Finite-Size Scaling of the Domain Wall Entropy Distributions for the 2D Ising Spin Glass
The statistics of domain walls for ground states of the 2D Ising spin glass
with +1 and -1 bonds are studied for square lattices with , and = 0.5, where is the fraction of negative bonds, using periodic
and/or antiperiodic boundary conditions. When is even, almost all domain
walls have energy = 0 or 4. When is odd, most domain walls have
= 2. The probability distribution of the entropy, , is found
to depend strongly on . When , the probability distribution
of is approximately exponential. The variance of this distribution
is proportional to , in agreement with the results of Saul and Kardar. For
the distribution of is not symmetric about zero. In
these cases the variance still appears to be linear in , but the average of
grows faster than . This suggests a one-parameter scaling
form for the -dependence of the distributions of for .Comment: 13 page
Spinning down newborn neutron stars: nonlinear development of the r-mode instability
We model the nonlinear saturation of the r-mode instability via three-mode
couplings and the effects of the instability on the spin evolution of young
neutron stars. We include one mode triplet consisting of the r-mode and two
near resonant inertial modes that couple to it. We find that the spectrum of
evolutions is more diverse than previously thought. The evolution of the star
is dynamic and initially dominated by fast neutrino cooling. Nonlinear effects
become important when the r-mode amplitude grows above its first parametric
instability threshold. The balance between neutrino cooling and viscous heating
plays an important role in the evolution. Depending on the initial r-mode
amplitude, and on the strength of the viscosity and of the cooling this balance
can occur at different temperatures. If thermal equilibrium occurs on the
r-mode stability curve, where gravitational driving equals viscous damping, the
evolution may be adequately described by a one-mode model. Otherwise, nonlinear
effects are important and lead to various more complicated scenarios. Once
thermal balance occurs, the star spins-down oscillating between thermal
equilibrium states until the instability is no longer active. For lower
viscosity we observe runaway behavior in which the r-mode amplitude passes
several parametric instability thresholds. In this case more modes need to be
included to model the evolution accurately. In the most optimistic case, we
find that gravitational radiation from the r-mode instability in a very young,
fast spinning neutron star within about 1 Mpc of Earth may be detectable by
advanced LIGO for years, and perhaps decades, after formation. Details
regarding the amplitude and duration of the emission depend on the internal
dissipation of the modes of the star, which would be probed by such detections.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figures, 1 table. Submitted to Phys. Rev. D.

Rotational Grazing Increases Wool and Lamb Production from Phalaris-Subterranean Clover Pastures in South Eastern Australia
Wool and lamb production from different grazing systems was compared in a Mediterranean environment near Hamilton in southeastern Australia. The grazing systems were based on combinations of fertiliser inputs and grazing methods that could promote the growth and persistence of phalaris (Phalaris aquatica) and increase animal production compared to ‘typical’ unimproved pastures. In the first 2 years of this experiment, the most productive systems more than doubled ewe stocking rate and wool production, and more than trebled lamb production per hectare, compared to ‘typical’ unimproved pasture, low fertility, set-stocked systems. The change to a well fertilised phalaris/subterranean clover (Trifolium subterraneum) pasture system accounted for 50-80% of these gains in productivity per hectare, with additional benefits from applying extra phosphorus (P) fertiliser and rotational grazing. These results show the potential for producers to adopt simple changes in management practices that can significantly increase wool and lamb production in southeastern Australia
Solving Einstein's Equations With Dual Coordinate Frames
A method is introduced for solving Einstein's equations using two distinct
coordinate systems. The coordinate basis vectors associated with one system are
used to project out components of the metric and other fields, in analogy with
the way fields are projected onto an orthonormal tetrad basis. These field
components are then determined as functions of a second independent coordinate
system. The transformation to the second coordinate system can be thought of as
a mapping from the original ``inertial'' coordinate system to the computational
domain. This dual-coordinate method is used to perform stable numerical
evolutions of a black-hole spacetime using the generalized harmonic form of
Einstein's equations in coordinates that rotate with respect to the inertial
frame at infinity; such evolutions are found to be generically unstable using a
single rotating coordinate frame. The dual-coordinate method is also used here
to evolve binary black-hole spacetimes for several orbits. The great
flexibility of this method allows comoving coordinates to be adjusted with a
feedback control system that keeps the excision boundaries of the holes within
their respective apparent horizons.Comment: Updated to agree with published versio
Localization and chiral symmetry in 2+1 flavor domain wall QCD
We present results for the dependence of the residual mass of domain wall
fermions (DWF) on the size of the fifth dimension and its relation to the
density and localization properties of low-lying eigenvectors of the
corresponding hermitian Wilson Dirac operator relevant to simulations of 2+1
flavor domain wall QCD. Using the DBW2 and Iwasaki gauge actions, we generate
ensembles of configurations with a space-time volume and an
extent of 8 in the fifth dimension for the sea quarks. We demonstrate the
existence of a regime where the degree of locality, the size of chiral symmetry
breaking and the rate of topology change can be acceptable for inverse lattice
spacings GeV.Comment: 59 Pages, 23 figures, 1 MPG linke
