Lead-Free Piezoelectrics
Ecological restrictions in many parts of the world are demanding the elimination of Pb from all consumer items. At this moment in the piezoelectric ceramics industry, there is no issue of more importance than the transition to lead-free materials. The goal of Lead-Free Piezoelectrics is to provide a comprehensive overview of the fundamentals and developments in the field of lead-free materials and products to leading researchers in the world. The text presents chapters on demonstrated applications of the lead-free materials, which will allow readers to conceptualize the present possibilities and will be useful for both students and professionals conducting research on ferroelectrics, piezoelectrics, smart materials, lead-free materials, and a variety of applications including sensors, actuators, ultrasonic transducers and energy harvesters
Hammer Impact-Driven Power Generator Using Buzzer-Type Piezoelectric Energy Converter for Wind Power Generator Applications
A novel hammer-impact-driven power generator that uses a buzzer-type piezoelectric energy converter (BPEC) for wind-power-generator applications was designed, and the dynamic motions and output characteristics were analyzed. As the active material, Sm0.025-Pb0.9625[(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.71Ti0.29]O3 (Sm-PMN-PT)ceramic was used; this material has a high piezoelectric charge constant of 1100 pC/N and an electromechanical coupling factor of 58%. A rotational impeller triggered an impact between one end of the bar-type hammer, and, thereby, impact energy transferred to the BPECs. The manufactured power generator was tested from 50 RPM to 250 RPM, using the handmade evaluation system; it was able to operate with small impact force and greatly improved output performance as rotation speed increased. The maximum output of the generator was 10.4 W at a load resistance of 500 Ω and rotation speed of 250 RPM. For improvement of the output characteristics, the generators were arranged such that they could operate simultaneously. Moreover, the proposed model was applied to a Savonius–Darrieus turbine, and the output performance was evaluated at various wind conditions in a wind tunnel
Impedance spectroscopy technique for estimating the oxidation of the PyC interphase layer in a SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composite
ABSTRACTA new technique using impedance spectroscopy was developed to estimate the oxidation kinetics of the pyrolytic carbon interphase layer in SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites. The AC impedance Nyquist plot showed two semicircles that were curve-fitted using an equivalent circuit with two constant-phase element components. The analysis results revealed that the capacitance in the low-frequency region decreased with increasing oxidation time, whereas that in the high-frequency region remained relatively constant. This change in the capacitance in the low-frequency region was associated with the thickness of the oxidized SiO2 layer. This study might make a significant contribution to the literature, which has mostly focused on the characterization of ceramic matrix composites through measurements of mechanical properties. The limitations and potential applications of the developed method were also elucidated
Effect of Oxygen Vacancy on the Conduction Modulation Linearity and Classification Accuracy of Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 Memristor
An amorphous Pr0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (PCMO) film was grown on a TiN/SiO2/Si (TiN–Si) substrate at 300 °C and at an oxygen pressure (OP) of 100 mTorr. This PCMO memristor showed typical bipolar switching characteristics, which were attributed to the generation and disruption of oxygen vacancy (OV) filaments. Fabrication of the PCMO memristor at a high OP resulted in nonlinear conduction modulation with the application of equivalent pulses. However, the memristor fabricated at a low OP of 100 mTorr exhibited linear conduction modulation. The linearity of this memristor improved because the growth and disruption of the OV filaments were mostly determined by the redox reaction of OV owing to the presence of numerous OVs in this PCMO film. Furthermore, simulation using a convolutional neural network revealed that this PCMO memristor has enhanced classification performance owing to its linear conduction modulation. This memristor also exhibited several biological synaptic characteristics, indicating that an amorphous PCMO thin film fabricated at a low OP would be a suitable candidate for artificial synapses
