    How Postsecondary Education Improves Adult Outcomes for Supplemental Security Income Children with Severe Hearing Impairments

    This is a case study of SSI children who apply for postsecondary education at the National Technical Institute of the Deaf (NTID) within the Rochester Institute of Technology. We estimate the likelihood that an SSI child will graduate from NTID relative to other hearing impaired NTID applicants and estimate the influence of graduation from NTID on participation in the SSI adult program and later success in the labor market. To do so we create a unique longitudinal administrative records data set (n=5,638) based on administrative records from NTID linked to Social Security Administration (SSA) microdata. We find that SSI children who graduate from NTID spend less time on the SSI adult program and have higher earnings than those who do not graduate. However, we also find that SSI children who apply to NTID have a greater risk of not graduating than their fellow deaf students who did not participate in the SSI program as children. Our findings suggest that greater effort may be necessary to prepare SSI children for postsecondary education and that the currently SSA-funded youth transition demonstration projects are necessary to explore how such efforts can improve adult outcomes for SSI children with disabilities

    Fragmentation dynamics of the ethyl bromide and ethyl iodide cations: a velocity-map imaging study

    The photodissociation dynamics of ethyl bromide and ethyl iodide cations (C2H5Br+ and C2H5I+) have been studied. Ethyl halide cations were formed through vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoionization of the respective neutral parent molecules at 118.2 nm, and were photolysed at a number of ultraviolet (UV) photolysis wavelengths, including 355 nm and wavelengths in the range from 236 to 266 nm. Time-of-flight mass spectra and velocity-map images have been acquired for all fragment ions and for ground (Br) and spin–orbit excited (Br*) bromine atom products, allowing multiple fragmentation pathways to be investigated. The experimental studies are complemented by spin–orbit resolved ab initio calculations of cuts through the potential energy surfaces (along the RC–Br/I stretch coordinate) for the ground and first few excited states of the respective cations. Analysis of the velocity-map images indicates that photoexcited C2H5Br+ cations undergo prompt C–Br bond fission to form predominantly C2H5+ + Br* products with a near-limiting ‘parallel’ recoil velocity distribution. The observed C2H3+ + H2 + Br product channel is thought to arise via unimolecular decay of highly internally excited C2H5+ products formed following radiationless transfer from the initial excited state populated by photon absorption. Broadly similar behaviour is observed in the case of C2H5I+, along with an additional energetically accessible C–I bond fission channel to form C2H5 + I+ products. HX (X = Br, I) elimination from the highly internally excited C2H5X+ cation is deemed the most probable route to forming the C2H4+ fragment ions observed from both cations. Finally, both ethyl halide cations also show evidence of a minor C–C bond fission process to form CH2X+ + CH3 products

    Massive stellar systems: observational challenges and perspectives in the E-ELT era

    We introduce the empirical framework concerning optical and near-infrared (NIR) photometry of crowded stellar fields. In particular, we address the impact that linear detectors and analytical PSF played in improving the accuracy and the precision of multi-band color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). We focus our attention on recent findings based on deep NIR images collected with Adaptive Optics (AO) systems at the 8-10m class telescopes and discuss pros and cons of the different approaches. We also discuss the estimate of the absolute age of globular clusters using a well defined knee along the lower main sequence. We mention the role which the current AO-assisted instruments will have in addressing longstanding astrophysical problems of the Galactic center. Finally, we outline the role of first generation of E-ELT instruments upon photometry and spectroscopy of crowded stellar fields

    Program transformations using temporal logic side conditions

    This paper describes an approach to program optimisation based on transformations, where temporal logic is used to specify side conditions, and strategies are created which expand the repertoire of transformations and provide a suitable level of abstraction. We demonstrate the power of this approach by developing a set of optimisations using our transformation language and showing how the transformations can be converted into a form which makes it easier to apply them, while maintaining trust in the resulting optimising steps. The approach is illustrated through a transformational case study where we apply several optimisations to a small program

    Problematising international placements as a site of intercultural learning

    This paper theorises some of the learning outcomes of a three-year project concerning student learning in international social work placements in Malaysia. The problematic issue of promoting cultural and intercultural competence through such placements is examined, where overlapping hegemonies are discussed in terms of isomorphism of social work models, that of the nation state, together with those relating to professional values and knowledge, and the tyrannies of received ideas. A critical discussion of cultural competence as the rationale for international placements is discussed in terms of the development of the graduating social worker as a self-reflexive practitioner. The development of sustainable international partnerships able to support student placement and the issue of non-symmetrical reciprocation, typical of wide socio-economic differentials across global regions, is additionally discussed

    Amorphous Solid Dispersions of Lidocaine and Lidocaine HCl Produced by Ball Milling with Well-Defined RAFT-Synthesised Methacrylic Acid Polymers

    This study focuses on the use of methacrylic acid polymers synthesised via the Reversible Addition Fragmentation chain Transfer (RAFT) polymerisation method for the production of amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) by ball milling, to kinetically solubilize a poorly water-soluble model drug. The solid-state characteristics and the physical stability of the formulations were investigated using X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and infrared spectroscopy. This was followed by dissolution studies in different media. It was discovered that the acidic polymers of methacrylic acid were capable of interacting with the weakly basic drug lidocaine and its hydrochloride salt form to produce ASDs when a polymer to drug ratio of 70:30 w/w was used. The ASDs remained amorphous following storage under accelerated aging conditions (40 °C and 75% relative humidity) over 8 months. Fast dissolution and increased lidocaine solubility in different media were obtained from the ASDs owing to the reduced microenvironment pH and enhanced solubilization of the drug caused by the presence of the acidic polymer in the formulation. Production of ASDs using well-defined RAFT-synthesised acidic polymers is a promising formulation strategy to enhance the pharmaceutical properties of basic poorly water-soluble drugs
