Structural and optical properties of europium doped zirconia single crystals fibers grown by laser floating zone

    Get PDF
Yttria stabilized zirconia single crystal fibers doped with europium ions were developed envisaging optical applications. The laser floating zone technique was used in order to grow millimetric high quality single crystal fibers. The as-grown fibers are completely transparent and inclusion free, exhibiting a cubic structure. Under ultraviolet (UV) excitation, a broad emission band appears at 551 nm. The europium doped fibers are translucent with a tetragonal structure and exhibit an intense red emission at room temperature under UV excitation. The fingerprint transition lines between the 5D0 and 7FJ(0–4) multiplets of the Eu3+ ions are observed with the main emission line at ∼ 606 nm due to 5D0→7F2 transition. Photoluminescence excitation and wavelength dependent the photoluminescence spectra confirm the existence of different Eu3+ optical centers. © 2011 American Institute of PhysicsFCT-PTDC/CTM/66195/2006FCT-SFRH/BD/45774/200

Instituto de Genética Médica Jacinto de Magalhães, Praça Pedro Nunes, 88, 4099-028 Porto, Portugal. Abstract We report a novel 14724G>A mutation in the mitochondrial tRNA glutamic acid gene in a 4-year-old boy with myopathy and leukoencephalopathy. A muscle biopsy showed cytochrome c oxidase-negative ragged-red fibers and biochemical analysis of the respiratory chain enzymes in muscle homogenate revealed partial complex I and complex IV deficiencies. The mutation, which affects the dihydrouridine arm at a conserved site, was nearly homoplasmic in muscle and heteroplasmic in blood DNA of the proband, but it was absent in peripheral leukocytes from the asymptomatic mother, sister, and two maternal aunts, suggesting that it arose de novo. This report proposes to look for variants in the mitochondrial genome when dealing with otherwise undetermined leukodystrophies of childhood. PMID: 17266923 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE

Sexing freshwater turtles: penile eversion in Phrynops tuberosus (Testudines: Chelidae)

Here, we described a noninvasive method for sexing freshwater turtles by stimulating penile eversion. We immobilized the neck and limbs of animals using fingers and, after some seconds, turtles everted their penis. This method was tested in 33 male Phrynops tuberosus, and 28 everted the penis. The efficiency of the method was not dependent of animal size, which reinforces its applicability. Our method allows sexing turtles in the field, avoiding killing the animal or causing major injuries in order to assess the sex

Factorization and Nonfactorization in B Decays

Using NLL values for Wilson coefficients and including the contributions from the penguin diagrams, we estimate the amount of nonfactorization in two-body hadronic B decays. Also, we investigate the model dependence of the nonfactorization parameters by performing the calculation using different models for the form factors. The results support the universality of nonfactorizable contributions in both Cabibbo-favored and Cabibbo-suppressed B decays.Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, revte

Structural and optical properties of Er implanted AlN thin films: green and infrared photoluminescence at room temperature

    Get PDF
In this work erbium ions were implanted into AlN films grown on sapphire with fluence range: (0.5-2) × 1015 at/cm-2, ion energy range: 150-350 keV and tilt angle: 0°, 10°, 20°, 30°. The optical and structural properties of the films are studied by means of photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy in combination with Rutherford backscattering/channeling (RBS/C) measurements. The photoluminescence spectra of the Er3+ were recorded in the visible and infrared region between 9 and 300 K after thermal annealing treatments of the samples. The emission spectrum of the AlN:Er films consists of two series of green lines centered at 538 and 558 nm with typical Er3+ emission in the infrared at 1.54 μm. The green lines have been identified as Er3+ transitions from the 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 levels to the 4I15/2 ground state. Different erbium centers in the matrix are suggested by the change of infrared photoluminescence relative intensity of some of the emission lines when different excitation wavelengths are used. The relative abundances of these centers can be varied by using different implantation parameters. The Raman and RBS/C measurements show good crystalline quality for all the studied films.PTDC/CTM/100756/2008SFRH/BD/45774/2008Portuguese Agency GRICESBrazilian Agency CAPES the Grant 172/0

Structural and optical properties on thulium-doped LHPG-grown Ta2O5 fibres

    Get PDF
Structural, spectroscopic and dielectric properties of thulium-doped laser-heated pedestal Ta2O5 as-grown fibres were studied. Undoped samples grow preferentially with a single crystalline monoclinic structure. The fibre with the lowest thulium content (0.1 at%) also shows predominantly a monoclinic phase and no intra-4f12 Tm3+ recombination was observed. For sample with the highest thulium amount (1.0 at%), the appearance of a dominant triclinic phase as well as intraionic optical activation was observed. The dependence of photoluminescence on excitation energy allows identification of different site locations of Tm3+ ions in the lattice. The absence of recombination between the first and the ground-state multiplets as well as the temperature dependence of the observed transitions was justified by an efficient energy transfer between the Tm3+ ions. Microwave dielectric properties were investigated using the small perturbation theory. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for thulium-doped Ta2O5 samples it decreases to 18 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value.FCT - PTDC/CTM/66195/2006FCT - PTDC/FIS/66262/2006FCT - PTDC/FIS/72843/200

Updated Analysis of a_1 and a_2 in Hadronic Two-body Decays of B Mesons

Using the recent experimental data of BD()(π,ρ)B\to D^{(*)}(\pi,\rho), BD()Ds()B\to D^{(*)} D_s^{(*)}, BJ/ψK()B\to J/\psi K^{(*)} and various model calculations on form factors, we re-analyze the effective coefficients a_1 and a_2 and their ratio. QCD and electroweak penguin corrections to a_1 from BD()Ds()B\to D^{(*)}D_s^{(*)} and a_2 from BJ/ψK()B\to J/\psi K^{(*)} are estimated. In addition to the model-dependent determination, the effective coefficient a_1 is also extracted in a model-independent way as the decay modes BD()hB\to D^{(*)}h are related by factorization to the measured semileptonic distribution of BD()νˉB\to D^{(*)}\ell \bar\nu at q2=mh2q^2=m_h^2. Moreover, this enables us to extract model-independent heavy-to-heavy form factors, for example, F0BD(mπ2)=0.66±0.06±0.05F_0^{BD}(m_\pi^2)=0.66\pm0.06\pm0.05 and A0BD(mπ2)=0.56±0.03±0.04A_0^{BD^*}(m_\pi^2)=0.56\pm0.03\pm0.04. The determination of the magnitude of a_2 from BJ/ψK()B\to J/\psi K^{(*)} depends on the form factors F1BKF_1^{BK}, A1,2BKA_{1,2}^{BK^*} and VBKV^{BK^*} at q2=mJ/ψ2q^2=m^2_{J/\psi}. By requiring that a_2 be process insensitive (i.e., the value of a_2 extracted from J/ψKJ/\psi K and J/ψKJ/\psi K^* states should be similar), as implied by the factorization hypothesis, we find that BK()B\to K^{(*)} form factors are severely constrained; they respect the relation F1BK(mJ/ψ2)1.9A1BK(mJ/ψ2)F_1^{BK}(m^2_{J/\psi})\approx 1.9 A_1^{BK^*}(m^2_{J/\psi}). Form factors A2BKA_2^{BK^*} and VBKV^{BK^*} at q2=mJ/ψ2q^2=m^2_{J/\psi} inferred from the measurements of the longitudinal polarization fraction and the P-wave component in BJ/ψKB\to J/\psi K^* are obtained. A stringent upper limit on a_2 is derived from the current bound on \ov B^0\to D^0\pi^0 and it is sensitive to final-state interactions.Comment: 33 pages, 2 figures.
