Facial resemblance between women's partners and brothers
Research on optimal outbreeding describes the greater reproductive success experienced on average by couples who are neither too closely related, nor too genetically dissimilar. How is optimal outbreeding achieved? Faces that subtly resemble family members could present useful cues to a potential reproductive partner with an optimal level of genetic dissimilarity. Here, we present the first empirical data that heterosexual women select partners who resemble their brothers. Raters ranked the facial similarity between a woman's male partner, and that woman's brother compared to foils. In a multilevel ordinal logistic regression that modeled variability in both the stimuli and the raters, there was clear evidence for perceptual similarity in facial photographs of a woman's partner and her brother. That is, although siblings themselves are sexually aversive, sibling resemblance is not. The affective responses of disgust and attraction may be calibrated to distinguish close kin from individuals with some genetic dissimilarity during partner choice
The Dynamics of Radiative Shock Waves: Linear and Nonlinear Evolution
The stability properties of one-dimensional radiative shocks with a power-law
cooling function of the form are the main
subject of this work. The linear analysis originally presented by Chevalier &
Imamura, is thoroughfully reviewed for several values of the cooling index
and higher overtone modes. Consistently with previous results, it is
shown that the spectrum of the linear operator consists in a series of modes
with increasing oscillation frequency. For each mode a critical value of the
cooling index, , can be defined so that modes with are unstable, while modes with
are stable. The perturbative analysis is complemented by several numerical
simulations to follow the time-dependent evolution of the system for different
values of . Particular attention is given to the comparison between
numerical and analytical results (during the early phases of the evolution) and
to the role played by different boundary conditions. It is shown that an
appropriate treatment of the lower boundary yields results that closely follow
the predicted linear behavior. During the nonlinear regime, the shock
oscillations saturate at a finite amplitude and tend to a quasi-periodic cycle.
The modes of oscillations during this phase do not necessarily coincide with
those predicted by linear theory, but may be accounted for by mode-mode

Discovery of a large and bright bow shock nebula associated with low mass X-ray binary SAX J1712.6-3739
In a multiwavelength program dedicated to identifying optical counterparts of
faint persistent X-ray sources in the Galactic Bulge, we find an accurate X-ray
position of SAX J1712.6-3739 through Chandra observations, and discover its
faint optical counterpart using our data from EFOSC2 on the ESO 3.6m telescope.
We find this source to be a highly extincted neutron star LMXB with blue
optical colours. We serendipitously discover a relatively bright and large bow
shock shaped nebula in our deep narrowband H alpha imaging, most likely
associated with the X-ray binary. A nebula like this has never been observed
before in association with a LMXB, and as such provides a unique laboratory to
study the energetics of accretion and jets. We put forward different models to
explain the possible ways the LMXB may form this nebulosity, and outline how

Superdiffusion in a Model for Diffusion in a Molecularly Crowded Environment
We present a model for diffusion in a molecularly crowded environment. The
model consists of random barriers in percolation network. Random walks in the
presence of slowly moving barriers show normal diffusion for long times, but
anomalous diffusion at intermediate times. The effective exponents for square
distance versus time usually are below one at these intermediate times, but can
be also larger than one for high barrier concentrations. Thus we observe sub-
as well as super-diffusion in a crowded environment.Comment: 8 pages including 4 figure
Swift follow-up of unidentified X-ray sources in the XMM-Newton Slew Survey
We present deep Swift follow-up observations of a sample of 94 unidentified
X-ray sources from the XMM-Newton Slew Survey. The X-ray Telescope on-board
Swift detected 29% of the sample sources; the flux limits for undetected
sources suggests the bulk of the Slew Survey sources are drawn from one or more
transient populations. We report revised X-ray positions for the XRT-detected
sources, with typical uncertainties of 2.9", reducing the number of catalogued
optical matches to just a single source in most cases. We characterise the
sources detected by Swift through their X-ray spectra and variability and via
UVOT photometry and catalogued nIR, optical and radio observations. Six sources
can be associated with known objects and 8 may be associated with unidentified
ROSAT sources within the 3-sigma error radii of our revised X-ray positions. We
find 10 of the 30 XRT-detected sources are clearly stellar in nature, including
one periodic variable star and 2 high proper motion stars. For 11 sources we
propose an AGN classification, among which 4 are detected with BAT and 3 have
redshifts spanning z = 0.2 - 0.9 obtained from the literature or from optical
spectroscopy presented here. The 67 Slew Survey sources we do not detect with
Swift are studied via their characteristics in the Slew Survey and by
comparison with the XRT and BAT detected population. We suggest that these are
mostly if not all extragalactic, though unlikely to be highly absorbed sources
in the X-rays such as Compton thick AGN. A large number of these are highly
variable soft X-ray sources. A small fraction of mainly hard-band detections
may be spurious. This follow-up programme brings us a step further to
completing the identifications of a substantial sample of XMM-Newton Slew
Survey sources, important for understanding the nature of the transient sky and

Simulational study of anomalous tracer diffusion in hydrogels
In this article, we analyze different factors that affect the diffusion
behavior of small tracer particles (as they are used e.g.in fluorescence
correlation spectroscopy (FCS)) in the polymer network of a hydrogel and
perform simulations of various simplified models. We observe, that under
certain circumstances the attraction of a tracer particle to the polymer
network strands might cause subdiffusive behavior on intermediate time scales.
In theory, this behavior could be employed to examine the network structure and
swelling behavior of weakly crosslinked hydrogels with the help of FCS.Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure
The Nature of the Emission Components in the Quasar/NLS1 PG1211+143
We present the study of the emission properties of the quasar PG1211+143,
which belongs to the class of Narrow Line Seyfert 1 galaxies. On the basis of
observational data analyzed by us and collected from the literature, we study
the temporal and spectral variability of the source in the optical/UV/X-ray
bands and we propose a model that explains the spectrum emitted in this broad
energy range. In this model, the intrinsic emission originating in the warm
skin of the accretion disk is responsible for the spectral component that is
dominant in the softest X-ray range. The shape of reflected spectrum as well as
Fe K line detected in hard X-rays require the reflecting medium to be mildly
ionized (xi~500). We identify this reflector with the warm skin of the disk and
we show that the heating of the skin is consistent with the classical alpha
P_{tot} prescription, while alpha P_{gas} option is at least two orders of
magnitude too low to provide the required heating. We find that the mass of the
central black hole is relatively small (M_BH~10^7- 10^8 Msun, which is
consistent with the Broad Line Region mapping results and characteristic for

The Comparative Economics of ICT, Environmental Degradation and Inclusive Human Development in Sub-Saharan Africa
This study examines how information and communication technology (ICT) could be employed to dampen the potentially damaging effects of environmental degradation in order to promote inclusive human development in a panel of 44 Sub-Saharan African countries. ICT is captured with internet and mobile phone penetration rates whereas environmental degradation is measured in terms of CO2 emissions per capita and CO2 intensity. The empirical evidence is based on Fixed Effects and Tobit regressions using data from 2000-2012. In order to increase the policy relevance of this study, the dataset is decomposed into fundamental characteristics of inclusive development and environmental degradation based on income levels (Low income versus (vs.) Middle income); legal origins (English Common law vs. French Civil law); religious domination (Christianity vs. Islam); openness to sea (Landlocked vs. Coastal); resource-wealth (Oil-rich vs. Oil-poor) and political stability (Stable vs. Unstable).Baseline findings broadly show that improvement in both of measures of ICT would significantly diminish the possibly harmful effect of CO2 emissions on inclusive human development. When the analysis is extended with the abovementioned fundamental characteristics, we observe that the moderating influence of both our ICT variables on CO2 emissions is higher in the group of English Common law, Middle income and Oil-wealthy countries than in the French Civil law, Low income countries and Oil-poor countries respectively. Theoretical and practical policy implications are discussed
The Soft X-Ray Properties of a Complete Sample of Optically Selected Quasars II. Final Results
We present the final results of a ROSAT PSPC program to study the soft X-ray
emission properties of a complete sample of low quasars. The main results
are: 1. There is no evidence for significant soft excess emission or excess
foreground absorption by cold gas in 22 of the 23 quasars. 2. The mean 0.2-2
keV continuum of quasars agrees remarkably well with an extrapolation of the
mean 1050-350A continuum recently determined by Zheng et al. (1996), indicating
that there is no steep soft component below 0.2 keV. 3. The occurrence of warm
absorbers in quasars is rather rare, in sharp contrast to lower luminosity AGN.
4. The strongest correlation found is between the spectral slope, alpha_x, and
the Hb FWHM. This remarkably strong correlation may result from a dependence of
alpha_x on L/L_Edd, as seen in Galactic black hole candidates. 5. There appears
to exist a distinct class of ``X-ray weak'' quasars. These may be quasars where
the direct X-ray source is obscured, and only scattered X-rays are observed. 6.
Thin accretion disk models cannot reproduce the observed optical to soft X-ray
spectral shape. An as yet unknown physical mechanism maintains a strong
correlation between the optical and soft X-ray emission. 7. The well known
difference in alpha_x between radio-loud and radio-quiet quasars may be due
only to their different Hb FWHM. 8. The agreement of the 21 cm and X-ray
columns implies that He in the diffuse H II component of the Galactic ISM is
