    Occurrence and spatial-temporal distribution of atrazine and its metabolites in the aquatic environment of the Volturno River estuary, southern Italy

    The present study assesses the spatial distribution and temporal trends of the water dissolved phase (WDP), suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment partitioning of atrazine (ATR) and its metabolites in the Volturno River estuary. The load contribution of ATR and its metabolites in this river to the Central Mediterranean Sea was estimated. Samples were collected in 10 sampling sites during the four seasons. The total concentrations of ATR and DPs detected ranged from 18.1 to 105.5 ng L−1 in WDP, from 4.5 to 63.2 ng L−1 in SPM, and from 4.6 to 18.6 ng g-1 in sediment samples, indicating high levels of these pollutants. Structural equation model and the ratio study indicated that the relationship between sediment and WDP pollutants occurred through the SPM. The pollutants load at the Volturno River in its mouth was evaluated in about 30.4 kg year-1, showing that this river is an important source of these analytes through discharge into Central Mediterranean Sea. Principal component analysis indicated that ATR and its metabolites pollution moves from Volturno River mouth southward and increased in the rainy season. The desethylatrazine-to-atrazine ratio was higher than 0.5 for all samples analyzed, indicating an historical discharge and a long residence time of ATR in sediment about two decades after its ban, and classifying ATR as a nonpoint source contaminant. This study makes up the first record of ATR and its metabolites in superficial water of Southern Italy and provides helpful data as starting point for future studies

    Estimation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution in mediterranean sea from volturno river, southern italy: Distribution, risk assessment and loads

    This study reports the data on the contamination caused by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) drained from the Volturno River. The seasonal and spatial distribution of PAHs in water and sediment samples was assessed. The 16 PAHs were determined in the water dissolved phase (DP), suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediments. A multidimensional statistical approach was used to identify three pollution composite indicators. Contaminant discharges of PAHs into the sea were calculated in about 3158.2 kg/year. Total concentrations of PAHs varied in ranges 434.8 to 872.1 ng g−1 and 256.7 to 1686.3 ng L−1 in sediment samples and in water (DP + SPM), respectively. The statistical results indicated that the PAHs mainly had a pyrolytic source. Considering the sediment quality guidelines (SQGs), the water environmental quality standards (USEPA EQS), and risk quotient (RQ), the Volturno River would be considered as an area in which the environmental integrity is possibly at risk

    Involvement of phosphodiesterase-cGMP-PKG pathway in intracellular Ca2+ oscillations in pituitary GH3 cells

    AbstractThe present study investigates the potential role of the Ca2+-calmodulin-dependent type I phosphodiesterase (PDE)-cGMP-protein kinase G (PKG) pathway in spontaneous [Ca2+]i oscillations in GH3 cells using fura-2 single cell videoimaging. Vinpocetine (2.5–50 ÎŒM), a selective inhibitor of type I PDE, induced a concentration-dependent inhibition of spontaneous [Ca2+]i oscillations in these pituitary cells, and at the same time produced an increase of the intracellular cGMP content. The cell permeable cGMP analog N2,2â€Č-O-dibutyryl-cGMP (dB-cGMP) (1 mM) caused a progressive reduction of the frequency and the amplitude of spontaneous [Ca2+]i oscillations when added to the medium. KT5823 (400 nM), a selective inhibitor of cGMP-dependent protein kinase (PKG), produced an increase of baseline [Ca2+]i and the disappearance of spontaneous [Ca2+]i oscillations. When KT5823 was added before vinpocetine, the PKG inhibitor counteracted the [Ca2+]i lowering effect of the cGMP catabolism inhibitor. Finally, the removal of extracellular Ca2+ or the blockade of L-type voltage-sensitive calcium channels (VSCC) by nimodipine produced a decrease of cytosolic cGMP levels. Collectively, the results of the present study suggest that spontaneous [Ca2+]i oscillations in GH3 cells may be regulated by the activity of type I PDE-cGMP-PKG pathway

    Corporate social responsibility linked to consumer's behavior is a topic increasingly felt during the last years. By administering a questionnaire to consumers, the aim of the present research is to study impacts of responsible initiatives on consumers' purchasing behavior and, besides, possible willingness to pay higher prices for good practice foods. The investigation was conducted through a choice experiment, considering a representative sample of more than 1,660 families, selected on a functional relation to the objectives of the research in the major Italian cities. So the main goal is to explore consumers' preferences linked to business responsible initiatives: Data were analyzed performing a logistic regression analysis and, in order to perform the segmentation of choice, an analysis based on the chi‐squared automatic interaction detector procedure was carried out, using variables explained in the logistic regression. The conclusions are very significant and can be considered also a matter for further discussion

    Recently consumer’s behaviour towards food products has been increasingly influenced by quality and safety and, in that context, genetically modified organisms have taken particular significance: they can be defined as organisms in which the DNA has been altered in a way that does not occur naturally. Moreover, food safety has been the object of increasing attention in recent years as a major consumer concern, because it affects purchasing behaviours. So, the consumption of genetically modified foods appears to be the cause of particular doubts and hesitations among consumers, above all in a particular European country such as Italy. In the present research a survey to analyze the consumption of genetically modified foods among Italian people is presented. Objectives: to explore genetically modified food’s consumption among Italian people and, then, to suggest a statistical model to explain purchasing behaviours in the specific Italian market
