    Recent Fusion Research in the National Institute for Fusion Science

    The National Institute for Fusion Science (NIFS), which was established in 1989, promotes academic approaches toward the exploration of fusion science for steady-state helical reactor and realizes the establishment of a comprehensive understanding of toroidal plasmas as an inter-university research organization and a key center of worldwide fusion research. The Large Helical Device (LHD) Project, the Numerical Simulation Science Project, and the Fusion Engineering Project are organized for early realization of net current free fusion reactor, and their recent activities are described in this paper. The LHD has been producing high-performance plasmas comparable to those of large tokamaks, and several new findings with regard to plasma physics have been obtained. The numerical simulation science project contributes understanding and systemization of the physical mechanisms of plasma confinement in fusion plasmas and explores complexity science of a plasma for realization of the numerical test reactor. In the fusion engineering project, the design of the helical fusion reactor has progressed based on the development of superconducting coils, the blanket, fusion materials and tritium handling

    Multi-scale MHD analysis of LHD plasma with background field changing

    The mechanism of the partial collapse observed in the experiment with the background magnetic field changing in the Large Helical Device (LHD) is numerically investigated with a nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulation. Since the different timescales of the perturbations and the background field changing have to be treated simultaneously for the analysisof this plasma, a multi-scale simulation scheme is developed. The effect of the perturbation dynamics on the equilibrium pressure and rotational transform is taken into account in this scheme. The result indicates that the collapse is caused by the destabilization of an infernal-like mode due to the magnetic hill enhanced by the change of the background field. The mechanismof the reduction of the central beta observed after the partial collapse in the experiment is also analysed in relation to the effect of the background field changing

    Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic, thermal and neutron measurements have clarified that Rb4Mn(MoO4)3 is a model system of a quasi-2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy, exhibiting successive transitions across an intermediate collinear phase. As a rare case for geometrically frustrated magnetism, quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is found for complete, anisotropic phase diagrams as well as magnetic properties.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Examining Preference Heterogeneity in Best-Worst Scaling: Case of Preferences for Job Opportunities in Artisanal Small-Scale Gold Mining (ASGM) Communities in Indonesia

    This research empirically examines the preferences for job-related attributes among rural villagers living close to artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Indonesia. Based on hypothetical scenarios in which a private company collaborates with the local government to establish a food processing industry in these villages, a questionnaire survey designed with best–worst scaling (BWS) was administered to households to determine their preferences. Additionally, the heterogeneity among the villagers was examined by applying a latent class logit (LCL) model. The main household survey was conducted in 2019 in Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province. The estimation results revealed that villagers are separated into four classes, and each class has different and unique preferences. Creating more job opportunities for society is a highly evaluated attribute; however, the preference for skill acquisition differs among groups. The results indicate that accounting for heterogeneous preferences regarding job opportunities is helpful to delink dependency on ASGM and health hazards and improve the livelihoods of rural villagers. The study yields key information to substantially reduce environmental and health hazards in the poverty-plagued ASGM community by facilitating job opportunities in Indonesia

    Relationships between the Prediction of Linear MHD Stability Criteria and the Experiment in LHD

    We analyze the relationship between the experimentally observed pressure gradients at resonant rational surfaces and the theoretically predicted ideal magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) unstable region of global modes in the large helical device (LHD). According to the stability analysis of the ideal MHD modes with a low toroidal mode number, we find that the ideal MHD mode gives a constraint on the operational regime of the pressure gradients in the core. In the edge, a clear saturation of the pressure gradients due to the ideal MHD instability has not been observed up to the high beta regime around 3% as the volume-averaged toridal beta value, where global ideal MHD modes are predictedto be unstable
