Luces, sombras y paradojas del ciclo de creación y acceso a la información en el actual contexto tecnológico
Information and communication technologies allow a continuous enrichment of the circle of creation, storing and access to knowledge. However, this very possibility is dimmed by commercial and corporate interests, as well as by the divide between countries and social sectors. This article describes actual gaps in the access to information, obstacles in current scholarly communication models, paradoxes in copyright legislation in the digital environment, and issues related to digital preservation. The role of librarians facing the obstacles that hinder social right to information

Algo más que información: la necesaria alianza entre información y comprensión
Nowadays, universities must educate professionals and researchers in a reality where knowledge and skills change constantly and grow exponentially, coming from a wealth of information sources and supports, to say nothing about the difficulty in the access and selection. Moreover,
societies in general live a complex situation where unmanageable quantities of information are close to the impossibility to discriminate quality and pertinence, to the lack of knowledge about sources to find the
relevant information, and to social and economic barriers to access information resources using technologies in constant evolution. In this context and in recent years, academic libraries have faced the need for a dramatic change in their models of selecting, processing and making
information available, as well as their ways of offering services. In this scenario, access and use of information rise as a key element to the efficient performance of individuals in the Information Society, and universities must seek, as a major objective on the side of its students, that they acquire the necessary competencies in the access and use of information. In this article, such competencies and abilities are defined and described. Finally, the role of universities and academic libraries in
the area of information literacy is also presented

Colaboración institucional para la preservación digital en bibliotecas argentinas
The Digital Preservation Project in Argentine libraries is coordinated by the Central Library of the Exact and Natural Sciences Faculty of the University of Buenos Aires. It was set up as a means to meet long term preservation needs of digital collections in libraries, and to bridge the lack of digital preservation policies and practices in the country. The project collaborative institutional framework, objetives, steps and expected results are described. In addition, the results of a diagnosis of digital preservation situation in 12 Argentine libraries are summarised and analised
Oxidative stress in mouse liver caused by dietary amino acid deprivation : protective effect of methionine
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of a diet depleted of amino acids (protein-free diet, or PFD), as well as the supplementation with methionine (PFD+Met), on the antioxidant status of the female mouse liver. With this purpose, cytosolic protein spots from two-dimensional non-equilibrium pH gel electrophoresis were identified by several procedures, such as mass spectrometry, Western blot, gel matching and enzymatic activity. PFD decreased the contents of catalase (CAT), peroxiredoxin I (Prx-I), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) by 67%, 37% and 45%, respectively. Gene expression analyses showed that PFD caused a decrease in CAT (−20%) and GPx (−30%) mRNA levels but did not change that of Prx-I. It was also found that, when compared to a normal diet, PFD increased the liver contents of both reactive oxygen species (+50%) and oxidized protein (+88%) and decreased that of glutathione (−45%). Supplementation of PFD with Met prevented these latter effects to varying degrees, whereas CAT, Prx-I and GPx mRNA levels resulted unmodified. Present results suggest that dietary amino acid deprivation deranges the liver antioxidant defences, and this can be, in part, overcome by supplementation with Met.Fil: Ronchi, Virginia Paola.
