On-demand reversible switching of the emission mode of individual semiconductor quantum emitters using plasmonic metasurfaces
The field of quantum technology has been rapidly expanding in the past
decades, yielding numerous applications as quantum information, quantum
communication and quantum cybersecurity. The central building block for these
applications is a quantum emitter (QE), a controllable source of single photons
or photon pairs. Semiconductor QEs such as perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs) and
semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have been demonstrated to be a promising
material for pure single-photon emission, and their hybrids with plasmonic
nanocavities may serve as sources of photon pairs. Here we have designed a
system in which individual quantum emitters and their ensembles can be traced
before, during, and after the interaction with the external plasmonic
metasurface in controllable way. Upon coupling the external plasmonic
metasurface to the array of QEs, the individual QEs switch from single-photon
to photon-pair emission mode. Remarkably, this method does not affect the
chemical structure and composition of the QEs, allowing them to return to their
initial state after decoupling from the plasmonic metasurface. By employing
this approach, we have successfully demonstrated the reversible switching of
the ensemble of individual semiconductor QEs between single-photon and photon
pair emission modes. This significantly broadens the potential applications of
semiconductor QEs in quantum technologies
Inhibition of Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Limits Mitochondrial Damage and Preserves Function Following Ischemic Injury
Aims: Myocardial ischemia can result in marked mitochondrial damage leading to cardiac dysfunction, as such identifying novel mechanisms to limit mitochondrial injury is important. This study investigated the hypothesis that inhibiting soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH), responsible for converting epoxyeicosatrienoic acids to dihydroxyeicosatrienoic acids protects mitochondrial from injury caused by myocardial infarction. Methods: sEH null and WT littermate mice were subjected to surgical occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) artery or sham operation. A parallel group of WT mice received an sEH inhibitor, trans-4-[4-(3-adamantan-1-y1-ureido)-cyclohexyloxy]-benzoic acid (tAUCB; 10 mg/L) or vehicle in the drinking water 4 days prior and 7 days post-MI. Cardiac function was assessed by echocardiography prior- and 7-days post-surgery. Heart tissues were dissected into infarct, peri-, and non-infarct regions to assess ultrastructure by electron microscopy. Complexes I, II, IV, citrate synthase, PI3K activities, and mitochondrial respiration were assessed in non-infarct regions. Isolated working hearts were used to measure the rates of glucose and palmitate oxidation. Results: Echocardiography revealed that tAUCB treatment or sEH deficiency significantly improved systolic and diastolic function post-MI compared to controls. Reduced infarct expansion and less adverse cardiac remodeling were observed in tAUCB-treated and sEH null groups. EM data demonstrated mitochondrial ultrastructure damage occurred in infarct and peri-infarct regions but not in non-infarct regions. Inhibition of sEH resulted in significant improvements in mitochondrial respiration, ATP content, mitochondrial enzymatic activities and restored insulin sensitivity and PI3K activity. Conclusion: Inhibition or genetic deletion of sEH protects against long-term ischemia by preserving cardiac function and maintaining mitochondrial efficiency
Surface ligands affect photoinduced modulation of the quantum dots optical performance
ABSTRACT Changes of optical properties of the solutions of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) covered with the trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO) ligands under the pulsed ultraviolet (UV) laser irradiation are observed. The fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of QDs decreases by more than an order of magnitude when the radiation dose approaches 2 Ă 10 -15 J per particle. This process is accompanied by a blue shift of both fluorescence and the first excitonic absorption peaks. The fluorescence quenching becomes less pronounced when the overall TOPO content in the solution is increased. When ТĐĐ Đ ligands are replaced with n-hexadecylamine (HDA), QY and spectral properties are not changed at the same irradiation conditions. We assume that the above changes of the optical properties are associated with photooxidation of TOPO ligands by excited QD. Such process is less probable for the HDA ligand due to its different energy structure
Deficiency of Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Protects Cardiac Function Impaired by LPS-Induced Acute Inflammation
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a bacterial wall endotoxin producing many pathophysiological conditions including myocardial inflammation leading to cardiotoxicity. Linoleic acid (18:2n6, LA) is an essential n-6 PUFA which is converted to arachidonic acid (20:4n6, AA) by desaturation and elongation via enzyme systems within the body. Biological transformation of PUFA through CYP-mediated hydroxylation, epoxidation, and allylic oxidation produces lipid mediators, which may be subsequently hydrolyzed to corresponding diol metabolites by soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH). In the current study, we investigate whether inhibition of sEH, which alters the PUFA metabolite profile, can influence LPS induced cardiotoxicity and mitochondrial function. Our data demonstrate that deletion of soluble epoxide hydrolase provides protective effects against LPS-induced cardiotoxicity by maintaining mitochondrial function. There was a marked alteration in the cardiac metabolite profile with notable increases in sEH-derived vicinal diols, 9,10- and 12,13-dihydroxyoctadecenoic acid (DiHOME) in WT hearts following LPS administration, which was absent in sEH null mice. We found that DiHOMEs triggered pronounced mitochondrial structural abnormalities, which also contributed to the development of extensive mitochondrial dysfunction in cardiac cells. Accumulation of DiHOMEs may represent an intermediate mechanism through which LPS-induced acute inflammation triggers deleterious alterations in the myocardium in vivo and cardiac cells in vitro. This study reveals novel research exploring the contribution of DiHOMEs in the progression of adverse inflammatory responses toward cardiac function in vitro and in vivo

Effect of Spectral Overlap and Separation Distance on Exciton and Biexciton Quantum Yields and Radiative and Nonradiative Recombination Rates in Quantum Dots Near Plasmon Nanoparticles
Efficient biexciton (BX) photoluminescence (PL) from quantum dots (QDs) paves the way to the generation of entangled photons and related applications. However, the quantum yield (QY) of BX PL is much lower than that for single excitons (EX) due to efficient Auger-like recombination. In the vicinity of plasmon nanoparticles, the recombination rates of EX and BX may be affected by the Purcell effect, fluorescence quenching, and the excitation rate enhancement. Here, the effect of the plasmon resonance spectral position on the EX and BX PL is experimentally studied in two cases: when the plasmon band overlaps with the excitation wavelength and when it coincides with the QDs PL band. In the first case, the EX and BX excitation efficiencies are significantly increased but the EX QY reduced. As a result, the BX-to-EX QY ratio is higher than 1 at plasmonâexciton systems separations shorter than 40 nm. In the second case, the radiative recombination rates are enhanced by several orders of magnitude, which led to an increase in BX QY over distances of up to 90 nm. Finally, these two effects are obtained in the same hybrid structure, with the resultant increase in both excitation efficiency and QY of BX PL.They also acknowledge the ďŹnancial support from theMinistry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation (Grant Number: 14.Y26.31.0011) . Design Calculation of Drill-Injection Piles with Controlled Broadening and Silty-Clayed Soil Foundation Basic Interaction Parameters
The paper describes a new method of drill-injection pile installation formed by the sleeve technology with solution injection using the âfracturingâ mode and the controlled broadening at the pile end. This method is aimed at high-quality and effective compaction of the soil under the strip foundation of the reconstructed building. Analyzed are the results of the in-situ tests intended to interaction of drill-injection piles manufactured by the sleeve technology and single and repeated solution injections using the âfracturingâ mode and the controlled broadening at the pile end. The radius of the neighboring compacted soil massif zone was determined. The geometric parameters of the pile shaft broadening, and fractures were identified. The algorithm for calculating the basic parameters of the proposed piles was developed in order to forecast their interaction with a silty-clayed soil foundation under static loading. A comparison with classical analytical solutions after soil mechanics, theory of elasticity and plasticity was made
