    Melioidosis: A case series from a tertiary care hospital in Assam

    Melioidosis is sporadically reported from various parts of India. We present a case series from Assam, highlighting the varied manifestations of the disease. Three cases of culture-proven melioidosis are presented in whom Burkholderia pseudomallei were isolated from aspirate or blood. Melioidosis had a varied presentation involving multiple abscesses in the soft tissues, liver, spleen, mediastinum, and the subdural space. It presented as either acute fulminant sepsis or followed a chronic indolent course, mimicking tuberculosis. Most cases had predisposing risk factors such as diabetes and chronic alcoholism. &nbsp

    Prison Labour in Colonial India: A Case Study of Assam

    This paper examines the attitude of the British government towards the prisoners of Assam. Moreover, it investigates the policies adopted by the government about prison labour. Prisons in Colonial India were known as the ‘house of industries’ rather than the house of rehabilitation and the disciplinary system that existed inside the prison walls emphasised more on attaining profit by instrumenting various types of punitive labour and rigorous methods of punishment. Throughout the Colonial period, the rules for prison administration was shaped and reshaped according to the needs of the colonial state and prisoners were squeezed in the name of discipline through prison labour. In India, the idea of reformation was boastfully propagated but never fully implemented inside the prisons. Prison and prison labour in colonial India has been discussed over a period of time in various academic platforms; however, no such discussions were made on the context of prisons of Assam. Therefore, through this study, an attempt has been made to offer an overview of the recommendations of the Prison Reform Committees and its implementation about prison labour and manufactures

    The Big 5 Personality Traits And Its Relation With Creativity

    Creativity has been acknowledged as one of the predominant factors influencing individual’s contribution in various domains of life. History shows, that creative people possess unusual traits which make them different from their less creative counterparts. The present study was carried out on a group of reputed creative persons (national award winners) in the field of performing arts, visual arts and innovators in the area of science and technology. The total sample size is 180 (50 performing artists, 50 visual artists, 30 innovators, and 50 corporate executives which constituted the control group) aged between 30-65 years. For this purpose Standard Progressive Matrices developed by Ravens (1996) was used for screening purpose, in addition to the NEO-FFI-3 (Costa and McCrae, 1992) which was used to assess the Big 5 personality areas of openness to experience, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness and neuroticism. To achieve the objectives Mean, SD, Kruskal Wallis ‘H’ test followed by Maan- Whitney ‘U’testwere the statistical tests used. Finally discriminant analysis was applied to strengthen the predictive validity of the test. Results yielded that out of the three creative groups, innovators were found to have a significantly higher mean value on openness to experience and conscientiousness, performing artists were found to have a significantly higher score on extraversion and agreeableness while visual artists were found to score high on neuroticism. Finally, openness to experience was found to be the most discriminating factor between the creative and the less creative (corporate executives)

    Wigner Crystallization in a Quasi-3D Electronic System

    When a strong magnetic field is applied perpendicularly (along z) to a sheet confining electrons to two dimensions (x-y), highly correlated states emerge as a result of the interplay between electron-electron interactions, confinement and disorder. These so-called fractional quantum Hall (FQH) liquids form a series of states which ultimately give way to a periodic electron solid that crystallizes at high magnetic fields. This quantum phase of electrons has been identified previously as a disorder-pinned two-dimensional Wigner crystal with broken translational symmetry in the x-y plane. Here, we report our discovery of a new insulating quantum phase of electrons when a very high magnetic field, up to 45T, is applied in a geometry parallel (y-direction) to the two-dimensional electron sheet. Our data point towards this new quantum phase being an electron solid in a "quasi-3D" configuration induced by orbital coupling with the parallel field

    Abstract: India enjoys very close and robust relations with Vietnam. As partners in the pursuit of common goals, both the countries have a strong stake in the prosperity of the other, especially in the Asian century. The relationship has strengthened significantly since the 1990s following India's economic liberalization and end of the cold war. The two countries enjoy an extensive economic, defence and strategic relationship that have recently blossomed into a comprehensive strategic partnership. The objective of the paper is to examine the different areas of convergence between India and Vietnam in the 21 st century and the role that the US can play in advancing the strategic relation between the two countries. The US can be seen as a vital link bringing India and Vietnam closer, particularly in the context of the significance which it has attached to the Asia-Pacific region in the 21 st century. The US factor in driving cooperation between India and Vietnam has been perceived as one which contributes towards building overall regional growth and development. Moreover, the creation of positive linkages around common interests of the three countries can foster strong and sustainable growth beneficial to the interests of the stakeholders

    An Improvement to Trust Based Cross-Layer Security Protocol against Sybil Attacks (DAS)

    The performance of distributed networks depends on collaboration among distributed entities. To enhance security in distributed networks, such as ad hoc networks, it is important to evaluate the trustworthiness of participating entities since trust is the major driving force for collaboration. The trust based security protocol based on a cross-layer approach attains confidentiality and authentication of packets in both routing and link layers of MANETs but it doesn’t address few attacks like Bad Mouthing Attack, On-off Attack, and Conflicting Behavior Attack, Sybil Attack and Newcomer Attack. In this paper we present DAS, a protocol for reducing of the corruptive/malicious influences of Sybil attacks. Malicious users in general may create multiple identities with few trust relationships. Hence there is a disproportionately small gap in the graph between the Sybil nodes and the honest nodes. DAS exploits this property so as to bind the number of identities a malicious user can create.
