A multidisciplinary perspective on COVID-19 exit strategies

Lockdowns and associated measures imposed in response to the COVID-19 crisis inflict severe damage to society. Across the globe, scientists and policymakers study ways to lift measures while maintaining control of virus spread in circumstances that continuously change due to the evolution of new variants and increasing vaccination coverage. In this process, it has become clear that finding and analysing exit strategies, which are a key aspect of pandemic mitigation in all consecutive waves of infection, is not solely a matter of epidemiological modeling but has many different dimensions that need to be balanced and therefore requires input from many different disciplines. Here, we document an attempt to investigate exit strategies from a multidisciplinary perspective through the Science versus Corona project in the Netherlands. In this project, scientists and laypeople were challenged to submit (components of) exit strategies. A selection of these were implemented in a formal model, and we have evaluated the scenarios from a multidisciplinary perspective, utilizing expertise in epidemiology, economics, psychology, law, mathematics, and history. We argue for the integration of multidisciplinary perspectives on COVID-19 and more generally in pandemic mitigation, highlight open challenges, and present an agenda for further research into exit strategies and their assessmen

Whether they cover two years (a mutiny in the Eighty Years War - Kattenberg) or seven years (Jewish persecution and trials of collaborators in the Netherlands and Belgium ‒ Wouters and Zurné) or deal with centuries (the water-board landowners of Rijnland and Schieland ‒ Van Tielhof and Belgian diplomats ‒ Leenders) the incidents, practices and developments considered in these articles all add something new to the historical debate and at the same time demonstrate the topicality of these historical questions.    Of ze nu twee jaar (een muiterij in de Tachtigjarige Oorlog ‒ Kattenberg) of  zeven jaar (Jodenvervolging en Daderprocessen in Nederland en België ‒ Wouters en Zurné) omvatten of eeuwen beslaan (de ingelanden van Rijnland en Schieland ‒ Van Tielhof en Belgische diplomaten ‒ Leenders) de in deze artikelen besproken gebeurtenissen, praktijken en ontwikkelingen voegen allemaal iets nieuws toe aan het historisch debat en demonstreren tegelijkertijd de actualiteit van deze historische kwesties.

On Friday 8 November 2013 the Royal Netherlands Historical Society (rnhs) in cooperation with the Vereniging voor Vrouwen- en Gendergeschiedenis (vvg) held its annual Autumn Congress, this time dedicated to Women 1813-1913-2013. One hundred years ago women’s organizations held a vast exhibition in recognition of the first centenary of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. At the second centenary, the rnhs and the vvg took the opportunity to review the position of women in the Netherlands in the last century. This special issue features a selection of the lectures delivered that day. Vrijdag 8 november 2013 was het jaarlijkse Najaarscongres van het Koninklijk Nederlands Historisch Genootschap (knhg), in samenwerking met de Vereniging voor Vrouwen- en Gendergeschiedenis (vvg), gewijd aan ‘De Vrouw 1813-1913-2013’. Vrouwenorganisaties organiseerden honderd jaar geleden ter gelegenheid van het eerste eeuwfeest van hetKoninkrijk der Nederlanden een omvangrijke tentoonstelling. Ter gelegenheid van het tweede eeuwfeest maakten het knhg en de vvg de balans op van de positie van vrouwen in Nederland in de afgelopen honderd jaar. Dit themanummer bevat een selectie uit die dag gehouden lezingen.</p
