    Miniaturized Resonator and Bandpass Filter for Silicon-Based Monolithic Microwave and Millimeter-Wave Integrated Circuits

Personal use is permitted, but republication/redistribution requires IEEE permission.This paper introduces a unique approach for the implementation of a miniaturized on-chip resonator and its application for the first-order bandpass filter (BPF) design. This approach utilizes a combination of a broadside-coupling technique and a split-ring structure. To fully understand the principle behind it, simplified LC equivalent-circuit models are provided. By analyzing these models, guidelines for implementation of an ultra-compact resonator and a BPF are given. To further demonstrate the feasibility of using this approach in practice, both the implemented resonator and the filter are fabricated in a standard 0.13-μm (Bi)-CMOS technology. The measured results show that the resonator can generate a resonance at 66.75 GHz, while the BPF has a center frequency at 40 GHz and an insertion loss of 1.7 dB. The chip size of both the resonator and the BPF, excluding the pads, is only 0.012mm 2 (0.08 × 0.144 mm 2).Peer reviewe

    APPLICATION OF CUSTOM-FIT FOOT ORTHOSES TO ENHANCE ATHLETIC PERFORMANCE –EXAMPLES IN RUNNING AND CYCLING

    Running or cycling related soft tissue and joint injuries of the lower extremities are thought mainly due to the malalignment of skeletal structure which causes muscle overuse activity and high joint obstruct loading. In correcting this abnormal foot and lower extremity dysfunction, functional foot orthoses (or orthotic) are often prescribed to control abnormal foot motions and to alter the abnormal joint loadings, particularly for the over- pronated foot. They are many types of orthosis on the market, most of off-shelf products and expensive custom made ones are usually exaggerated, some even provides misleading concepts, which results in over expectation from users. Many recent literatures have challenged the accepted concept that the foot dysfunction is necessary associated with sports injury, and the orthosis is good prescription for sports injury prevention. The disagreement of efficacy of functional orthosis may be caused by the experimental setup of biomechanical researches and underlined abnormality of recruited individuals.     CULTURAL AND GENDER SHIFTS: TRENDS AND FACTORS HMONG MALE STUDENTS FACE IN PURSUIT OF HIGHER EDUCATION

    The educational trends in the attainment of Hmong American students in higher education have grown significantly over the past 40+ years. However, modern academia is still somewhat new to most United States Hmong refugees since their resettlement in 1975 after the Vietnam War. Hmong students are children of refugee immigrants who came to the United States with no formal schooling, limited English proficiency, and a low-socioeconomic background. Hmong parents believe that having an education will enable their children to seek employment, perform well in society, and gain financial stability. The purpose of this study was to analyze challenges that contribute to Hmong male students with the aim to understand how factors such as education, cultural influences, and life challenges impact the low educational attainment of Hmong male students in college. The research examined (a) How do traditional cultural factors and contributing life challenges affect Hmong male students’ education? and (b) What educational challenges are perceived by Hmong male students as they navigate higher education? The qualitative phenomenological research captured the narrative experiences of Hmong male students in the pursuit of higher education. This study also provides insights and recommendations for colleges and universities to develop strategies to increase retention and academic success for Hmong male students’ educational attainment

    By presenting Riordan matrix as a triangle, the central coefficients are entries in the central column. Starting at the central column, the r-shifted central coefficients are entries in column r of the right part of the triangle. This paper aims to characterize the r-shifted central coefficients of Riordan matrices. Here we will concentrate on four elements of the subgroups of the Riordan group, that is, the Bell subgroup, the associated subgroup, the derivative subgroup, and the hitting time subgroup. Some examples are presented to show how we deduce the generating functions for interesting sequences by using different means of calculating these r-shifted central coefficients. Besides, we make some extensions in the Bell subgroup

    Improved score statistics for meta‐analysis in single‐variant and gene‐level association studies

    Meta‐analysis is now an essential tool for genetic association studies, allowing them to combine large studies and greatly accelerating the pace of genetic discovery. Although the standard meta‐analysis methods perform equivalently as the more cumbersome joint analysis under ideal settings, they result in substantial power loss under unbalanced settings with various case–control ratios. Here, we investigate the power loss problem by the standard meta‐analysis methods for unbalanced studies, and further propose novel meta‐analysis methods performing equivalently to the joint analysis under both balanced and unbalanced settings. We derive improved meta‐score‐statistics that can accurately approximate the joint‐score‐statistics with combined individual‐level data, for both linear and logistic regression models, with and without covariates. In addition, we propose a novel approach to adjust for population stratification by correcting for known population structures through minor allele frequencies. In the simulated gene‐level association studies under unbalanced settings, our method recovered up to 85% power loss caused by the standard methods. We further showed the power gain of our methods in gene‐level tests with 26 unbalanced studies of age‐related macular degeneration . In addition, we took the meta‐analysis of three unbalanced studies of type 2 diabetes as an example to discuss the challenges of meta‐analyzing multi‐ethnic samples.     Coherent quantum effects through dispersive bosonic media

    The coherent evolution of two atomic qubits mediated by a set of bosonic field modes is investigated. By assuming a specific encoding of the quantum states in the internal levels of the two atoms we show that entangling quantum gates can be realised, with high fidelity, even when a large number of mediating modes is involved. The effect of losses and imperfections on the gates' operation is also considered in detail.Comment: 7 pages, 10 figure

    ACNet: Approaching-and-Centralizing Network for Zero-Shot Sketch-Based Image Retrieval

    The huge domain gap between sketches and photos and the highly abstract sketch representations pose challenges for sketch-based image retrieval (\underline{SBIR}). The zero-shot sketch-based image retrieval (\underline{ZS-SBIR}) is more generic and practical but poses an even greater challenge because of the additional knowledge gap between the seen and unseen categories. To simultaneously mitigate both gaps, we propose an \textbf{A}pproaching-and-\textbf{C}entralizing \textbf{Net}work (termed "\textbf{ACNet}") to jointly optimize sketch-to-photo synthesis and the image retrieval. The retrieval module guides the synthesis module to generate large amounts of diverse photo-like images which gradually approach the photo domain, and thus better serve the retrieval module than ever to learn domain-agnostic representations and category-agnostic common knowledge for generalizing to unseen categories. These diverse images generated with retrieval guidance can effectively alleviate the overfitting problem troubling concrete category-specific training samples with high gradients. We also discover the use of proxy-based NormSoftmax loss is effective in the zero-shot setting because its centralizing effect can stabilize our joint training and promote the generalization ability to unseen categories. Our approach is simple yet effective, which achieves state-of-the-art performance on two widely used ZS-SBIR datasets and surpasses previous methods by a large margin.Comment: the paper is under consideration at IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems for Video Technolog

    Improving the CALA\u27s Social Media Experience: The First CALA Social Media Survey

    The Chinese American Librarians Association (CALA) currently uses three social media channels, CALA Facebook, WeChat, and YouTube. In order to improve their presence and better serve the CALA members, CALA\u27s first social media survey was conducted at the end of 2016 to seek feedback from its members and friends. This poster will present the background information for the survey, its methodology, findings, recommendations and follow-up. 18 questions were compiled, added to LimeSurvey and distributed to the CALA members via its Listserv. These questions attempted to address the users\u27 social media usage, participation level, time spent on the CALA\u27s social media channels, and their perception and experience of these channels, including their understanding of the main functions of these channels, whether they felt a sense of community in these channels, and how likely they are to share information. In addition, they were also asked to provide feedback about possible future directions of the CALA’s social media in regards to the possibility of creating additional channels, the desirable content categories, and their preferred language. The responses were analyzed and illustrated using Excel. A list of recommendations were made, including experimenting with ways to get members more involved in the social networking arena by creating a private Facebook group, WeChat public account, or LinkedIn group. The ultimate goal is to encourage members to participate and engage with each other on the CALA’s social media channels. The survey was coordinated by the CALA Social Media Group and follow-up efforts will be addressed.     Latent Neural ODE for Integrating Multi-timescale measurements in Smart Distribution Grids

    Under a smart grid paradigm, there has been an increase in sensor installations to enhance situational awareness. The measurements from these sensors can be leveraged for real-time monitoring, control, and protection. However, these measurements are typically irregularly sampled. These measurements may also be intermittent due to communication bandwidth limitations. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a novel latent neural ordinary differential equations (LODE) approach to aggregate the unevenly sampled multivariate time-series measurements. The proposed approach is flexible in performing both imputations and predictions while being computationally efficient. Simulation results on IEEE 37 bus test systems illustrate the efficiency of the proposed approach
