The  purpose  of  this  report  is  to  examine  and  describe  how  an  elite  sports organization uses  implementation  of  values  to  strengthen  the  organizational culture and the strategy.   The author has made a case study of Luleå Hockey, consisting  of   eight  interviews  and   necessary  observations.  The  report  is interview based but books, scientific articles and reports have also been taken into consideration.  Research emphasizes that the ongoing commercializing-‐  and professionalizing processes in non-‐profit  organizations has led to a greater influence of business thinking,  which can  be  noted in  the  case Luleå Hockey who knowingly uses strategy. The theoretical framework of the report, however, proves that strategy needs  the  support  of  a  strong  organizational  culture  in  order  to  be  used effectively. To develop an organizational culture that correlate with strategy, the understanding of how to implement values is important. Luleå   Hockey   uses   strategy   and   realizes   how   shared   values   influence organizational culture, however the procedure where Luleå Hockey implements the   values   into   the   organization   can   still   be   improved.   In   elite   sports organizations a conflict of interests arises when the non-‐profit fundament of the organization  is  put  in  contrast  to  the  profit-‐generating  goals,  shared  values  can therefor be the glue that holds these organizations together.

Wittgenstein and the Possibility of Religious Belief

    Get PDF
Contemporary philosophers of religion delimiting their field\ud often distinguish between belief in and belief that, and then\ud focus on the latter as more pertinent to a philosophical\ud investigation of religious belief. The believer's relationship\ud to a proposition, and the relationship between that proposition\ud and reality is of primary concern. The epistemology\ud of religious belief has thus tended to be approached as a\ud species of justification theory; its task is to provide a satisfactory\ud account of our acceptance or rejection of various\ud religiously relevant propositions. It is against this background\ud that some of the more well-known discussions of\ud Wittgenstein's philosophy of religion have taken place.\ud Hence one much belabored question has been whether\ud standards for the justification of religious belief can only be\ud determined within the context of the language-game\ud played by the community of religious believers; another\ud has been whether religious beliefs are even the kind of\ud thing open to justification, for it may be that the language\ud in which they are framed is expressive rather than propositional

[Review of] Richard F. Fleck. Henry Thoreau and John Muir Among the Indians

The idea behind this book, a comparative study of Henry David Thoreau\u27s and John Muir\u27s attitudes toward American Indians, is excellent. Muir, born in 1838, was twenty one years younger than Thoreau. He first read Walden and A Week at the University of Wisconsin in 1862, the year of Thoreau\u27s death. His early writings, although not published until much later, contained generally pro-Indian sentiments similar to Thoreau\u27s , while he also had a Thoreau-like squeamishness about Indians being dirty, lazy, superstitious, and demoralized by contact with whites. Perhaps if I knew them better, I should like them better, he wrote in My First Summer in the Sierra. The worst thing about them is their uncleanliness

Confirming the LHC Higgs Discovery with WW

We investigate the prospects of observing a neutral Higgs boson decaying into a pair of WW bosons (one real and the other virtual), followed by the WW decays into qqνqq' \ell\nu or jjνjj\ell\nu at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Assuming that the missing transverse energy comes solely from the neutrino in WW decay, we can reconstruct the WW masses and then the Higgs mass. At the LHC with a center of mass energy (s\sqrt{s}) of 8 TeV and an integrated luminosity (LL) of 25 fb1^{-1}, we can potentially establish a 6σ6\sigma signal. A 5σ5\sigma discovery of HWWjjνH \to WW^* \to jj\ell\nu for s=14\sqrt{s} = 14 TeV can be achieved with L=L = 6 fb1^{-1}. The discovery of HWWH \to WW implies that the recently discovered new boson is a CP-even scalar if its spin is zero. In addition, this channel will provide a good opportunity to study the HWWHWW coupling

Labor Market Conditions, Political Events and Palestinian Suicide Bombings

Objectives. This paper analyzes the relationship between Palestinian suicide bombings and economic and political conditions from 1993 to 2001. Labor market conditions could affect the number of terror attacks because when the economy worsens, the opportunity cost of engaging in suicide terrorism decreases. An alternative explanation is that suicide bombings are responses to changes in the political environment. Methods. Count data regression models are employed to explore the relative importance of economic and political factors in determining the frequency of suicide bombings. Results. Economic conditions explain some of the occurrence of suicide bombings from 1993 to 2001, and some political events are also strongly correlated with bombings. Conclusions. The results imply that the roots of suicide bombing may lie in the unfulilled economic promises of the Oslo peace process, but specific acts by Israelis are a proximite cause of the attacks.West Bank, Gaza, terrorism, unemployment, Palestinian
