Endogenous Growth with Endogenous Fertility and Social Discrimination in Education
We simulate a two-sectoral, three-period OLG-model with endogenous fertility and endogenous education. Parents receive utility from quantity and quality (education) of their offspring, generating a trade-off between the former and the latter. Since education governs efficiency in production, hence wage income and growth, labour supply and education per child increase and fertility declines dur- ing the process of economic development. Therefore, the model is able to explain the recent fertility decline, in all developed countries, and to single out the determinants for long-run growth in per capita terms. The transition speed towards the steady state is governed by the growth rate of the wage rate, which in turn depends on education investments and fertility of previous generations, leading to an intergenerational persistence in these variables. Due to this effect, social discrimination in the education sector leads to high fertility and low education in the low-income percentiles, while the opposite is true for the upper ones. Hence, the average level of education declines and hinders growth.
Hot Spaghetti: Viscous Gravitational Collapse
We explore the fate of matter falling into a macroscopic Schwarzschild black
hole for the simplified case of a radially collapsing thin spherical shell for
which the back reaction of the geometry can be neglected. We treat the internal
dynamics of the infalling matter in the framework of viscous relativistic
hydrodynamics and calculate how the internal temperature of the collapsing
matter evolves as it falls toward the Schwarzschild singularity. We find that
viscous hydrodynamics fails when either, the dissipative radial pressure
exceeds the thermal pressure and the total radial pressure becomes negative, or
the time scale of variation of the tidal forces acting on the collapsing matter
becomes shorter than the characteristic hydrodynamic response time.Comment: Invited talk presented at the FIAS International Symposion on

Model-independent calculation of violation in baryon octet light-cone distribution amplitudes
In this work we present a minimal parametrization of the light-cone
distribution amplitudes of the baryon octet including higher twist
contributions. Simultaneously we obtain the quark mass dependence of the
amplitudes at leading one-loop accuracy by the use of three-flavor baryon
chiral perturbation theory (BChPT), which automatically yields
model-independent results for the leading flavor breaking effects. For
that purpose we have constructed the nonlocal light-cone three-quark operators
in terms of baryon octet and meson fields and have carried out a
next-to-leading order BChPT calculation. We were able to find a minimal set of
distribution amplitudes (DAs) that do not mix under chiral extrapolation
towards the physical point and naturally embed the baryon.
Additionally they are chosen in such a way that all DAs of a certain symmetry
class have a similar quark mass dependence (independent of the twist of the
corresponding amplitude), which allows for a compact presentation. The results
are well-suited for the extrapolation of lattice data and for model building.Comment: We have updated the text to match the version published in JHE
Transverse energy density fluctuations in the Color Glass Condensate Model
We calculate the transverse correlation of fluctuations of the deposited
energy density in nuclear collisions in the framework of the Gaussian color
glass condensate model.Comment: Corrections of some typographical and numerical error
A note on the scale evolution of the ETQS function T_F(x,x)
We reexamine the scale dependence of the ETQS (Efremov-Teryaev-Qiu-Sterman)
twist-3 matrix element which has been studied already by the four different
groups with conflicting results Ref.[1-4]. We find that we can in fact
reproduce the results of Ref.[4] with the method Ref.[4] when we treat some
subtleties with greater care, thus easing the mentioned conflict.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figur
