Massive 3+1 Aharonov-Bohm fermions in an MIT cylinder
We study the effect of a background flux string on the vacuum energy of
massive Dirac fermions in 3+1 dimensions confined to a finite spatial region
through MIT boundary conditions. We treat two admissible self-adjoint
extensions of the Hamiltonian. The external sector is also studied and
unambiguous results for the Casimir energy of massive fermions in the whole

Physiological and thermographic response to heat stress in zebu cattle
AbstractThe objective of this study was to evaluate the heat tolerance of five zebu breeds using physical, physiological and hematological traits as well as thermographic responses. Forty cows of the Gir, Girolando, Nelore, Sindhi and Indubrasil breeds (eight cows each), approximately three years of age, were evaluated. Body weight, withers and hump heights as well as thoracic circumference were recorded. The density and length of the hair was obtained by collecting one square centimeter in the rump region and skin color using the CIELAB system. Rectal temperature, heart and respiratory rates were evaluated during the morning at 4:30h, and in the afternoon, at 14:30h, with six repetitions. Blood samples were collected for hematological evaluation. The surface temperature was obtained using an infrared camera FLIR® T400. Two images were taken from each animal, one laterally of the whole body and the other of the head region. Air temperature, wind speed, relative humidity were obtained from a mobile weather station. The statistics analysis included an analyzes of variance, principal factors, as well as cluster, discriminant and canonical analyzes, logistic regression and calculation of odds ratio. There were significant differences in the rectal temperature, heart and respiratory rates between breeds. Gir and Indubrasil breeds had the highest rectal temperatures. Breed was significant for surface temperatures and showed that physical and physiological factors affected breeds in different ways. Eye and brain surface temperatures were the most affected by environmental parameters. Also, environmental parameters affected packed cell volume and red cell number. Odds ratio test showed that the Gir breed was three times more likely to have higher rectal temperature compared with Sindhi as confirmed by the logistic regression. When the black globe temperature approached 35°C, the probability of the Gir animals having rectal temperatures above normal was approximately 70%. Gir was the breed least adapted to climate conditions of the experiment while the Sindhi and Girolando breeds showed the best physiological response to thermal stress
Classical and Quantum Strings in compactified pp-waves and Godel type Universes
We consider Neveu-Schwarz pp-waves with spacetime supersymmetry. Upon
compactification of a spacelike direction, these backgrounds develop Closed
Null Curves (CNCs) and Closed Timelike Curves (CTCs), and are U-dual to
supersymmetric Godel type universes. We study classical and quantum strings in
this background, with emphasis on the strings winding around the compact
direction. We consider two types of strings: long strings stabilized by NS flux
and rotating strings which are stabilized against collapse by angular momentum.
Some of the latter strings wrap around CNCs and CTCs, and are thus a potential
source of pathology. We analyze the partition function, and in particular
discuss the effects of these string states. Although our results are not
conclusive, the partition function seems to be dramatically altered due to the
presence of CNCs and CTCs. We discuss some interpretations of our results,

Trophic niche overlap between native freshwater mussels (Order: Unionida) and the invasive Corbicula fluminea
Freshwater mussels (Order Unionida) are highly threatened. Interspecific competition for food sources with invasive alien species is considered to be one of the factors responsible for their decline because successful invaders are expected to have wider trophic niches and more flexible feeding strategies than their native counterparts. In this study, carbon (δ13C: 13C/12C) and nitrogen (δ15N: 15N/14N) stable isotopes were used to investigate the trophic niche overlap between the native freshwater mussel species, Anodonta anatina, Potomida littoralis, and Unio delphinus, and the invasive bivalve Corbicula fluminea living in sympatry in the Tua basin (south-west Europe). The species presenting the widest trophic niches were C. fluminea and A. anatina, which indicate that they have broader diets than U. delphinus and P. littoralis. Nonetheless, all the species assimilated microphytobenthos, sediment organic matter, and detritus derived from vascular plants, although with interspecific variability in the assimilated proportions of each source. The trophic niche of the invasive species overlapped with the trophic niche of all the native species, with the extent varying between sites and according to the species. From the three native species analysed, Potomida littoralis may be at a higher risk for competition for food with C. fluminea in the Tua basin, if food sources become limited, because this native mussel presented the narrowest trophic niche across sites and the highest probability of overlapping with the trophic niche of C. fluminea. Given the global widespread distribution of C. fluminea, the implementation of management measures devoted to the control or even eradication of this invasive alien species should be a conservation priority given its potential for competition with highly threatened native freshwater mussels.V.M. and P.C. were supported by doctoral grants SFRH/BD/108298/2015 and SFRH/BD/131814/2017, respectively, from

An investigation of the potential application of chitosan/aloe-based membranes for regenerative medicine
A significant number of therapeutics derived from natural polymers and plants have been developed to
replace or to be used in conjunction with existing dressing products. The use of the therapeutic properties
of aloe vera could be very useful in the creation of active wound dressing materials. The present work was
undertaken to examine issues concerning structural features, topography, enzymatic degradation behavior,
antibacterial activity and cellular response of chitosan/aloe vera-based membranes. The chitosan/aloe
vera-based membranes that were developed displayed satisfactory degradation, roughness, wettability
and mechanical properties. A higher antibacterial potency was displayed by the blended membranes.
Moreover, in vitro assays demonstrated that these blended membranes have good cell compatibility with
primary human dermal fibroblasts. The chitosan/aloe vera-based membranes might be promising wound

Epigenetic dynamics during capacitation of naïve human pluripotent stem cells
Human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) are of fundamental relevance in regenerative medicine. Naïve hPSCs hold promise to overcome some of the limitations of conventional (primed) hPSCs, including recurrent epigenetic anomalies. Naïve-to-primed transition (capacitation) follows transcriptional dynamics of human embryonic epiblast and is necessary for somatic differentiation from naïve hPSCs. We found that capacitated hPSCs are transcriptionally closer to postimplantation epiblast than conventional hPSCs. This prompted us to comprehensively study epigenetic and related transcriptional changes during capacitation. Our results show that CpG islands, gene regulatory elements, and retrotransposons are hotspots of epigenetic dynamics during capacitation and indicate possible distinct roles of specific epigenetic modifications in gene expression control between naïve and primed hPSCs. Unexpectedly, PRC2 activity appeared to be dispensable for the capacitation. We find that capacitated hPSCs acquire an epigenetic state similar to conventional hPSCs. Significantly, however, the X chromosome erosion frequently observed in conventional female hPSCs is reversed by resetting and subsequent capacitation
