOXP3. This inhibitory mechanism was also confirmed in Th2 cells and in T cells of transgenic mice overexpressing GATA-3 in T cells, which are shown to be deficient in transforming growth factor (TGF)-beta-mediated FOXP3 induction. This inhibition is mediated by direct binding of GATA3 to the FOXP3 promoter, which represses its transactivation process. Therefore, this study provides a new understanding of tolerance development, controlled by a type 2 immune response. IL-4 treatment in mice reduces iTreg cell frequency, highlighting that therapeutic approaches that target IL-4 or GATA3 might provide new preventive strategies facilitating tolerance induction particularly in Th2-mediated diseases, such as allergy
The genetic contribution of the NO system at the glutamatergic post-synapse to schizophrenia : further evidence and meta-analysis
NO is a pleiotropic signaling molecule and has an important role in cognition and emotion. In the brain, NO is produced by neuronal nitric oxide synthase (NOS-I, encoded by NOS1) coupled to the NMDA receptor via PDZ. interactions; this protein-protein interaction is disrupted upon binding of NOS1 adapter protein (encoded by NOS1AP) to NOS-I. As both NOS1 and NOS1AP were associated with schizophrenia, we here investigated these genes in greater detail by genotyping new samples and conducting a meta-analysis of our own and published data. In doing so, we confirmed association of both genes with schizophrenia and found evidence for their interaction in increasing risk towards disease. Our strongest finding was the NOS1 promoter SNP rs41279104, yielding an odds ratio of 1.29 in the meta-analysis. As findings from heterologous cell systems have suggested that the risk allele decreases gene expression, we studied the effect of the variant on NOS1 expression in human post-mortem brain samples and found that the risk allele significantly decreases expression of NOS1 in the prefrontal cortex. Bioinformatic analyses suggest that this might be due the replacement of six transcription factor binding sites by two new binding sites as a consequence of proxy SNPs. Taken together, our data argue that genetic variance in NOS1 resulting in lower prefrontal brain expression of this gene contributes to schizophrenia liability, and that NOS1 interacts with NOS1AP in doing so. The NOS1-NOS1AP PDZ interface may thus well constitute a novel target for small molecules in at least some forms of schizophrenia. PostprintPeer reviewe
Epistemic policy networks in the European Union’s CBRN risk mitigation policy
This paper offers insights into an innovative and currently flagship approach of the European Union (EU) to the mitigation of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) risks. Building on its long-time experience in the CBRN field, the EU has incorporated methods familiar to the students of international security governance: it is establishing regional networks of experts and expertise. CBRN Centers of Excellence, as they are officially called, aim to contribute to the security and safety culture in different parts of Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, and South East Europe, in the broadly construed CBRN area. These regional networks represent a modern form of security cooperation, which can be conceptualized as an epistemic policy networks approach. It offers flexibility to the participating states, which have different incentives to get involved. At the same, however, the paper identifies potential limitations and challenges of epistemic policy networks in this form
Exploring hybrid star matter at NICA and FAIR
We discuss constraints for the equation of state of hybrid star matter which
can be obtained from heavy-ion collisions at FAIR and NICA. Particular emphasis
is on the planned NICA facility at JINR Dubna which shall provide fixed-target

Terahertz response of patterned epitaxial graphene
We study the interaction between polarized terahertz (THz) radiation and
micro-structured large-area graphene in transmission geometry. In order to efficiently
couple the radiation into the two-dimensional material, a lateral periodic patterning
of a closed graphene sheet by intercalation doping into stripes is chosen. We observe
unequal transmittance of the radiation polarized parallel and perpendicular to the
stripes. The relative contrast, partly enhanced by Fabry-Perot oscillations reaches
20 %. The effect even increases up to 50 % when removing graphene stripes in analogy
to a wire grid polarizer. The polarization dependence is analyzed in a large frequency
range from < 80 GHz to 3 THz, including the plasmon-polariton resonance. The results
are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations based on the electronic energy

The chicken gene nomenclature committee report
Comparative genomics is an essential component of the post-genomic era. The chicken genome is the first avian genome to be sequenced and it will serve as a model for other avian species. Moreover, due to its unique evolutionary niche, the chicken genome can be used to understand evolution of functional elements and gene regulation in mammalian species. However comparative biology both within avian species and within amniotes is hampered due to the difficulty of recognising functional orthologs. This problem is compounded as different databases and sequence repositories proliferate and the names they assign to functional elements proliferate along with them. Currently, genes can be published under more than one name and one name sometimes refers to unrelated genes. Standardized gene nomenclature is necessary to facilitate communication between scientists and genomic resources. Moreover, it is important that this nomenclature be based on existing nomenclature efforts where possible to truly facilitate studies between different species. We report here the formation of the Chicken Gene Nomenclature Committee (CGNC), an international and centralized effort to provide standardized nomenclature for chicken genes. The CGNC works in conjunction with public resources such as NCBI and Ensembl and in consultation with existing nomenclature committees for human and mouse. The CGNC will develop standardized nomenclature in consultation with the research community and relies on the support of the research community to ensure that the nomenclature facilitates comparative and genomic studies
Projectile fragmentation of 129Xe at Elab=790 AMeV
We have measured production yields and longitudinal momentum distributions of
projectile-like fragments in the reaction 129Xe + 27Al at an energy of Elab=790
AMeV. Production cross sections higher than expected from systematics were
observed for nuclei in the neutron-deficient tails of the isotopic
distributions. A comparison with previously measured data from the
fragmentation of 136Xe ions shows that the production yields strongly depend on
the neutron excess of the projectile with respect to the line of
beta-stability. The momentum distributions exhibit a dependence on the fragment
neutron-to-proton ratio in isobaric chains, which was not expected from
systematics so far. This can be interpreted by a higher excitation of the
projectile during the formation of neutron-deficient fragments.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures, 1 tabl
