The Colombian conflict: a description of a mental health program in the Department of Tolima.
Colombia has been seriously affected by an internal armed conflict for more than 40 years affecting mainly the civilian population, who is forced to displace, suffers kidnapping, extortion, threats and assassinations. Between 2005 and 2008, Médecins Sans Frontières-France provided psychological care and treatment in the region of Tolima, a strategic place in the armed conflict. The mental health program was based on a short-term multi-faceted treatment developed according to the psychological and psychosomatic needs of the population. Here we describe the population attending during 2005-2008, in both urban and rural settings, as well as the psychological treatment provided during this period and its outcomes.We observed differences between the urban and rural settings in the traumatic events reported, the clinical expression of the disorders, the disorders diagnosed, and their severity. Although the duration of the treatment was limited due to security reasons and access difficulties, patient condition at last visit improved in most of the patients. These descriptive results suggest that further studies should be conducted to examine the role of short-term psychotherapy, adapted specifically to the context, can be a useful tool to provide psychological care to population affected by an armed conflict
Constitutive Models for Tumour Classification
The aim of this paper is to formulate new mathematical models that will be able to differentiate not only between normal and abnormal tissues, but, more importantly, between benign and malignant tumours. We present preliminary results of a tri-phasic model and numerical simulations of the effect of cellular adhesion forces on the mechanical properties of biological tissues.
We pursued the following three approaches:
(i) the simulation of the time-harmonic linear elastic models to examine coarse scale effects and adhesion properties,
(ii) the investigation of a tri-phasic model, with the intent of upscaling this model to determine effects of electro-mechanical coupling between cells,
and (iii) the upscaling of a simple cell model as a framework for studying interface conditions at malignant cells.
Each of these approaches has opened exciting new directions of research that we plan to study in the future
An investigation into the perspectives of providers and learners on MOOC accessibility
An effective open eLearning environment should consider the target learner’s abilities, learning goals, where learning takes place, and which specific device(s) the learner uses. MOOC platforms struggle to take these factors into account and typically are not accessible, inhibiting access to environments that are intended to be open to all. A series of research initiatives are described that are intended to benefit MOOC providers in achieving greater accessibility and disabled learners to improve their lifelong learning and re-skilling. In this paper, we first outline the rationale, the research questions, and the methodology. The research approach includes interviews, online surveys and a MOOC accessibility audit; we also include factors such the risk management of the research programme and ethical considerations when conducting research with vulnerable learners. Preliminary results are presented from interviews with providers and experts and from analysis of surveys of learners. Finally, we outline the future research opportunities. AltAltp: Online Parallelization of Plans with Heuristic State Search
Despite their near dominance, heuristic state search planners still lag
behind disjunctive planners in the generation of parallel plans in classical
planning. The reason is that directly searching for parallel solutions in state
space planners would require the planners to branch on all possible subsets of
parallel actions, thus increasing the branching factor exponentially. We
present a variant of our heuristic state search planner AltAlt, called AltAltp
which generates parallel plans by using greedy online parallelization of
partial plans. The greedy approach is significantly informed by the use of
novel distance heuristics that AltAltp derives from a graphplan-style planning
graph for the problem. While this approach is not guaranteed to provide optimal
parallel plans, empirical results show that AltAltp is capable of generating
good quality parallel plans at a fraction of the cost incurred by the
disjunctive planners
