Spectrophotometry of Epsilon Aur, 3295-8880 A
Spectrophotometric scans were obtained at 8 A resolution from 3295 to 8880 A on twenty nights before, during, and after the recent eclipse of epsilon Aurigae, beginning with a pre-eclipse observation on 5 March 1982 U.T. The observations were reduced to absolute flux using the standard stars 109 Vir or xi(2) Ceti. The data confirm that the eclipse is essentially gray over the entire visible spectrum, as others have noted from broadband photometry. High resolution echellograms (450 to 6700 A) made through mid-eclipse and the scans show changes in the equivalent widths of H alpha, Na D, and O I as large as a factor of two
Age-Related Differences in Cortical Thickness Vary by Socioeconomic Status
Recent findings indicate robust associations between socioeconomic status (SES) and brain structure in children, raising questions about the ways in which SES may modify structural brain development. In general, cortical thickness and surface area develop in nonlinear patterns across childhood and adolescence, with developmental patterns varying to some degree by cortical region. Here, we examined whether age-related nonlinear changes in cortical thickness and surface area varied by SES, as indexed by family income and parental education. We hypothesized that SES disparities in age-related change may be particularly evident for language- and literacy-supporting cortical regions. Participants were 1148 typically-developing individuals between 3 and 20 years of age. Results indicated that SES factors moderate patterns of age-associated change in cortical thickness but not surface area. Specifically, at lower levels of SES, associations between age and cortical thickness were curvilinear, with relatively steep age-related decreases in cortical thickness earlier in childhood, and subsequent leveling off during adolescence. In contrast, at high levels of SES, associations between age and cortical thickness were linear, with consistent reductions across the age range studied. Notably, this interaction was prominent in the left fusiform gyrus, a region that is critical for reading development. In a similar pattern, SES factors significantly moderated linear age-related change in left superior temporal gyrus, such that higher SES was linked with steeper age-related decreases in cortical thickness in this region. These findings suggest that SES may moderate patterns of age-related cortical thinning, especially in language- and literacy-supporting cortical regions
Peanut stripe virus - a new seed-borne potyvirus from China infecting groundnut (Arachis hypogaea)
A new virus, peanut stripe (PStV), isolated from groundnut (Arachis hypogaea) in the USA, induced characteristic striping, discontinuous vein banding along the lateral veins, and oakleaf mosaic in groundnut. The virus was also isolated from germplasm lines introduced from the People's Republic of China. PStV was transmitted by inoculation of sap to nine species of the Chenopodiaceae, Leguminosae, and Solanaceae; Chenopodium amaranticolor was a good local lesion host. PStV was also transmitted by Aphis craccivora in a non-persistent manner and through seed of groundnut up to 37%. The virus remained infective in buffered plant extracts after diluting to 10-3, storage for 3 days at 20°C, and heating for 10 min at 60°C but not 65°C. Purified virus preparations contained flexuous filamentous particles c. 752 nm long, which contained a major polypeptide of 33 500 daltons and one nucleic acid species of 3·1 × 106 daltons. In ELISA, PStV was serologically related to blackeye cowpea mosaic, soybean mosaic, clover yellow vein, and pepper veinal mottle viruses but not to peanut mottle, potato Y, tobacco etch, and peanut green mosaic viruses. On the basis of these properties PStV is identified as a new potyvirus in groundnut
Opaque Governance, Special Purpose Vehicles, and the Preacher's Waiver
This paper argues that special purpose vehicles, SPVs, are two-edged financial constructs whose bad edge consists in conveying opaque governance, whereas its good one amounts to interesting financial engineering. Firstly, the notion of opaque governance is highlighted, to focus next on SPVs and their governance. Afterwards, the paper delves into collateralized debt obligations and their facilitators, the offshore locations. Last, the failing role of some regulators and gatekeepers is emphasized with the purpose of setting up new measures to prevent them from claiming the Preacher's waiver
The Primordial Binary Population - I: A near-infrared adaptive optics search for close visual companions to A star members of Scorpius OB2
We present the results of a near-infrared adaptive optics survey with the aim
to detect close companions to Hipparcos members in the three subgroups of the
nearby OB association Sco OB2: Upper Scorpius (US), Upper Centaurus Lupus (UCL)
and Lower Centaurus Crux (LCC). We have targeted 199 A-type and late B-type
stars in the Ks band, and a subset also in the J and H band. We find 151
stellar components other than the target stars. A brightness criterion is used
to separate these components into 77 background stars and 74 candidate physical
companion stars. Out of these 74 candidate companions, 41 have not been
reported before (14 in US; 13 in UCL; 14 in LCC). Companion star masses range
from 0.1 to 3 Msun. The mass ratio distribution follows f(q) = q^-0.33, which
excludes random pairing. No close (rho < 3.75'') companion stars or background
stars are found in the magnitude range 12 < Ks < 14. The lack of stars with
these properties cannot be explained by low-number statistics, and may imply a
lower limit on the companion mass of ~ 0.1 Msun. Close stellar components with
Ks > 14 are observed. If these components are very low-mass companion stars, a
gap in the companion mass distribution might be present. The small number of
close low-mass companion stars could support the embryo-ejection formation
scenario for brown dwarfs. Our findings are compared with and complementary to
visual, spectroscopic, and astrometric data on binarity in Sco OB2. We find an
overall companion star fraction of 0.52 in this association. This paper is the
first step toward our goal to derive the primordial binary population in Sco

Tensor Regression with Applications in Neuroimaging Data Analysis
Classical regression methods treat covariates as a vector and estimate a
corresponding vector of regression coefficients. Modern applications in medical
imaging generate covariates of more complex form such as multidimensional
arrays (tensors). Traditional statistical and computational methods are proving
insufficient for analysis of these high-throughput data due to their ultrahigh
dimensionality as well as complex structure. In this article, we propose a new
family of tensor regression models that efficiently exploit the special
structure of tensor covariates. Under this framework, ultrahigh dimensionality
is reduced to a manageable level, resulting in efficient estimation and
prediction. A fast and highly scalable estimation algorithm is proposed for
maximum likelihood estimation and its associated asymptotic properties are
studied. Effectiveness of the new methods is demonstrated on both synthetic and

Age-related changes in global motion coherence: conflicting haemodynamic and perceptual responses
Our aim was to use both behavioural and neuroimaging data to identify indicators of perceptual decline in motion processing. We employed a global motion coherence task and functional Near Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS). Healthy adults (n = 72, 18-85) were recruited into the following groups: young (n = 28, mean age = 28), middle-aged (n = 22, mean age = 50), and older adults (n = 23, mean age = 70). Participants were assessed on their motion coherence thresholds at 3 different speeds using a psychophysical design. As expected, we report age group differences in motion processing as demonstrated by higher motion coherence thresholds in older adults. Crucially, we add correlational data showing that global motion perception declines linearly as a function of age. The associated fNIRS recordings provide a clear physiological correlate of global motion perception. The crux of this study lies in the robust linear correlation between age and haemodynamic response for both measures of oxygenation. We hypothesise that there is an increase in neural recruitment, necessitating an increase in metabolic need and blood flow, which presents as a higher oxygenated haemoglobin response. We report age-related changes in motion perception with poorer behavioural performance (high motion coherence thresholds) associated with an increased haemodynamic response
Reduced haemodynamic response in the ageing visual cortex measured by absolute fNIRS
The effect of healthy ageing on visual cortical activation is still to be fully explored. This study aimed to elucidate whether the haemodynamic response (HDR) of the visual cortex altered as a result of ageing. Visually normal (healthy) participants were presented with a simple visual stimulus (reversing checkerboard). Full optometric screening was implemented to identify two age groups: younger adults (n = 12, mean age 21) and older adults (n = 13, mean age 71). Frequency-domain Multi-distance (FD-MD) functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) was used to measure absolute changes in oxygenated [HbO] and deoxygenated [HbR] haemoglobin concentrations in the occipital cortices. Utilising a slow event-related design, subjects viewed a full field reversing checkerboard with contrast and check size manipulations (15 and 30 minutes of arc, 50% and 100% contrast). Both groups showed the characteristic response of increased [HbO] and decreased [HbR] during stimulus presentation. However, older adults produced a more varied HDR and often had comparable levels of [HbO] and [HbR] during both stimulus presentation and baseline resting state. Younger adults had significantly greater concentrations of both [HbO] and [HbR] in every investigation regardless of the type of stimulus displayed (p<0.05). The average variance associated with this age-related effect for [HbO] was 88% and [HbR] 91%. Passive viewing of a visual stimulus, without any cognitive input, showed a marked age-related decline in the cortical HDR. Moreover, regardless of stimulus parameters such as check size, the HDR was characterised by age. In concurrence with present neuroimaging literature, we conclude that the visual HDR decreases as healthy ageing proceeds
