Providing Feedback Following Leadership Walkrounds is Associated with Better Patient Safety Culture, Higher Employee Engagement and Lower Burnout
Background There is a poorly understood relationship between Leadership WalkRounds (WR) and domains such as safety culture, employee engagement, burnout and work-life balance. Methods This cross-sectional survey study evaluated associations between receiving feedback about actions taken as a result of WR and healthcare worker assessments of patient safety culture, employee engagement, burnout and work-life balance, across 829 work settings. Results 16โ797 of 23โ853 administered surveys were returned (70.4%). 5497 (32.7% of total) reported that they had participated in WR, and 4074 (24.3%) reported that they participated in WR with feedback. Work settings reporting more WR with feedback had substantially higher safety culture domain scores (first vs fourth quartile Cohenโs d range: 0.34โ0.84; % increase range: 15โ27) and significantly higher engagement scores for four of its six domains (first vs fourth quartile Cohenโs d range: 0.02โ0.76; % increase range: 0.48โ0.70). Conclusion This WR study of patient safety and organisational outcomes tested relationships with a comprehensive set of safety culture and engagement metrics in the largest sample of hospitals and respondents to date. Beyond measuring simply whether WRs occur, we examine WR with feedback, as WR being done well. We suggest that when WRs are conducted, acted on, and the results are fed back to those involved, the work setting is a better place to deliver and receive care as assessed across a broad range of metrics, including teamwork, safety, leadership, growth opportunities, participation in decision-making and the emotional exhaustion component of burnout. Whether WR with feedback is a manifestation of better norms, or a cause of these norms, is unknown, but the link is demonstrably potent
Measurements of Gamow-Teller Strength for Double-Beta Decaying Nuclei Via the (p,n) Reaction at 134 MeV

Electron Capture Strength for {60,62}Ni and {58,60,62,64}Ni(p,n){58,60,62,64}Cu reactions at 134.3 MeV
Background: The strength of electron capture for medium mass nuclei has a
significant effect on the evolution of supernovae. There is insufficient
knowledge of these strengths and very little data for important radioactive
nuclei. Purpose: Determine whether it is feasible to obtain EC strength from
studies of T_o+1 excitations in (p,n) reactions, and whether this might yield
information for radioactive nuclei. Methods: Cross sections for the
{58,60,62,64}Ni(p,n){58,60,62,64}Cu reactions were measured over the angular
range of 0.3 deg to 11.6 deg at 134.3 MeV using the IUCF neutron time-of-flight
facility. esults: The T_o+1 excitations in {60,62}Ni were identified by
comparison with inelastic proton scattering spectra, their B(GT) were
extracted, and the corresponding electron capture rates in supernovae were
calculated. Data from the TRIUMF (n,p) experiments at 198 MeV were reanalyzed;
the electron capture rates for the reanalyzed data are in moderately good
agreement with the higher resolution (p,n) results, but differ in detail. The
possibility of future measurements with radioactive nuclei was considered.
Conclusions: It is possible to determine electron capturestrength from (p,n)
experiments. This approach may make it possible to obtain electron capture
strength for radioactive nuclei by studying (p,n) reactions in inverse

Measuring geometric phases of scattering states in nanoscale electronic devices
We show how a new quantum property, a geometric phase, associated with
scattering states can be exhibited in nanoscale electronic devices. We propose
an experiment to use interference to directly measure the effect of the new
geometric phase. The setup involves a double path interferometer, adapted from
that used to measure the phase evolution of electrons as they traverse a
quantum dot (QD). Gate voltages on the QD could be varied cyclically and
adiabatically, in a manner similar to that used to observe quantum adiabatic
charge pumping. The interference due to the geometric phase results in
oscillations in the current collected in the drain when a small bias across the
device is applied. We illustrate the effect with examples of geometric phases
resulting from both Abelian and non-Abelian gauge potentials.Comment: Six pages two figure
The physical constraints on a new LoBAL QSO at z=4.82
Very few low-ionization broad absorption line (LoBAL) QSOs have been found at
high redshifts to date. One high-redshift LoBAL QSO, J0122+1216, was recently
discovered at the Lijiang 2.4-m Telescope with an initial redshift
determination of 4.76. Aiming to investigate its physical properties, we
carried out follow-up observations in the optical and near-IR spectroscopy.
Near-IR spectra from UKIRT and P200 confirms that it is a LoBAL, with a new
redshift determination of based on the \mgii~ emission-line. The
new \mgii~ redshift determination reveals strong blueshifts and asymmetry of
the high-ionization emission lines. We estimated a black hole mass of and Eddington ratio of according to the
empirical \mgii-based single-epoch relation and bolometric correction factor.
It is possible that strong outflows are the result of an extreme quasar
environment driven by the high Eddington ratio. A lower limit on the outflowing
kinetic power () was derived from both emission and absorption
lines, indicating these outflows play a significant role in the feedback
process to regulate the growth of its black hole as well as host galaxy

A DNA-barcode biodiversity standard analysis method (DNA-BSAM) reveals a large variance in the effect of a range of biological, chemical and physical soil management interventions at different sites, but location is one of the most important aspects determining the nature of agricultural soil microbiology
There are significant knowledge gaps in our understanding of how to sustainably manage agricultural soils to preserve soil biodiversity. Here we evaluate and quantify the effects of agricultural management and location on soil microbiology using nine field trials that have consistently applied different soil management practices in the United Kingdom using DNA barcode sequence data. We tested the basic hypothesis that various agricultural management interventions have a significant and greater effect on soil bacterial and fungal diversity than geographic location. The analyses of soil microbial DNA sequence data to date has lacked standardisation which prevents meaningful comparisons across sites and studies. Therefore, to analyse these data and crucially compare and quantify the size of any effects on soil bacterial and fungal biodiversity between sites, we developed and employed a post-sequencing DNA-barcode biodiversity standard analysis method (DNA-BSAM). The DNA-BSAM comprises a series of standardised bioinformatic steps for processing sequences but more importantly defines a standardised set of ecological indices and statistical tests. Use of the DNA-BSAM reveals the hypothesis was not strongly supported, and this was primarily because: 1) there was a large variance in the effects of various management interventions at different sites, and 2) that location had an equivalent or greater effect size than most management interventions for most metrics. Some dispersed sites imposed the same organic amendments interventions but showed different responses, and this combined with observations of strong differences in soil microbiomes by location tentatively suggests that any effect of management may be contingent on location. This means it could be unreliable to extrapolate the findings of individual trials to others. The widespread use of a standard approach will allow meaningful cross-comparisons between soil microbiome studies and thus a substantial evidence-base of the effects of land-use on soil microbiology to accumulate and inform soil management decisions.Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB); British Beet Research Organisation (BBRO
Why test study protocol: a UK-wide audit using the primary care academic collaborative to explore the reasons for primary care testing

The number of blood tests done in primary care has been increasing over the last 20 years. Some
estimates suggest that up to a quarter of these tests may not have been needed. This could lead to a
cascade effect of further investigations, appointments, or referrals, as well as anxiety for patients,
increased workload and costs to the health service. To better understand the impact and sequelae of
blood tests on patients, we need to know why blood tests are requested and what is done with the
results.
Aims
To explore who orders blood tests and why, and how test results are actioned in primary care.
Design & Setting
Retrospective audit of electronic health records in general practices across the UK.
Method
The Primary care Academic CollaboraTive (PACT), a UK-wide network of primary care health
professionals, will be utilised to collect data from individual practices. PACT members will be asked
to review the electronic health records of 50 patients who had recent blood tests in their practice,
and manually extract anonymised data on who requested the test, the indication, the result, and
subsequent actions. Data will also be collected from PACT members to assess the feasibility of the
collaborative model.
Conclusion
PACT offers a unique opportunity to extract clinical data which cannot otherwise be obtained.
Understanding the indications for tests will help identify priority areas for research to optimise

Cisplatin-induced emesis: systematic review and meta-analysis of the ferret model and the effects of 5-HT3 receptor antagonists
PURPOSE: The ferret cisplatin emesis model has been used for ~30ย years and enabled identification of clinically used anti-emetics. We provide an objective assessment of this model including efficacy of 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists to assess its translational validity. METHODS: A systematic review identified available evidence and was used to perform meta-analyses. RESULTS: Of 182 potentially relevant publications, 115 reported cisplatin-induced emesis in ferrets and 68 were included in the analysis. The majority (nย =ย 53) used a 10ย mgย kg(โ1) dose to induce acute emesis, which peaked after 2ย h. More recent studies (nย =ย 11) also used 5ย mgย kg(โ1), which induced a biphasic response peaking at 12ย h and 48ย h. Overall, 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists reduced cisplatin (5ย mgย kg(โ1)) emesis by 68% (45โ91%) during the acute phase (day 1) and by 67% (48โ86%) and 53% (38โ68%, all Pย <ย 0.001), during the delayed phase (days 2, 3). In an analysis focused on the acute phase, the efficacy of ondansetron was dependent on the dosage and observation period but not on the dose of cisplatin. CONCLUSION: Our analysis enabled novel findings to be extracted from the literature including factors which may impact on the applicability of preclinical results to humans. It reveals that the efficacy of ondansetron is similar against low and high doses of cisplatin. Additionally, we showed that 5-HT(3) receptor antagonists have a similar efficacy during acute and delayed emesis, which provides a novel insight into the pharmacology of delayed emesis in the ferret
