A remark on zeta functions of finite graphs via quantum walks

From the viewpoint of quantum walks, the Ihara zeta function of a finite graph can be said to be closely related to its evolution matrix. In this note we introduce another kind of zeta function of a graph, which is closely related to, as to say, the square of the evolution matrix of a quantum walk. Then we give to such a function two types of determinant expressions and derive from it some geometric properties of a finite graph. As an application, we illustrate the distribution of poles of this function comparing with those of the usual Ihara zeta function.Comment: 14 pages, 1 figur

Whole body counter surveys of Miharu-town school children for four consecutive years after the Fukushima NPP accident

Comprehensive whole-body counter surveys of Miharu town school children have been conducted for four consecutive years, in 2011-2014. This represents the only long-term sampling-bias-free study of its type conducted after the Fukushima Dai-ichi accident. For the first time in 2014, a new device called the Babyscan, which has a low 134/137^{134/137}Cs MDA of <50< 50 Bq/body, was used to screen the children shorter than 130 cm. No child in this group was found to have detectable level of radiocesium. Using the MDAs, upper limits of daily intake of radiocesium were estimated for each child. For those screened with the Babyscan, the upper intake limits were found to be <1 Bq/day for 137^{137}Cs. Analysis of a questionnaire filled out by the children's parents regarding their food and water consumption shows that the majority of Miharu children regularly consume local and/or home-grown rice and vegetables. This however does not increase the body burden.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figure

An Infinite Number of Commuting Quantum W^\hat{W}_{\infty} Charges in the SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,R)/U(1) Coset Model

The conformal non-compact SL(2,R)/U(1)SL(2,R)/U(1) coset model in two dimensions has been recently shown to embody a nonlinear W^\hat{W}_\infty current algebra, consisting of currents of spin 2\geq 2 including the energy-momentum tensor. In this letter we explicitly construct an infinite set of commuting quantum W^\hat{W}_\infty charges in the model with k=1k=1. These commuting quantum charges generate a set of infinitely many compatible flows (quantum KP flows), which maintain the nonlinear W^\hat{W}_\infty current algebra invariant.Comment: 15

Genomic data reveals strong differentiation and reduced genetic diversity in island golden eagle populations

Understanding population structure and the extent and distribution of genetic diversity are recognised as central issues in endangered species research, with broad implications for effective conservation management. Advances in whole genome sequencing (WGS) techniques provide greater resolution of genome-wide genetic diversity and inbreeding. Subspecies of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) in Scotland (A. c. chrysaetos) and Japan (A. c. japonica) are endangered; it is therefore important to understand genetic diversity and inbreeding of these small island populations to increase the chances of conservation success. We investigated this using WGS data from golden eagles in Scotland, continental Europe, Japan, and the USA. Following determination of population genetic structure, analysis of heterozygosity and nucleotide diversity revealed reduced levels of genetic diversity together with runs of homozygosity (ROH), suggesting evidence of inbreeding due to recent shared parental ancestry in the island populations. These results highlight the need to consider genetic reinforcement of small isolated golden eagle populations from neighbouring outbred populations, alongside existing efforts to boost population size through within-island conservation translocations and captive breeding programmes
