A record of bilateral gynandromorphism in Epeolus (Hymenoptera: Apidae: Nomadinae)
The discovery of a gynandromorph of a North American Epeolus Latreille is reported. A specimen of E. flavofasciatus Smith from Flagstaff, Arizona, USA discovered in the collection of the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) exhibits male-specific features on the left and female-specific features on the right, consistent with bilateral gynandromorphism (the first known case in the genus). Descriptions and images of the aberrant features exhibited by the specimen are presented
Multilingual Unsupervised Sentence Simplification
Progress in Sentence Simplification has been hindered by the lack of
supervised data, particularly in languages other than English. Previous work
has aligned sentences from original and simplified corpora such as English
Wikipedia and Simple English Wikipedia, but this limits corpus size, domain,
and language. In this work, we propose using unsupervised mining techniques to
automatically create training corpora for simplification in multiple languages
from raw Common Crawl web data. When coupled with a controllable generation
mechanism that can flexibly adjust attributes such as length and lexical
complexity, these mined paraphrase corpora can be used to train simplification
systems in any language. We further incorporate multilingual unsupervised
pretraining methods to create even stronger models and show that by training on
mined data rather than supervised corpora, we outperform the previous best
results. We evaluate our approach on English, French, and Spanish
simplification benchmarks and reach state-of-the-art performance with a totally
unsupervised approach. We will release our models and code to mine the data in
any language included in Common Crawl
This essay presents violence against women as a social problem of high magnitude as well as based on gender inequality. The author summarizes both the main discussion issues and the last decades' Latin American feminist fight. She highlights the conception of violence against women as a public problem, a negation of citizenship rights and as a law matter. Despite the withdrawals and the contradictory character of the relations between the feminist movement and the social institutions, there is no doubt that the configuration of a new social practice related to violence perpetrated against women is taking place
Merging syntactic lexica: the case for French verbs
International audienceSyntactic lexicons, which associate each lexical entry with information such as valency, are crucial for several natural language processing tasks, such as parsing. However, because they contain a rich and complex information, they are very costly to develop. In this paper, we show how syntactic lexical resources can be merged, in order to take benefit from their respective strong points, and despite the disparities in the way they represent syntactic lexical information. We illustrate our methodology with the example of French verbs. We describe four large-coverage syntactic lexicons for this language, among which the Lefff, and show how we were able, using our merging algorithm, to extend and improve the Lefff
DeLex, a freely-avaible, large-scale and linguistically grounded morphological lexicon for German
International audienceWe introduce DeLex, a freely-avaible, large-scale and linguistically grounded morphological lexicon for German developed within the Alexina framework. We extracted lexical information from the German wiktionary and developed a morphological inflection grammar for German, based on a linguistically sound model of inflectional morphology. Although the developement of DeLex involved some manual work, we show that is represents a good tradeoff between development cost, lexical coverage and resource accuracy
In silico Gene Characterization and biological annotation of Aspergillus niger CBS 513.88
Genome annotation is the process of estimation of biological features from genomic data. The target of a genome annotation is to identify the key features of the genome sequence particularly, the genes and gene products. The characteristics of a gene, its products, and gene prediction programs of Aspergillus niger are discussed. Although the number of genomes in genomic databases are increasing day by day, genome-wide analyses are affected by the quality of the genome annotations. This study illustrates the importance of integrative approaches for automatic annotations of genomes of Aspergillus niger by computational methods. However, the annotation process is more complicated in Eukaryotes; we used a comparative study for gene prediction using the FgenesH algorithm by various software providers. The final annotation of Aspergillus niger CBS 513.88. has been created as a GB file in Artemis, A sequence viewer and annotation tool was developed in the anger Institute
