The effect of visual deficiency on the reproduction of arm. movement ilinear and angulars was studied on 24 children. Generally the reproduction is reasonably good for the two types of movement ; the percentages, however, draw neaver to those younger population of sighted children studied in previous experiments ; a better reproduction is noted for orthogonal rather than oblique movements ; the possibility of reproduction of angles shows the usefulness of kinesthesia, indépendant of vision, for this type of 2-dimensional realization.
Absence of vision does not radically or generally change the use of kinesthetic indices ; the changes encountered seem, rather, to be able to the interpreted in terms of poor motor development and incapacity for adaptation in certain children.
Summary
Within a more general study concerning the role of kinaesthetic cues in the correct reproduction of movements, we asked 4 and 5-years old children to reproduce, with closed eyes, rectilinear movements in different orientations. We were trying to define in what conditions two characteristics of stimulus, form and orientation, may be taken into account. The rectilinear aspect is correctly reproduced by the younger subjects, so much better as the concerned directions are orthogonal and not obliques. On the other hand, movements of the 4 years old are very badly situated in space ; they are mode in the child's preferred direction, corresponding with vertical and lateral dominance. Between 4 and 5 years of age, the amelioration consists in a differenciation of orientations in a space becoming independant of the body of the subject.Résumé
Morning recall of verbal material depends on prior sleep organization. Behavioural Brain Research 112
Abstract Despite the evidence that sleep may facilitate memory, controversial findings concern the role of sleep states (NREM, REM). We put forward the hypothesis that sleep organization, i.e. the regular occurrence of NREM -REM cycles, more than sleep states per se, may be crucial for the retention of verbal material presented before sleep. An experiment was performed in which recall of verbal material was requested of young subjects after three different kinds of night sleep: undisturbed sleep, fragmented sleep without sleep cycles disorganization, and fragmented sleep interrupted with sleep disorganization. Morning recall of verbal material was impaired after the night with disturbed sleep cycles, whereas it was not after the night with preserved sleep cycles; the amount of REM was similar in both cases. We conclude that the recall of verbal material is greatly affected by sleep cycle disorganization
