The crystal monochromator beamline KMC-1 at BESSY II
The KMC-1 is a soft x-ray double crystal monochromator beamline for the energy range between 2 and 12 keV. The bending magnet beamline as well as the experiment are under UHV-condition. It incorporates high indexed Si-crystals for high resolution and it is primarily used for HAXPES experiments employing the HIKE (High Kinetic Energy Photoelectron Spectroscopy) chamber
POLARIMETER: A Soft X-Ray 8-Axis UHV-Diffractometer at BESSY II
A versatile UHV-polarimeter for the EUV XUV spectral range is described which incorporates two optical elements: a phase retarder and a reflection analyzer. Both optics are azimuthally rotatable around the incident synchrotron radiation beam and the incidence angle is freely selectable. This allows for a variety of reflectometry, polarimetry and ellipsometry applications on magnetic or non-magnetic samples and multilayer optical elements
Beamline design and performance
The Energy Materials In-Situ Laboratory Berlin (EMIL) at BESSY-II is currently
under construction. Two canted undulators for soft- and hard X-rays will be
installed into the BESSY II storage ring in one straight section, complex
beamlines with more than twenty optical elements will be set up and a new
laboratory building attached to BESSY II will host three endstations and a
large UHV-transfer system connecting various HV- and UHV-deposition systems.
The undulators, UE48 and U17, provide a broad energy spectrum of 80 - 10000
eV, of which the harder radiation (>700 eV) is provided by a cryogenic in-
vacuum device. Three monochromators (two plane grating monochromators (PGM)
and one LN2-cooled double crystal monochromator (DCM)) disperse the radiation
into separate pathways of 65 m length, while downstream of the monochromators
split-mirror chambers distribute the photon beam to one (or simultaneously to
two) of five upcoming endstations. Three of these endstations are designed for
the full energy range with spatial overlap of the soft and hard foci, whereas
one endstation (PEEM) uses only the soft and another one (PINK) only the hard
branch, respectively
Dichroism of x-ray fluorescence under standing waves regime in magnetic periodic multilayers
We present the first test of the implementation of a characterization method whose aim is to study the interfaces of magnetic and periodic hetero-structures. The methodology relies on the combination of two techniques, generation of x-ray standing waves and dichroism in x-ray emission. The first one gives the depth selectivity since the maximum of the electric field can be put in specific locations of the stack, the centre of layers or their interfaces, while the second one enables being sensitive to the magnetic character of the atoms present within the stack. To concentrate on the methodology, the well-studied Mg/Co multilayer is analysed by using incident photon of monochromatic energies across the Co L2,3 absorption edge and measuring the intensity of the Co Lαβ emission. Despite large dispersive effects preventing the maxima of the electric field to reach the interfaces of the stack, it has been possible to observe the dichroic signal in the angular distribution of the Co emission intensity, i.e. in the so-called x-ray standing wave curve
Autonomic modulation and antiarrhythmic therapy in a model of long QT syndrome type 3
AIMS: Clinical observations in patients with long QT syndrome carrying sodium channel mutations (LQT3) suggest that bradycardia caused by parasympathetic stimulation may provoke torsades de pointes (TdP). beta-Adrenoceptor blockers appear less effective in LQT3 than in other forms of the disease. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied effects of autonomic modulation on arrhythmias in vivo and in vitro and quantified sympathetic innervation by autoradiography in heterozygous mice with a knock-in deletion (DeltaKPQ) in the Scn5a gene coding for the cardiac sodium channel and increased late sodium current (LQT3 mice). Cholinergic stimulation by carbachol provoked bigemini and TdP in freely roaming LQT3 mice. No arrhythmias were provoked by physical stress, mental stress, isoproterenol, or atropine. In isolated, beating hearts, carbachol did not prolong action potentials per se, but caused bradycardia and rate-dependent action potential prolongation. The muscarinic inhibitor AFDX116 prevented effects of carbachol on heart rate and arrhythmias. beta-Adrenoceptor stimulation suppressed arrhythmias, shortened rate-corrected action potential duration, increased rate, and minimized difference in late sodium current between genotypes. beta-Adrenoceptor density was reduced in LQT3 hearts. Acute beta-adrenoceptor blockade by esmolol, propranolol or chronic propranolol in vivo did not suppress arrhythmias. Chronic flecainide pre-treatment prevented arrhythmias (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: Cholinergic stimulation provokes arrhythmias in this model of LQT3 by triggering bradycardia. beta-Adrenoceptor density is reduced, and beta-adrenoceptor blockade does not prevent arrhythmias. Sodium channel blockade and beta-adrenoceptor stimulation suppress arrhythmias by shortening repolarization and minimizing difference in late sodium current.status: publishe

The At-Wavelength Metrology Facility at BESSY-II
The At-Wavelength Metrology Facility at BESSY-II is dedicated to short-term characterization of novel UV, EUV and XUV optical elements, such as diffraction gratings, mirrors, multilayers and nano-optical devices like reflection zone plates. It consists of an Optics Beamline PM-1 and a Reflectometer in a clean-room hutch as a fixed end station. The bending magnet Beamline is a Plane Grating Monochromator beamline (c-PGM) equipped with an SX700 monochromator. The beamline is specially tailored for efficient high-order suppression and stray light reduction. The versatile 11-axes UHV-Reflectometer can house life-sized optical elements, which are fully adjustable and of which the reflection properties can be measured in the full incidence angular range as well as in the full azimuthal angular range to determine polarization properties
