A chemical analysis of brewer’s medium for the aerobic culture of anaerobess
Polarographic methods for the estimation of thioglycollie acid, cysteine, and glutathione in culture media are described
Herpetosiphon-Nature's scavenger?
Strains of Herpetosiphon species have been shown to destroy whole colonies of several species of microorganisms. Of those examined, capsulated bacteria, endospores of Bacillus spp. and aleurospores of a Micromonospora sp. seem immune to attack. There is no clear distinction between Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as host organisms
Retrofilation and tumulation by strains of Herpetosiphon species
Heaping up of filaments (tumulation) preceded in most cases by a retraction of filaments (retrofilation) was observed in strains of Herpetosiphon spp. A correlation is suggested between the occurrence of the phenomena and the presence of free moisture on the surface of agar media. No evidence of structures resembling the myxospores of fruiting myxobacteria was found. Tumulations were found to consist of normal ensheathed filaments, some larger tumulations being hollow
