From the view point of sustainable development, this paper explores how the three aspects comprising sustainable development embody and influence the old building/neighborhood adaptive reuse. We argue that most of the reuse practices focus on economic aspect, aiming at maximum monetary pay back. Beside this, another trend is emerging, which strives to update environmental performance of old buildings/districts. Review of Contemporary Adaptive Reuse Movement for industrial sites in China

Within a relatively brief span of time, adaptive reuse emerges as a fashionable architectural and urban renewal activity for many of those economically vibrant cities of China. The author and his team are astonished by the level of proliferation and sophistication that some of these projects exhibit, regardless of the geographical location or characteristics of society concerned (as ‘adaptive reuse’ entails cross-disciplinary interactions such as social, economic and physical challenges). One thing that is a common sight in almost all of these urban rehabilitation projects is that for the present time there is an over-indulgence on creative arts as an universal norm to rejuvenating deserted or dilapidated buildings, turning them just like that into galleries for artists, photographers; or studios for fashion, graphic designers and architects. This unquestioned attitude towards creative arts as the best recipe to rejuvenate industrial or residential buildings challenges the author’s attempt to examine the conceiving idea, market perception towards the roles of historic buildings notably industrial buildings, the interpretation of sustainability from a broad perspective – social, economics and environment. Though the study is primarily based on field study instead of literature research, it is feasible to observe that the deployment of creative arts as an economic driver presents itself as an imbalanced approach for sustainability sake. Such observation grants us a chance to recuperate the meaning of sustainability for sustainable urban development. The author refers to a number of selected case studies from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou in order to unfold and discuss those sustainability strategies adopted by developers so as to generate an agenda for further research.published_or_final_versio

Sustainable: the urban model based on high-density, high-rise and multiple, intensive land use: the case of Hong Kong

China is going through one of the most dramatic social and cultural transformations in its history. In this speed change scenario, the never - questioned conventions in the western architecture have been betrayed. Invention, reinterpretation sometimes even revolution, never represent a step further as they did in the XXI century theoretical thinking. To engage architectural thoughts with the booming economy could contribute to the definition of a contemporary Chinese architecture, far from the generic city, in a society that has evolved from pre-modernism to post-industrialism in a short period of time. Unilateral epistaxis after swimming in a stream

A 55-year-old Chinese woman presented with a 3-week history of unilateral left-sided epistaxis and nasal obstruction. She had swum in a freshwater stream 1 month prior to the onset of symptoms. Endoscopic examination revealed a live leech at the left middle meatus with a large part of its body inside the left maxillary antrum. Local anaesthetic was applied to anaesthetise the leech and facilitate removal. Magnetic resonance imaging performed following removal confirmed that no other leeches were present in the sinonasal area. The endoparasitism might have persisted because of the inconspicuous site of infestation and the absence of pain. This form of leech infestation has not been previously reported.published_or_final_versio

Human enterovirus 71 and hand, foot and mouth disease

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is generally a benign febrile exanthematous childhood disease caused by human enteroviruses. The route of transmission is postulated to be faeco-oral in developing areas but attributed more to respiratory droplet in developed areas. Transmission is facilitated by the prolonged environmental survival of these viruses and their greater resistance to biocides. Serious outbreaks with neurological and cardiopulmonary complications caused by human enterovirus 71 (HEV-71) seem to be commoner in the Asian Pacific region than elsewhere in the world. This geographical predilection is unexplained but could be related to the frequency of intra- and inter-typic genetic recombinations of the virus, the host populations' genetic predisposition, environmental hygiene, and standard of healthcare. Vaccine development could be hampered by the general mildness of the illness and rapid genetic evolution of the virus. Antivirals are not readily available; the role of intravenous immunoglobulin in the treatment of serious complications should be investigated. Monitoring of this disease and its epidemiology in the densely populated Asia Pacific epicentre is important for the detection of emerging epidemics due to enteroviruses.
