Sgr A* ``Visual Binaries'': A Direct Measurement of the Galactocentric Distance
We present a new geometrical method for measuring the distance to the
Galactic center (R_0) by solving for the Keplerian orbit of individual stars
bound to the black hole associated with the Sgr A* from radial velocity and
proper motion measurements. We identify three stars to which the method may be
applied, and show that 1-5 % accuracy of R_0 can be expected after 15 years of
observing, and 0.5-2 % after 30 years of observing, depending on what the
orbital parameters of these three stars turn out to be. Combining the
measurements of the three stars with favorable orbital parameters leads to even
more precise values. In the example that we present, such combined solution
yields 4 % accuracy already by the year 2002. All these estimates assume that
annual position measurements will continue to be made with the 2 mas precision
recently reported by Ghez et al. The precision of the distance measurement is
relatively insensitive to the radial velocity errors, provided that the latter
are less than 50 km/s. Besides potentially giving an estimate of R_0 that is
better than any currently in use, the greatest advantage of this method is that

CAUSALITY AND DYNAMICS OF ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND OUTPUT: EVIDENCE FROM NON-OECD ASIAN COUNTRIES
This article examines the short-run and long-run causal relationship between energy consumption and output in six non-OECD Asian developing countries. Standard time series econometrics is used for this purpose. Based on cointegration and vector error correction modeling, the empirical result shows a bi-directional causality between energy consumption and income in Malaysia, while a unidirectional causality from output to energy consumption in China and Thailand and energy consumption to output in India and Pakistan. Bangladesh remains as an energy neutral economy confirming the fact that it is one of the lowest energy consuming countries in Asia. Both the generalized variance decompositions and the impulse response functions confirm the direction of causality in these countries. These findings have important policy implications for concerned countries. Countries like China and Thailand may contribute to the fight against global warming directly implementing energy conservation measures whereas India and Pakistan may focus on technological developments and mitigation policies. Dynamics of O(N) Model in a Strong Magnetic Background Field as a Modified Noncommutative Field Theory
In the presence of a strong magnetic field, the effective action of a
composite scalar field in an scalar O(N) model is derived using two different
methods. First, in the framework of worldline formalism, the 1PI n-point vertex
function for the composites is determined in the limit of strong magnetic
field. Then, the n-point effective action of the composites is calculated in
the regime of lowest Landau level dominance. It is shown that in the limit of
strong magnetic field, the results coincide and an effective field theory
arises which is comparable with the conventional noncommutative field theory.
In contrast to the ordinary case, however, the UV/IR mixing is absent in this
