A Catalog of GALEX Ultraviolet Emission from Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars
We have performed a comprehensive study of the UV emission detected from AGB
stars by the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX). Of the 468 AGB stars in our
sample, 316 were observed by GALEX. In the NUV bandpass (z A), 179 AGB stars were detected and 137 were not detected. Only 38
AGB stars were detected in the FUV bandpass ( A).
We find that NUV emission is correlated with optical to near infrared emission
leading to higher detection fractions among the brightest, hence closest, AGB
stars. Comparing the AGB time-variable visible phased light curves to
corresponding GALEX NUV phased light curves we find evidence that for some AGB
stars the NUV emission varies in phase with the visible light curves. We also
find evidence that the NUV emission, and possibly, the FUV emission are
anti-correlated with the circumstellar envelope density. These results suggest
that the origin of the GALEX-detected UV emission is an inherent characteristic
of the AGB stars that can most likely be traced to a combination of
photospheric and chromospheric emission. In most cases, UV detections of AGB
stars are not likely to be indicative of the presence of binary companions.Comment: Accepted by ApJ; go spurs go
Renormalization Group and Grand Unification with 331 Models
By making a renormalization group analysis we explore the possibility of
having a 331 model as the only intermediate gauge group between the standard
model and the scale of unification of the three coupling constants. We shall
assume that there is no necessarily a group of grand unification at the scale
of convergence of the couplings. With this scenario, different 331 models and
their corresponding supersymmetric versions are considered, and we find the
versions that allow the symmetry breaking described above. Besides, the allowed
interval for the 331 symmetry breaking scale, and the behavior of the running
coupling constants are obtained. It worths saying that some of the
supersymmetric scenarios could be natural frameworks for split supersymmetry.
Finally, we look for possible 331 models with a simple group at the grand
unification scale, that could fit the symmetry breaking scheme described above.Comment: 18 pages. 3 figures. Some results reinterpreted, a new section and

Kontsevich-Zorich monodromy groups of translation covers of some platonic solids
We compute the Zariski closure of the Kontsevich-Zorich monodromy groups
arising from certain square tiled surfaces that are geometrically motivated.
Specifically we consider three surfaces that emerge as translation covers of
platonic solids and quotients of infinite polyhedra, and show that the Zariski
closure of the monodromy group arising from each surface is equal to a power of
.
We prove our results by finding generators for the monodromy groups, using a
theorem of Matheus-Yoccoz-Zmiaikou that provides constraints on the Zariski
closure of the groups (to obtain an "upper bound"), and analyzing the dimension
of the Lie algebra of the Zariski closure of the group (to obtain a "lower
bound").
Moreover, combining our analysis with the Eskin-Kontsevich-Zorich formula, we
also compute the Lyapunov spectrum of the Kontsevich-Zorich cocycle for said
square-tiled surfaces.Comment: 33 pages, 15 figures. v2: Computed the Lyapunov spectrum of the

In the valleys of Norpatagonia during different times of the year, it is observed that the growth of horticultural crops is affected by climatic conditions. The normal development of plants can be impaired by the presence of strong winds and frosts of varied intensity. The objective of this final work was to carry out a field trial, where three varieties of lettuce were evaluated, grown semi-forced from the construction of microtunnels, monitoring their growth and determining their Yields. In those plots where the coverage with polyethylene LDT was used was decisive to obtain the best average weights of the lettuce plants, then the lettuces protected with Crystal polyethylene were located. While the lowest yields corresponded to crops developed on uncovered plots. From the results obtained can be considered that microtunnels are technological innovations, which must be incorporated when it is intended to obtain quality vegetables, and when the climatic conditions of the valleys of northern Patagonia are not favorable.EEA Alto ValleFil: Sánchez, Jorge Rodolfo. Stabilization of Underactuated Systems of Degree One via Neural Interconnection and Damping Assignment Passivity Based Control
In this work, we show the potential of the universal approximation property of neural networks in the design of interconnection and damping assignment passivity-based controllers (IDA-PBC) for stabilizing nonlinear underactuated mechanical systems of degree one. Towards this end, we reformulate the IDA-PBC design methodology as a neural supervised learning problem that approximates the solution of the partial differential matching equations, which fulfills the equilibrium assignment and stability conditions. The output of the neural learning process has clear physical and control-theoretic interpretations in terms of energy, passivity and Lyapunov stability. The proposed approach is numerically evaluated in two well-known underactuated systems: the inverted pendulum on a cart and inertial wheel pendulum, whose analytic IDA-PBC solutions are non-trivial to obtain
Total Energy Shaping with Neural Interconnection and Damping Assignment - Passivity Based Control
In this work we exploit the universal approximation property of Neural
Networks (NNs) to design interconnection and damping assignment (IDA)
passivity-based control (PBC) schemes for fully-actuated mechanical systems in
the port-Hamiltonian (pH) framework. To that end, we transform the IDA-PBC
method into a supervised learning problem that solves the partial differential
matching equations, and fulfills equilibrium assignment and Lyapunov stability
conditions. A main consequence of this, is that the output of the learning
algorithm has a clear control-theoretic interpretation in terms of passivity
and Lyapunov stability. The proposed control design methodology is validated
for mechanical systems of one and two degrees-of-freedom via numerical
simulations.Comment: Accepted in 4th Annual Learning for Dynamics and Control (L4DC)
