Portability of Prolog programs: theory and case-studies
(Non-)portability of Prolog programs is widely considered as an important
factor in the lack of acceptance of the language. Since 1995, the core of the
language is covered by the ISO standard 13211-1. Since 2007, YAP and SWI-Prolog
have established a basic compatibility framework. This article describes and
evaluates this framework. The aim of the framework is running the same code on
both systems rather than migrating an application. We show that today, the
portability within the family of Edinburgh/Quintus derived Prolog
implementations is good enough to allow for maintaining portable real-world

Introduction to the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming Special Issue
We are proud to introduce this special issue of the Journal of Theory and
Practice of Logic Programming (TPLP), dedicated to the full papers accepted for
the 28th International Conference on Logic Programming (ICLP). The ICLP
meetings started in Marseille in 1982 and since then constitute the main venue
for presenting and discussing work in the area of logic programming
PROVIDING OPTIMUM WOUND HEALING CONDITIONS DURING THE PROLIFERATIVE STAGE USING KERRAFIBRE
Abstract : In order to analyze the role of a new structured fibrous dressing in the proliferative stage of chronic wound healing in hard to heal wounds, a case study was performed on a stagnant venous ulcer, which remained non-healed in the past 7 months. All chronicity factors that could affect wound healing were excluded, including biofilm (with the use of polihexanide+betaine, Prontosan range), and compression therapy was provided. The results were very interesting with healing achieved in 7 weeks of treatment. Most of times it is not easy to find/select a dressing to promote granulation and epithelisation, once ideal cleaning/debridement and bioburden control are achieved. Some dressings do not provide a good healing rate, lead to bioburden elevation during time and recurrence in the use of antimicrobials. Other options to promote proliferation are very expensive and need a secondary dressing. Treatment with kerrafibre showned to be very cost effective. Its is also implicit the important role of advanced wound care centers versus conventional care.This case study was originally presented as a poster at Wounds UK 2014 Conference, at Harrogate, England, United Kingdom
Gait transition and modulation in a quadruped robot : a brainstem-like modulation approach
In this article, we propose a bio-inspired architecture for a quadruped robot that is able to initiate/stop
locomotion; generate different gaits, and to easily select and switch between the different gaits according
to the speed and/or the behavioral context. This improves the robot stability and smoothness while
locomoting.
We apply nonlinear oscillators to model Central Pattern Generators (CPGs). These generate the
rhythmic locomotor movements for a quadruped robot. The generated trajectories are modulated by a
tonic signal, that encodes the required activity and/or modulation. This drive signal strength is mapped
onto sets of CPG parameters. By increasing the drive signal, locomotion can be elicited and velocity
increased while switching to the appropriate gaits. This drive signal can be specified according to sensory
information or set a priori.
The system is implemented in a simulated and real AIBO robot. Results demonstrate the adequacy of
the architecture to generate and modulate the required coordinated trajectories according to a velocity
increase; and to smoothly and easily switch among the different motor behaviors.The authors gratefully acknowledge Keir Pearson for all the discussions and help. A ideia de uma Comunidade dos Países de
Língua Portuguesa (CPLP), inspiradora da
génese da sua recente institucionalização, precedeu,
de mais de um século, a realidade que
traduz, actualmente, o resultado da vontade
política de oito estados soberanos. Essa ideia
surgiu da verificação da existência partilhada
de factores de ordem cultural, designadamente,
a utilização comum da língua portuguesa falada
e escrita, que constitui o meio de expressão
de mais de 230 milhões de pessoas. A percepção
política dos estados sobre a importância da língua
como factor de projecção estratégica, adquire
expressão inequívoca nas políticas
externas dos países europeus cuja história foi
tecida através dos contactos com o resto do
mundo.
Os povos dos países da CPLP, bem como as
comunidades de lusofalantes espalhadas pelo
mundo, formam um espaço de expressão cultural,
cujo significado transcende as fronteiras
territoriais da lusofonia, definindo-se em termos
de factor de projeccção estratégica potencial.
Neste contexto, a CPLP constitui o enquadramento
institucional que reúne as condições
necessárias à defesa da lusofonia e ao desenvolvimento
da língua portuguesa como património
cultural, e factor de projecção estratégica,
cujo desenvolvimento importa tanto a

Omnidirectional locomotion in a quadruped robot : a CPG-based approach
Quadruped locomotion on rough terrain and un-
predictable environments is still a challenge, where the concept
of Central Pattern Generators (CPG) has brought interesting
ideas.
In this contribution we present a CPG design based on
coupled oscillators, generating the required stepping movements
of a limb for omnidirectional motion. Movements are on-
line modulated through small value changes in the CPG’s
parameters as required to perform the desired omnidirectional
locomotion in a quadruped robot. We also present a method-
ology to modulate the CPG’s parameters, reducing the control
dimensionality, described in terms of the robot’s translational
speed, angular velocity and walking orientation.
Results show the proposed controller is well suited for
the online generation and modulation of the motor patterns
required to achieve the desired omnidirectional walking motion
Robot phase entrainment on quadruped CPG controller
Central Pattern Generators are used in several kinds of robot locomotion, from swimming and flying, to bipeds,
quadrupeds and hexapods. It is thought that this approach can yield better results in dynamical and natural
environments. In this work we expand a previous quadruped locomotion controller and propose a method
to couple the step cycle phase onto the locomotor CPG of a quadruped robot, creating a feedback pathway
to coordinate the phases of each leg to the phase of the step cycle. This approach is tested in a simulated
quadruped robot and the performed locomotion is evaluated. Results demonstrate that the proposed phase
coupling synchronizes the swing step phase of ipsilateral legs to the respective step phase of the cycle and
show an improvement in stability of the performed walk gait.(undefined
Overeducation: dynamics, wounds and scars
The present study investigates the extent to which the e ects of entering the la-
bor market in overeducated positions pertrain throughout workers careers. Adopting a
time-to-event modeling approach, we analyze overeducation persistency and evaluate the
existence of state duration dependence. We further investigate future earnings e ects
associated with past overeducation employment. Our results report strong entrapment
e ects rising from overeducation and for overeducated workers to yield lower returns
for their schooling investment than their equally matched peers. We also conclude the
e ects of overeducation to perpetuate to future job allocations, with workers having an
overeducation employment background reported as su ering wage losses ranging from
3.5% to 14%
