THE INVESTIGATION OF THE ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION TREND IN LEARNING ENGLISH

Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menggambarkan kecenderungan motivasi mahasiswa-mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris di kelas. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan menggunakan metode deskripsi. Peneliti menggunakan daftar pertanyaan dan wawancara sebagai alat-alat pengumpul data. Data penelitian ini diambil dari mahasiswa-mahasiswa Program Studi Bahasa Inggris semester dua, empat dan enam tahun 2011/2012.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa-mahasiswa semester dua, empat dan enam mempunyai pola motivasi yang kurang lebih sama. Terdapat juga tujuh faktor-faktor yang berpengaruh terhadap motivasi para mahasiswa dalam belajar bahasa Inggris, yaitu: goals, needs, interest and coriosity, attitude, expectancy and self efficacy, lecturers as the role model, course content and classroom, dan social identity.   Kata Kunci: Motivasi, kecenderungan motivasi   Abstract:This research entitled The Investigation of The English Education Study Program Students’ Motivation Trend in Learning English. The purpose of this research is to describe students’ motivation trend in learning English in the classroom. This research was done in descriptive study. The researcher used questionnaire and interview as the tools of collecting data. The research data are taken from 2nd, 4th, and 6th semester students of English Education Study Program year 2011/2012. The research finding showed that 2nd, 4th, and 6th semester students have more or less same patterns of motivation. There are also seven factors that contribute to students motivation in learning English, they are: goals, needs, interest and coriosity, attitude, expectancy and self efficacy, lecturers as the role model, course content and classroom, and social identity. THE USE OF COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIC READING FOR TEACHING NARRATIVE READING

Abstract: This research investigated the effectiveness of Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) for teaching narrative reading to Year-11 students of “SMAN 2 Teluk Keramat” in academic year 2015/2016. The research method was quasi-experimental research with experimental group and control group. The data was taken by measurement test using multiple choices. The research findings show the mean score interval of pre-test and post-test for experimental group is 6.36. The mean score interval of pre-test and post-test for control group is 2.38. It means that the interval score of experimental group is higher than the control group. The obtained effect size is 0.403 and categorized as modest effect. Therefore, the effectiveness of Collaborative Strategic Reading for teaching narrative to Year-11 students of “SMAN 2 Teluk Keramat” is modest effect. Abstrak: Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan tingkat efektifitas dari strategi Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) untuk mengajarkan membaca komprehensif teks naratif dalam pelajaran bahasa inggris pada siswa kelas 11 SMAN 2 Teluk Keramat tahun ajaran 2015/2016. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah quasi-eksperimen dengan kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol. Data diambil dengan test pilihan ganda. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa interval nilai rata-rata pre-test dan post-test kelompok eksperimen adalah 6.36. Interval nilai rata-rata pre-test dan post-test kelompok control adalah 2.38. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai interval rata-rata kelompok eksperimen lebih tinggi dari kelompok kontrol. Tingkat efektifitas yang diperoleh yaitu 0.403 dan dikategorikan sebagai efek sedang. Maka dari itu, tingkat efektifitas dari strategi Collaborative Strategic Reading (CSR) untuk mengajarkan membaca komprehensif teks naratif dalam pelajaran bahasa inggris pada siswa kelas 11 SMAN 2 Teluk Keramat adalah sedang. STUDENTS’ DIFFICULTIES IN LEARNING VOCABULARIES

This study was conducted among early English learners when they encountered problems in learning vocabularies. The purpose of this study was to uncover difficulties in learning English vocabularies faced by 33 Pesantren (boarding school) students in West Kalimantan. These students had low achievement in vocabulary mastery. The data were derived from questionnaires and interviews with selected students. The data revealed that the students experienced four difficulties, namely, pronouncing unique English sounds, spelling, memorizing long syllable-words, and understanding meaning of unfamiliar words

AN ANALYSIS OF THE ENGLISH SUMMATIVE TEST ITEMS

Abstract:An appropriate summative test should consider the validity, which consist of content validity, level of difficulty and discriminating power, and reliability. The aim of this research is to find out those terms of quality for the eighth grade English Summative test in SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Raya.The research design in this research is descriptive quantitative which present and describe the data. The samples of this reaserch in the sumative test items. The research finding showed that the content validity was classified into invalid test due to the unavailability of the table specification. The mean score for the level of difficulty is 0.582 and categorized as moderate summative test, and the discriminating power mean score is 0.368 and categorized as a good summative test. The reliability mean score is 0.742 and categorized as a substantial summative test. In general the test was classified as a good summative test despite the unavailability of the table of specification.   Key words:EnglishSummative,Test Items Abstrak: Sebuah test yang baik harus harus memenuhi tingkat validitas yang baik, yang terdiri dari validitas isi, tingkat kesukaran dan daya pembeda, serta reabilitas. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mencari tahu kualitas tersebut pada butir soal ujian akhir semester ganjil di SMP Negeri 1 Sungai Raya. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kuantitaf yang menampilkan data dan menjelaskannya. Sample dari penelitia ini adalah butir-butir soal pada ujjian akhir semester ganjil. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa validitas isi test dikategorikan sebagai test yang tidak sah dikarenakan ketidak tersediannya kisi-kisi soal. Nilai rata-rata untuk tingkat kesukaran adalah 0.582 dan dikategorikan kedalam test yang sedang, sementara itu untuk nilai daya pembeda adalah 0.368 yang dikategorikan sebagai test yang bagus. Selanjutnya, test tersebut mempunyai tingkat reliabilitas yang kuku dengan nilai 0.742. Secara keseluruhan butir-butir soal ujian akhir semester tersebut dikategorikan sebagai test yang bagus meskipun tidak ada kisi-kisi soal.   Kata Kunci: Test Sumatif Bahasa Inggris,Butir Soa

IMPROVING THE STUDENTS ABILITY IN READING NARRATIVE TEXT BY USING FOLK TALE (LOCAL LEGEND)

ABSTRAK Penelitian ini adalah yang dilandasi dari masalah-masalah yang ditemukan dalam proses mengajar belajar teks narrative pada siswa di kelas VIII SMP Yos Sudarso Parindu. Masalah-masalah mereka dalam pelajaran membaca dan mereka memiliki motivasi yang rendah dalam belajar bahasa Inggris khususnya dalam membaca dikelas. Menimbulkan masalah yang diperoleh siswa kesulitan dalam pemahaman tata bahasa didalam teks bacaan; mereka tidak mengetahui arti dari kosa kata yang tidak umum atau biasa. Disamping itu juga materi membaca di dalam teks buku adalah tidak menyenangkan kepada mereka karena cerita selalu dari daerah yang lain atau Negara lain dan teks bacaannya tidak mendukung latar belakang siswa. The problems were that they were uninterested in reading lesson and they got low motivation in learning English especially in reading class. Consequently, the students got difficulty to understand the grammatical construction in the text they read; they did not know the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. Besides, the reading materials in the text book were not interesting to them because the stories often came from other countries and the reading texts were not appropriate to the students background knowledge.
