Korean law in the Global Economy
This article is a book review of Sang-Hyun Song (ed) Korean Law in the Global Economy (Bak Young Sa Publishing Co, Seoul, 1996) 1500 + viii pages (including index), US$197 (including airmail, tax and handling). The book is a key reference text that covers virtually all aspects of Korean law relevant to New Zealanders, with the author arguing that it belongs in every New Zealand library. While the book suffers from the occasional typographical error, Nottage concludes that the book is an excellent resource, and Professor Song has succeeded in his aim of offering the means to achieve a basic understanding of the Korean law and legal system as they operate in the real world.

dissertationThe dissertation examines Saudi oil policy, focusing mainly on the first half of the 1980s. In this period, Saudi Arabia played a "swing producer" role to control oil prices in the world oil market. This behavior of Saudi decision-makers can be understood within the economic framework of the "dominant producer" model. After interdisciplinary research on previous political and economic studies of Saudi oil policy, the dissertation concludes that the basic notion of Saudi oil policy as a "swing producer" was intended to meet Saudi Arabia's long-term political and economic interests. It was therefore logical for Saudi officials to implement the oil policy of "swing producer" to maximize the long-term economic value of Saudi oil, since this would also contribute to the political consolidation of the Saudi regime. However, there are several questions still remaining in the details of this oil policy. In contrast to the argument of the "dominant producer" model, why did Saudi Arabia try to achieve relatively high oil prices at the expense of its already reduced market share during this period? If Saudi oil policy as a "swing producer" was derived primarily from the state's long-term economic interests, why did it suddenly give up this role in the summer of 1985? To answer these questions, it was necessary to examine Saudi oil policy since December 1976, because it was at this point that the state began to implement an oil policy based on its national interests. After a comprehensive study on Saudi oil policy during boom and slump periods, I have identified the main priorities of Saudi oil policy in these two different periods, and have tried to draw a conclusion that provides the readers with plausible answers to the main questions in my dissertation
The Abrahamic Pilgrimage Story in Sermons: An Ontological-Narrative Foundation of Asian American Life in Faith
Sang Hyun Lee and many other Asian American scholars have found that the Abrahamic pilgrimage story has been an ontological-narrative backbone of Asian American faith constructs. This article further explores their previous research by suggesting three distinct theological narrative styles of the given Abrahamic pilgrimage saga: the allegorical- typological narrative style, the illustrative narrative style, and the eschatologicalsymbolic narrative style. However, though distinct, the styles are closely associated with one another. I will show sermon excerpts by Asian American preachers that are good examples of the theological-spiritual embodiment of the three styles

DETERMINATION OF LINEAR AND NONLINEAR ROLL DAMPING COEFFICIENTS OF A SHIP SECTION USING CFD
The most prevalently used method to obtain the nonlinear roll damping coefficient is the free roll decay test. However, this method can only be conducted at the resonance frequency and thus cannot consider the effect of the frequency. This is a certain limitation as the resonance frequency can be changed at any time by the ship’s loading conditions. Therefore, it is worth investigating the frequency dependency of the nonlinear roll damping coefficients. In this study, a numerical method was proposed to derive the linear and nonlinear roll damping coefficients of ships at different frequencies. Fully nonlinear CFD simulations of forced harmonic roll motion were conducted and the roll damping coefficients were calculated. Then, the damping coefficients were decomposed into the linear and nonlinear components using the linear regression analysis. The linear roll damping coefficients were compared with potential coefficients and showed a good agreement, while the nonlinear roll damping coefficients were compared with the coefficients calculated using a semi-empirical method. The nonlinear roll damping coefficients calculated from the proposed method showed a strong frequency dependency. Finally, possible rationales for the frequency dependence of the nonlinear roll damping coefficient were investigated
A NUMERICAL STUDY ON THE OPEN WATER PERFORMANCE OF A PROPELLER WITH SINUSOIDAL PITCH MOTION
When a ship operates in waves, the ship moves with 6 degrees-of-freedom, and a propeller at the stern of the ship cannot avoid moving due to the ship motion. Therefore, it is important to analyse the propulsion performance while considering the ship motion in waves for efficient ship operation. The pitch motion of the ship has a dominant effect on the variation of the propeller performance and results in sinusoidal pitch motion of the propeller. In this study, a numerical analysis was done using a KP458 model propeller with a diameter of 10 cm, which was designed for the KLVCC2 body plan. The propeller performance was calculated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) at several constant tilt angles. Numerical simulations were then conducted with sinusoidal pitch motion in several conditions of varying pitch angle. The variations of the thrust and torque of the propeller in sinusoidal pitch motion were compared with the results obtained in constant tilt angles
Enhanced cardiac expression of two isoforms of matrix metalloproteinase-2 in experimental diabetes mellitus.
BackgroundDiabetic cardiomyopathy (DM CMP) is defined as cardiomyocyte damage and ventricular dysfunction directly associated with diabetes independent of concomitant coronary artery disease or hypertension. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), especially MMP-2, have been reported to underlie the pathogenesis of DM CMP by increasing extracellular collagen content.PurposeWe hypothesized that two discrete MMP-2 isoforms (full length MMP-2, FL-MMP-2; N-terminal truncated MMP-2, NTT-MMP-2) are induced by high glucose stimulation in vitro and in an experimental diabetic heart model.MethodsRat cardiomyoblasts (H9C2 cells) were examined to determine whether high glucose can induce the expression of the two isoforms of MMP-2. For the in vivo study, we used the streptozotocin-induced DM mouse heart model and age-matched controls. The changes of each MMP-2 isoform expression in the diabetic mice hearts were determined using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Immunohistochemical stains were conducted to identify the location and patterns of MMP-2 isoform expression. Echocardiography was performed to compare and analyze the changes in cardiac function induced by diabetes.ResultsQuantitative RT-PCR and immunofluorescence staining showed that the two MMP-2 isoforms were strongly induced by high glucose stimulation in H9C2 cells. Although no definite histologic features of diabetic cardiomyopathy were observed in diabetic mice hearts, left ventricular systolic dysfunction was determined by echocardiography. Quantitative RT-PCR and IHC staining showed this abnormal cardiac function was accompanied with the increases in the mRNA levels of the two isoforms of MMP-2 and related to intracellular localization.ConclusionTwo isoforms of MMP-2 were induced by high glucose stimulation in vitro and in a Type 1 DM mouse heart model. Further study is required to examine the role of these isoforms in DM CMP
Directional water-transport fabrics achieved by wettablity gradient from superhydrophobicity to hydrophilicity
In this study, we demonstrate that fabrics having a wettability gradient from superhydrophobic to hydrophilic through the thickness direction show a novel directional water transfer effect: water can transfer only from the superhydrophobic to the hydrophilic side, but not in the opposite direction unless an external force is applied. A sol-gel technology was used to prepare a superhydrophobic coating on fabrics, and the coated fabrics showed water contact-angle as high as 165°. When the coated fabric was subjected to a photochemistry treatment from one fabric side, the irradiated surface turned hydrophilic permanently, while the back side still maintained the superhydrophobicity. The treated fabric can transfer water droplet rapidly from hydrophobic to hydrophilic side, and the pressure allowing water breakthrough the fabric is different considerably between the two fabric sides. The directional water transfer effect is also affected by the wettability gradient. Such a directional water transfer coating may be useful to develop new functional fabrics for defence applications
