The use of English Conversation Journal (ECJ) to improve students’ speaking performance in business English communication

This experimental research was intended to make an analysis and assessment toward the use of English Conversation Journal (ECJ) whether it is effective to improve students’ speaking performance in Business English Communication or not. The objectives of this study were to find out whether there are any significant differences between students who are taught by using ECJ and without ECJ in terms of students’ speaking performance in Business English Communication. The Researcher employed quantitative research with two groups consisting of pre-test and post-test groups through random sampling where Office Management students (OM-35) as control class and (OM-36) as experimental class. The result revealed that the mean difference is 11.75. It showed that the average result of students’ deviation score in Control and Experiment groups was 69.50-81.25=-11.75. In other words, there are significant differences in students’ Speaking Performance in Business English Communication between those who were taught by using English Conversation Journal (ECJ) and those who were not. Therefore, improving student’s speaking performance in Business English Communication by using English Conversation Journal (ECJ) can be an alternative in teaching and learning process

THE ROLE OF INSTRUMENTAL MOTIVATION AMONG EFL STUDENTS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING PROCESS

The aim of this study was to find out the role of instrumental motivation in the English learning process of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students. Motivation can be described as a process to influence someone or many people to do the desired work, in accordance with certain goals set in advance.  For EFL student, motivation was required to achieve success in the process of learning English. Based on the previous study, kind of motivation, called Instrumental motivation, has an important role in English learning process. The participants of the study were 10 EFL students; 5 students were from post-graduate program of English Department of Syiah Kuala University and 5 students were from undergraduate program of English Department of UIN Ar-Raniry. This qualitative study applied interview to gather data. The result of the study revealed that the participants have a strong instrumental motivation involved in their English learning process. Considering the results of this study, everyone, whether parents and teachers need to motivate their children and their EFL students by motivating them instrumentally in the process of learning and teaching English

Podcast With Peer Assisted Learning: Does It Really Affect Students’ Listening Comprehension Skills?

Integrating Podcasts with Peer-Assisted Learning into English classes might be able to improve the listening abilities of EFL students. This system is ideal for senior high school students, who mostly still experience difficulties with listening comprehension, to be more enthusiastic in the learning process. This research aimed at determining the effect of using Podcast with Peer-Assisted Learning on students’ listening comprehension, discovering the possible difference between male and female students in achieving better results in learning listening comprehension and figuring out their motivation in learning with this treatment

LANGUAGE STYLES USED IN EDUCATIONAL ADVERTISEMENT OF THE JAKARTA POST NEWSPAPER

The educational advertisements are displayed in various media: printed or electronic media. The advertisements are set in many types, forms, and styles of the language used to persuade customers. However, they have not been clearly investigated yet until there are no certain determinates to these cases, especially, the language styles use. This research aims to describe the styles of language in the educational advertisement of The Jakarta Post newspaper published from May 2018 to August 2019. The theory used in this study was put forward by Moriarty, Mitchell, and Wells (2012). This research used a descriptive qualitative method. The results showed that there were three language styles from twenty-four advertisements that appeared in the educational advertisement on The Jakarta Post newspaper. These were hard-sell style, straightforward style, and the combination of hard-sell and straightforward. However, the most dominant language style appearing in the educational advertisement of The Jakarta Post newspaper in May 2018 to August 2019 edition was a hard-sell style because the language style of this advertisement provided detailed information in which it is very often used in displayed advertisements

Students’ perception toward English subject and their learning outcome

This research aims to find out students' perception of the English subject and provides an overview of the students learning outcome at SMA Negeri 1 Jangka Buya, Pidie Jaya. The instruments used in this research are questionnaires, interview guides, and documentation. Students' perceptions are classified into three categories: education, economy, and social interaction, and one group of negative question models support the other three. The student's perception of English is dominant in education. Generally, the students of SMAN 1 Jangka Buya come from dayah (Islamic school). They believe that mastering English can help them promote Islamic teachings more effectively. The negative question is the second dominant result; most students admit that language is a medium to build up connection and communication verbally or through written text. Meanwhile, in the economy category, students believe that we can increase income with English language skills. It is also shown that students who have good grades in English also have a high perception of certain categories. In comparison, students who have low perception get low learning outcomes on the English subject. So that, the students' perception and background must be hardly noticed by the teacher in planning a good teaching and learning process

MACROSTRUCTURE OF CLASSROOM SPOKEN DISCOURSES PRODUCED BY ENGLISH TEACHERS

For English teaching practice, it is important to deliberate productive talks that spur students’ comprehension, creativity, and problem solving ability. This research aimed at finding out the spoken discourse based on six phases of macrostructure in English classrooms. In this study, the writers employed observation guide sheets to collect the data and it was employed to 2 English teachers in Aceh Besar. The guide was developed based on Van Dijk (1980) on macrostructure in discourse society. The theory was adopted and adjusted based on the classroom spoken discourse. The data were analyzed using the interactive model analysis by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The steps were data condensation, data display, and data verification by using a percentage formula. The findings indicate that two teachers conducted the process of teaching and learning activities according to the lesson plans that they had previously designed. Even though both of them had different teaching strategies, but the lesson plans had a complete structure with 6 steps in macro-phases

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SUMMARIZING ACTIVITY BY USING SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO (SWBS) STRATEGY TO IMPROVE STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION

The aim of this research is to find out if there is a significant difference between the students who were taught through summarizing activity using somebody wanted but so (SWBS) strategy than those who were not taught through the strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension in terms of finding out the main idea, specific information, word meaning, reference, and inference. This study employed a true experimental design in which there were two classes as the samples classified into experimental and control classes. The classes were chosen by using cluster random sampling and each class consisted of 36 students. In collecting the data, pre-test and post-test were used and the data were analyzed by using SPSS version 21. The result of the study found the post-test mean score at the experimental class is 84.78, and the post-test mean score at the control class is 73.33. Furthermore, the result of the z-score between both experimental and control classes is 6.05 at the level significance of 5% (0.05). Thus, it indicates that there is a significant difference between the students who were taught through SWBS strategy than those who were not taught through this strategy to improve the students’ reading comprehension

Integrating Target Language Culture Into Teaching-Learning EFL

An important aspect of learning a language is to learn the culture of the language. The actual relationship between the two cannot be separated, because a language serves a particular culture and through the language the cultural values of a people are reflected. Therefore, the role of English teachers is very important in the teaching of language and culture that should always be linked together in the teaching-learning of language. The purpose of this study was to discover the perceptions of EFL teachers on integrating teaching-learning about English culture into EFL classrooms and to investigate whether or not the EFL teachers supported acquisition of cross-cultural understanding by their students. To get their results, the researchers collected data from observations in three English classrooms to look at the integration of teaching-learning about culture into the EFL teaching-learning processes. After the observations, the researchers interviewed the three teachers about the integration of culture into the EFL classroom. Then the researchers analyzed, condensed and displayed the data and drew conclusions. The results of this study showed that the EFL teachers were aware of the importance of studying the English culture but one of them did not yet focus on integrating English culture into teaching-learning EFL. This was  due to several factors such as the lack of English language knowledge of the teacher and insufficient time for teaching theory and language structures

Using Herringbone Graphic Organizer Strategy to Enhance Students’ Reading Comprehension

This research aims at investigating the use of Herringbone Graphic Organizer Strategy (HGO) to enhance students’ reading comprehension and their responses toward the application of HGO. The true experimental design was used in this research in which the population involved four classes at Private Senior High School of SukmaBangsaLhokseumawe, consisting of 86 first grade students, while two classes were selected by using cluster random sampling as samples, namely X/Volcano as an experimental class, consisting of 18 students and X/Hargowilis as a control class, consisting of 20 students. The experimental class was taught by using HGO, whereas the control class was taught by using conventional strategy. The instruments used for data collection were tests and questionnaires. The tests were given for both the experimental and control class but the questionnaire was only distributed for experimental class students. The data obtained from the tests were analyzed by using the SPSS (statistical package for the social science) version 23 and the questionnaire was analyzed by using Likert scale. The analyses results indicated that HGO is able to enhance students' reading comprehension proven by the significance value of the t-test on the identifying main idea (p = 0.003), specific detail (0,001), and inference aspect (0.001). Therefore, since the probability is Sig. 0.05, then H0 is rejected. In addition, the students responded positively (79.16%) to the application of HGO. It can be concluded that HGO could enhance reading comprehension and develop the positive responses of the students

AN INVESTIGATION OF WORD FORMATION PROCESSES OF INDONESIAN SLANG WORDS

Purpose of the study: The purpose of this study is to find out the slang word-formation processes uttered by Kasino, the main character in the movie. Slang also underwent some processes in general word-formation. Methodology: The research method of this study was descriptive qualitative with content analysis. Content analysis is one of the types of qualitative research that focuses on analyzing recorded data and interpreting recorded material to learn human behavior. The data for this qualitative research were collected from the utterances produced by Kasino which contain slang words. They were obtained by watching the movie and transcribing the movie script. To analyze the processes of slang word-formation, this study consulted Mattiello’s (2008) theory. Main Findings: From the analysis, this study found 11 slangs of compounding, 16 slang of prefixation, 19 slang of suffixation, 9 slang of conversion, 9 slang of reduplicative, 2 slangs of acronym and initialism, 6 slangs of blending, 13 slangs of clipping, 98 slangs of variation, and 2 slangs of word manufactured and fanciful formation from the total of 186 data. Application of this study: The finding of this research contributes theoretically and practically for the sociolinguistic and morphology area of slang words. Theoretically, this research is expected to enrich the understanding of sociolinguistic and morphology studies, especially in slang word-formation. Practically, this research is expected to give a relevant answer into the gap based on the lack of slang word and the slang word-formation existed in Indonesian comedy movies. Novelty/Originality of this study: The different types of word-formation processes found in this research can assist readers and other researchers on the Indonesian slang word-formation processes
