Variable damping and coherence in a high-density magnon gas
We report on the fast relaxation behavior of a high-density magnon gas
created by a parametric amplification process. The magnon gas is probed using
the technique of spin-wave packet recovery by parallel parametric pumping.
Experimental results show a damping behavior which is in disagreement with both
the standard model of exponential decay and with earlier observations of
non-linear damping. In particular, the inherent magnon damping is found to
depend upon the presence of the parametric pumping field. A phenomenological
model which accounts for the dephasing of the earlier injected magnons is in
good agreement with the experimental data
Photoinduced melting of superconductivity in the high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4 probed by time-resolved optical and THz techniques
Dynamics of depletion and recovery of superconducting state in La2-xSrxCuO_4
thin films is investigated utilizing optical pump-probe and optical pump - THz
probe techniques as a function of temperature and excitation fluence. The
absorbed energy density required to suppress superconductivity is found to be
about 8 times higher than the thermodynamically determined condensation energy
density and nearly temperature independent between 4 and 25 K. These findings
indicate that during the time when superconducting state suppression takes
place (~0.7 ps), a large part (nearly 90%) of the energy is transferred to the
phonons with energy lower than twice the maximum value of of the SC gap and
only 10% is spent on Cooper pair breaking.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Mass Terms in Effective Theories of High Density Quark Matter
We study the structure of mass terms in the effective theory for
quasi-particles in QCD at high baryon density. To next-to-leading order in the
expansion we find two types of mass terms, chirality conserving
two-fermion operators and chirality violating four-fermion operators. In the
effective chiral theory for Goldstone modes in the color-flavor-locked (CFL)
phase the former terms correspond to effective chemical potentials, while the
latter lead to Lorentz invariant mass terms. We compute the masses of Goldstone
bosons in the CFL phase, confirming earlier results by Son and Stephanov as
well as Bedaque and Sch\"afer. We show that to leading order in the coupling
constant there is no anti-particle gap contribution to the mass of
Goldstone modes, and that our results are independent of the choice of gauge.Comment: 22 pages, 4 figure
Glueballs and Instantons
We study correlation functions and Bethe Salpeter amplitudes for the scalar,
the pseudoscalar and the tensor glueballs using an instanton-based model of the
QCD vacuum. We consider both the pure gauge case and the situation for real QCD
with two light quark flavors. We show that instantons lead to a strong
modification of the correlation functions as compared to their perturbative
behavior. In particular, we find a strong attractive force in the
channel and repulsion in the channel. Due to the
strong classical field of the instantons, these effects are much larger than
the spin splittings observed in mesons made of quarks. The resulting masses,
coupling constants and wave functions appear to be in agreement with lattice
gauge simulations.Comment: revised version published in Phys. Rev. Let
Exclusive annihilation p pbar -> gamma gamma in a generalized parton picture
Exclusive proton-antiproton annihilation into two photons at large s (~10
GeV^2) and |t|,|u| ~ s can be described by a generalized parton picture
analogous to the 'soft mechanism' in wide-angle real Compton scattering. The
two photons are emitted in the annihilation of a single fast quark and
antiquark. The matrix element describing the transition of the p-pbar system to
a q-qbar pair can be related to the timelike proton elastic form factors as
well as to the quark/antiquark distributions measured in inclusive
deep-inelastic scattering. The reaction could be studied with the proposed
1.5-15 GeV high-luminosity antiproton storage ring (HESR) at GSI.Comment: 4 pages, revtex4, 3 eps figure
Superdense Matter
We review recent work on the phase structure of QCD at very high baryon
density. We introduce the phenomenon of color superconductivity and discuss the
use of weak coupling methods. We study the phase structure as a function of the
number of flavors and their masses. We also introduce effective theories that
describe low energy excitations at high baryon density. Finally, we study the
possibility of kaon condensation at very large baryon density.Comment: 13 pages, talk at ICPAQGP, Jaipur, India, Nov. 26-30, 2001; to appear
