    Study of biochemical parameters in metabolic bone disease with chronic renal failure

    Background: Renal osteodystrophy and metabolic bone disease are terms that encompass a number of skeletal abnormalities, including osteomalasia, osteitis fibrosa cystica and impaired bone growth in children. The proposed work aimed to evaluate the status of bone health by estimating levels of elements like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes in serum of patients suffering from metabolic bone disease with chronic renal failure.Methods: The routine biochemical investigations were estimated by known standard methods and alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes were done by polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis. The assay values were statistically validated.Results: Serum calcium levels were significantly decreased (p<0.001) in chronic renal failure cases than control whereas, phosphorus and serum alkaline phosphatase levels were significantly increased. Electrophoresis on polyacrylamide gel separated the serum alkaline phosphatase isoenzymes. In control group, two bands of isoenzymes appeared. Whereas, in patients with metabolic bone disease with chronic renal failure, only one diffused band appeared.Conclusions: Decreased calcium levels and increased phosphorus levels in serum indicate metabolic bone disease with chronic renal failure. Elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase is a marker of sick bone. Increased levels of serum alkaline phosphatase are responsible for appearance of diffused band of isoenzyme which is marker for metabolic bone disease with chronic renal failure

    Spin-lattice coupling mediated giant magnetodielectricity across the spin reorientation in Ca2FeCoO5

    The structural, phonon, magnetic, dielectric, and magneto dielectric responses of the pure bulk Brownmillerite compound Ca2FeCoO5 are reported. This compound showed giant magneto dielectric response (10%-24%) induced by strong spin-lattice coupling across its spin reorientation transition (150-250 K). The role of two Debye temperatures pertaining to differently coordinated sites in the dielectric relaxations is established. The positive giant magneto-dielectricity is shown to be a direct consequence of the modulations in the lattice degrees of freedom through applied external field across the spin reorientation transition. Our study illustrates novel control of magneto-dielectricity by tuning the spin reorientation transition in a material that possess strong spin lattice coupling.Comment: 7 pages, 12 figure

    Optimization of Electrostatically Actuated Miniature Compressors for Electronics Cooling

    This paper explores the feasibility of using electrostatically actuated diaphragm compressors in a miniature-scale refrigeration system for electronics cooling. A previously developed experimentally validated analytical model for the diaphragm compressor is used in conjunction with an optimization approach to determine the required dimensions for the compressor. The analysis reveals that the pressure rise and volume flow rate required for the electronics cooling application are not achieved using a single compressor because of material property limitations. A three-dimensional array of compressors is proposed instead with which the cooling requirements and the size restrictions for electronics cooling applications may be simultaneously satisfied

Usually, they are diagnosed in the elderly population, the peak incidence being the fifth to sixth decade. Very few cases of hidradenoma have been documented in children in their first decade of life. Here, we present a rare and interesting case of a 10-year-old boy who presented with swelling on the anterior aspect of the neck, since birth.     Effect of Cooling Conditions, Retrofitting on Strength of Concrete Subjected to Elevated Temperature

    Concrete has a high degree of fire resistance at moderate temperatures. High temperatures, however, cause concrete to lose its stiffness and strength. The effects of cooling techniques and retrofitting on the strength of concrete exposed to high temperatures have not been synchronized in previous studies. This experimental research aims to evaluate the effect of cooling conditions and the effectiveness of retrofitting concrete subjected to elevated temperatures. Four types of concrete: M 20 normal concrete (NC); M 20 metakaolin concrete (MC); M 40 standard concrete (SC); and M 40 self-compacting concrete (SCC) are considered in this study. A total of 864 samples consisting of cube, beam, and cylinder specimens are subjected to sustained elevated temperatures of 400oC, 600oC, and 800oC for 2 hours rating. The weight and strength of half of the heat-damaged samples are assessed following natural air cooling (NAC) and water jet cooling (WJC). The remaining 50% of samples retrofitted with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) are tested to evaluate the upgraded strength. The experimental findings demonstrate that water jet cooling (WJC) causes more strength degradation, and CFRP proves to be effective in restoring the strength of heat-deteriorated specimens.     A Systematic Literature Review of Individuals\u27 Perspectives on Privacy and Genetic Information in the United States

    Concerns about genetic privacy affect individuals\u27 willingness to accept genetic testing in clinical care and to participate in genomics research. To learn what is already known about these views, we conducted a systematic review, which ultimately analyzed 53 studies involving the perspectives of 47,974 participants on real or hypothetical privacy issues related to human genetic data. Bibliographic databases included MEDLINE, Web of Knowledge, and Sociological Abstracts. Three investigators independently screened studies against predetermined criteria and assessed risk of bias. The picture of genetic privacy that emerges from this systematic literature review is complex and riddled with gaps. When asked specifically are you worried about genetic privacy, the general public, patients, and professionals frequently said yes. In many cases, however, that question was posed poorly or only in the most general terms. While many participants expressed concern that genomic and medical information would be revealed to others, respondents frequently seemed to conflate privacy, confidentiality, control, and security. People varied widely in how much control they wanted over the use of data. They were more concerned about use by employers, insurers, and the government than they were about researchers and commercial entities. In addition, people are often willing to give up some privacy to obtain other goods. Importantly, little attention was paid to understanding the factor-sociocultural, relational, and media - that influence people\u27s opinions and decisions. Future investigations should explore in greater depth which concerns about genetic privacy are most salient to people and the social forces and contexts that influence those perceptions. It is also critical to identify the social practices that will make the collection and use of these data more trustworthy for participants as well as to identify the circumstances that lead people to set aside worries and decide to participate in research
