Multi-Terabyte EIDE Disk Arrays running Linux RAID5
High-energy physics experiments are currently recording large amounts of data
and in a few years will be recording prodigious quantities of data. New methods
must be developed to handle this data and make analysis at universities
possible. Grid Computing is one method; however, the data must be cached at the
various Grid nodes. We examine some storage techniques that exploit recent
developments in commodity hardware. Disk arrays using RAID level 5 (RAID-5)
include both parity and striping. The striping improves access speed. The
parity protects data in the event of a single disk failure, but not in the case
of multiple disk failures.
We report on tests of dual-processor Linux Software RAID-5 arrays and
Hardware RAID-5 arrays using a 12-disk 3ware controller, in conjunction with
250 and 300 GB disks, for use in offline high-energy physics data analysis. The
price of IDE disks is now less than $1/GB. These RAID-5 disk arrays can be
scaled to sizes affordable to small institutions and used when fast random

Effects of arcing due to spacecraft charging on spacecraft survival
A quantitative assessment of the hazard associated with spacecraft charging and arcing on spacecraft systems is presented. A literature survey on arc discharge thresholds and characteristics was done and gaps in the data and requirements for additional experiments were identified. Calculations of coupling of arc discharges into typical spacecraft systems were made and the susceptibility of typical spacecraft to disruption by arc discharges was investigated. Design guidelines and recommended practices to reduce or eliminate the threat of malfunction and failures due to spacecraft charging/arcing were summarized

Time-reversal frameness and superselection
We show that appropriate superpositions of motional states are a reference
frame resource that enables breaking of time -reversal superselection so that
two parties lacking knowledge about the other's direction of time can still
communicate. We identify the time-reversal reference frame resource states and
determine the corresponding frameness monotone, which connects time-reversal
frameness to entanglement. In contradistinction to other studies of reference
frame quantum resources, this is the first analysis that involves an
antiunitary rather than unitary representation.Comment: 10 p
Dynamic hysteresis from zigzag domain walls
We investigate dynamic hysteresis in ferromagnetic thin films with zigzag
domain walls. We introduce a discrete model describing the motion of a wall in
a disordered ferromagnet with in-plane magnetization, driven by an external
magnetic field, considering the effects of dipolar interactions and anisotropy.
We analyze the effects of external field frequency and temperature on the
coercive field by Monte Carlo simulations, and find a good agreement with the
experimental data reported in literature for Fe/GaAs films. This implies that
dynamic hysteresis in this case can be explained by a single propagating domain

Redundant Arrays of IDE Drives
The next generation of high-energy physics experiments is expected to gather
prodigious amounts of data. New methods must be developed to handle this data
and make analysis at universities possible. We examine some techniques that use
recent developments in commodity hardware. We test redundant arrays of
integrated drive electronics (IDE) disk drives for use in offline high-energy
physics data analysis. IDE redundant array of inexpensive disks (RAID) prices
now equal the cost per terabyte of million-dollar tape robots! The arrays can
be scaled to sizes affordable to institutions without robots and used when fast
random access at low cost is important. We also explore three methods of moving
data between sites; internet transfers, hot pluggable IDE disks in FireWire

Outflows in Infrared-Luminous Starbursts at z < 0.5. I. Sample, NaI D Spectra, and Profile Fitting
We have conducted a spectroscopic survey of 78 starbursting infrared-luminous
galaxies at redshifts up to z = 0.5. We use moderate-resolution spectroscopy of
the NaI D interstellar absorption feature to directly probe the neutral phase
of outflowing gas in these galaxies. Over half of our sample are ultraluminous
infrared galaxies that are classified as starbursts; the rest have infrared
luminosities in the range log(L_IR/L_sun) = 10.2 - 12.0. The sample selection,
observations, and data reduction are described here. The absorption-line
spectra of each galaxy are presented. We also discuss the theory behind
absorption-line fitting in the case of a partially-covered, blended absorption
doublet observed at moderate-to-high resolution, a topic neglected in the
literature. A detailed analysis of these data is presented in a companion

âItâs better than daytime televisionâ: questioning the socio-spatial impacts of massage parlours on residential communities
It has been shown that street sex work is problematic for some communities, but there is less evidence of the effects of brothels. Emerging research also suggests that impact discourses outlined by residential communities and in regulatory policies should be critiqued, because they are often based on minority community voices, and limited tangible evidence is used to masquerade wider moral viewpoints about the place of sex work. Using a study of residents living in close proximity to brothels in Blackpool, this paper argues that impact is socially and spatially fluid. Impact needs to be evaluated in a more nuanced manner, which is considerate of the heterogeneity of (even one type of) sex work, and the community in question. Brothels in Blackpool had a variety of roles in the everyday socio-spatial fabric; thus also questioning the common assumption that sex work only impacts negatively on residential communities
