Integrating out the Dirac sea: Effective field theory approach to exactly solvable four-fermion models
We use 1+1 dimensional large N Gross-Neveu models as a laboratory to derive
microscopically effective Lagrangians for positive energy fermions only. When
applied to baryons, the Euler-Lagrange equation for these effective theories
assumes the form of a non-linear Dirac equation. Its solution reproduces the
full semi-classical results including the Dirac sea to any desired accuracy.
Dynamical effects from the Dirac sea are encoded in higher order derivative
terms and multi-fermion interactions with perturbatively calculable, finite
coefficients. Characteristic differences between models with discrete and
continuous chiral symmetry are observed and clarified.Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures; v2: typos corrected (Eqs. 4 and 44
Kinetics of non-equilibrium quasiparticle tunneling in superconducting charge qubits
We directly observe low-temperature non-equilibrium quasiparticle tunneling
in a pair of charge qubits based on the single Cooper-pair box. We measure
even- and odd-state dwell time distributions as a function of temperature, and
interpret these results using a kinetic theory. While the even-state lifetime
is exponentially distributed, the odd-state distribution is more heavily
weighted to short times, implying that odd-to-even tunnel events are not
described by a homogenous Poisson process. The mean odd-state dwell time
increases sharply at low temperature, which is consistent with quasiparticles
tunneling out of the island before reaching thermal equilibrium.Comment: Replaced Figure 1 with color version, corrected more typos. Version

Stable Fermion Bag Solitons in the Massive Gross-Neveu Model: Inverse Scattering Analysis
Formation of fermion bag solitons is an important paradigm in the theory of
hadron structure. We study this phenomenon non-perturbatively in the 1+1
dimensional Massive Gross-Neveu model, in the large limit. We find,
applying inverse scattering techniques, that the extremal static bag
configurations are reflectionless, as in the massless Gross-Neveu model. This
adds to existing results of variational calculations, which used reflectionless
bag profiles as trial configurations. Only reflectionless trial configurations
which support a single pair of charge-conjugate bound states of the associated
Dirac equation were used in those calculations, whereas the results in the
present paper hold for bag configurations which support an arbitrary number of
such pairs. We compute the masses of these multi-bound state solitons, and
prove that only bag configurations which bear a single pair of bound states are
stable. Each one of these configurations gives rise to an O(2N) antisymmetric
tensor multiplet of soliton states, as in the massless Gross-Neveu model.Comment: 10 pages, revtex, no figures; v2: typos corrected, references added;
