El finançament de les obres de la Seu de Mallorca

The books that are kept in the Capitulary Archive of the "Seu de Mallorca" resume three centuries of the Balearic reign history. The cathedral, started by order of Jaime II around 1306, was not finished until 1601. Although its construction is interesting in itself, the economic contribution of the different social classes from the island that made it possible is a subject as important as the first one. The construction of our most precious gothic architectonic jewel was financed by the Majorcan monarchy, the Church led by the bishop and all social strata. Alms given by the common people deserve a special mention because it played a very important role in the collection of funds. After a detailed study of the "Llibres de Fàbrica" that are kept in the "Seo" (1327-1430), we can confirm that its labor force as well the skilled as the unskilled was in its majority original from Mallorca, and that the construction costs were paid by the population of Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. This fact converts the "Seo" in the gothic monument that better represents the Balearic reality.Los libros que se guardan en el Archivo Capitular de Mallorca de fábrica y financiación de la Seo de Mallorca resumen tres siglos de la historia del reino balear. La catedral, iniciada por Jaime II de Mallorca hacia 1306, no fue terminada hasta 1601. Pero si su construcción es ya de por sí interesante, la aportación financiera hecha por los distintos grupos sociales isleños abre un capítulo tan apasionante como el primero. En la financiación de la catedral de Mallorca intervinieron, además de la monarquía privativa mallorquina y el clero, encabezado por su obispo, todos los estamentos sociales isleños, entre los que cabe destacar la gran contribución popular que, con sus dádivas y limosnas, hizo posible nuestra mejor joya arquitectónica gótica. Después del estudio minucioso de los primeros Llibres de Fàbrica, que se guardan en la Seo (1327 - 1430), podemos afirmar que la mayoría de la mano de obra, tanto especializada como no, fue mayoritariamente de Mallorca, y que el coste de la Obra fue sufragado por las gentes que poblaron Mallorca, Menorca e Ibiza, hecho que convierte la catedral en el monumento gótico que mejor representa nuestra realidad balear
