Pre-service Secondary teachers’ learning styles
Every student copes with his own learning in a particular way and teaching style can determine learning
style. This research is developed at a Faculty of Education Sciences where pre-service teachers are being trained. The
aim is to analyze the different students’ learning styles in the Master for Secondary Teachers’ Training. We have used
the VARK Questionnaire that includes 4 different learning styles (or sensory modalities): visual, aural, read/write, and
kinesthetic. Participants, who were graduated in different degrees, studied in 9 different specialities of the master at
Catholic University of Valencia. Results indicated that girls were more likely to prefer a read/write learning style than
boys. Furthermore, the most important learning style was aural one, irrespectively of specialities. We conclude that our
results can be caused by Master classes, in which students listen to the teacher and teacher explains without a feed-back.
Differences among these findings and other researches are discussed.Educació
Resilience and COVID-19. An Analysis in University Students during Confinement
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed life for millions of people. The social-emotional
consequences of the confinement need to be analysed urgently. This study examines self-perceived
resilience and its most important determining factors in a sample of university students facing COVID
confinement. The measuring instrument used is the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale, divided into
four factors and applied to a sample of 253 graduate and postgraduate students. Different methods
of descriptive statistics and statistical hypothesis testing were used to calculate the results with
the statistical program SPSS–22. The results showed generally high levels of resilience among the
university students analysed, irrespective of socio-demographic variables. Factor analysis shows
resilience to be highest among male students and those over 25. Self-perceived resilience was also
higher among students who lived alone or with people other than their parents. Finally, students of
the health sciences were more likely to adapt to change, deal with today’s challenges, and think of
themselves as people capable of bouncing back after hardship.Educació
Higher education in the fight against poverty from the capabilities approach: The case of Spain
This article describes relative poverty in Spain in relation to the other States in the European Union, following the European indicator AROPE. The official data provided by the
National Statistical Institute of Spain and by Eurostat, refer to the year 2014 (the last one for
which definitive data are available is 2015). Given the relative poverty of Spanish population,
the failure of conventional economic theories, which conceive social development as GDP
growth, is clear, and it is argued in favour of the human capabilities approach as a more adequate option for development, from a theoretical-practical point of view, for the reduction
and/or eradication of poverty, as well as the appropriateness of a new conception of Higher
Education, structured around central topics of the capabilities approach, to empower citizenship with such objective. The pedagogical proposals discussed here are as follows: (1) the
conception of Higher Education Institutions from the approach of capability development,
and aimed at social responsibility; (2) the formation of a university community as agents
of their lives and communities; (3) the learning by the university community of the values
in the capabilities approach; (4) the option of the university community for participation in
public affairs in the pursuit of the common good; (5) the primacy of the formation of the
university community as agents of sustainability agents.
The capabilities approach and values of sustainability: Towards an inclusive Pedagogy
Different models of development have a different impact on sustainability. In this paper, we contrast the
development model as growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), dominant in economic theories,
with the model of human development or capabilities. The objective is to show the development of capabilities as a theoretical-practical perspective to guide education towards sustainability, a goal assigned
by UNESCO. The method used is hermeneutic. The conclusions are: the capabilities approach defends the
values required for sustainability and this approach convincingly argues for the political principles and
good practices that should govern education.Educació
Challenges and tensions of the twenty-first century's educational system. A sight from pedagogy.
nuevas realidades sociales, profesionales, productivas y culturales.
Education today comes up against to a series of challenges and tensions those who should be replied. The shape of a
changing and unforeseeable international framework requires ready people who are able to adapt to the cultural, productive,
professional and social new realities. It is necessary, therefore, rethinking the priorities, targets and structures of our educational
system. Our reflections in this paper about some of these challenges –some of them are new and others pending- try to contribute
some keys to education debate. The twenty-first century demands a school for the twenty-first century. In this task pedagogues
and teachers have an unavoidable commitment.Educació
«Exclusive» and «Comprehensive». Joaquín Ruiz-Giménez and the Origins behind the Spread of Secondary Education in Spain

Setting out a study about Ortega y Gasset from a sociological and pedagogical view
comparing it with the current situation, can help us to find out certain problematic
issues that have remained throughout the Spanish historiography. In the first
philosophical and evolutionary stage (idealistic pedagogy) where Ortega thinks deeply
about the power of education as a society transformer, a series of totally current
educational proposals which could be useful to reconsider the role of education
nowadays are described to us.Educació
Education in values program. Moral formation in secondary education students
No obstante, no
misma. The expression “educating in values” may seem redundant at first sight,
because we think it’s impossible to educate in a different way. However,
it’s not enough that the teachers declare the values, it would be necessary
to implement a certain teaching styles that would promote the relations
between teachers and students, and between them and the curriculum
content. The family enviroment should not be oblivious to this reality.
Thus, any serious attempt to develop a program on values should have
as a fundamental base an adequate and solid pedagogical formation of
teachers, with a good knowledge of specific techniques and strategies for
the education in human values. Therefore, there is a need to present in a
personalized way – both for groups and individuals – a program of values
education for pupils of Compulsory Secondary Education in the city of
Valencia, which can respond to the needs of the recipients of the same.Educació
