The graphene sheet versus the 2DEG: a relativistic Fano spin-filter via STM and AFM tips
We explore theoretically the density of states (LDOS) probed by an STM tip of
2D systems hosting an adatom and a subsurface impurity,both capacitively
coupled to AFM tips and traversed by antiparallel magnetic fields. Two kinds of
setups are analyzed, a monolayer of graphene and a two-dimensional electron gas
(2DEG). The AFM tips set the impurity levels at the Fermi energy, where two
contrasting behaviors emerge: the Fano factor for the graphene diverges, while
in the 2DEG it approaches zero. As result, the spin-degeneracy of the LDOS is
lifted exclusively in the graphene system, in particular for the asymmetric
regime of Fano interference. The aftermath of this limit is a counterintuitive
phenomenon, which consists of a dominant Fano factor due to the subsurface
impurity even with a stronger STM-adatom coupling. Thus we find a full
polarized conductance, achievable just by displacing vertically the position of
the STM tip. To the best knowledge, our work is the first to propose the Fano
effect as the mechanism to filter spins in graphene. This feature arises from
the massless Dirac electrons within the band structure and allows us to employ
the graphene host as a relativistic Fano spin-filter
Trophic innovations fuel reef fish diversification
Reef fishes are an exceptionally speciose vertebrate assemblage, yet the main drivers of their diversification remain unclear. It has been suggested that Miocene reef rearrangements promoted opportunities for lineage diversification, however, the specific mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we assemble near-complete reef fish phylogenies to assess the importance of ecological and geographical factors in explaining lineage origination patterns. We reveal that reef fish diversification is strongly associated with species’ trophic identity and body size. Large-bodied herbivorous fishes outpace all other trophic groups in recent diversification rates, a pattern that is consistent through time. Additionally, we show that omnivory acts as an intermediate evolutionary step between higher and lower trophic levels, while planktivory represents a common transition destination. Overall, these results suggest that Miocene changes in reef configurations were likely driven by, and subsequently promoted, trophic innovations. This highlights trophic evolution as a key element in enhancing reef fish diversification

A microscopic approach to heating rate of ferrofluid droplets by a magnetic field

The heating of the fluid occurs by the magnetic relaxation of the nanoparticles which provide thermal energy for the host liquid. In the limit of small volumes, the relaxation process occurs through the Neel mechanism since the magnetic nanoparticles present superparamagnetic behavior. Within this limit, we have used a microscopic model for the coupling to phonons and external magnetic field in order to model the relaxation mechanism and to obtain an expression for the heating rate of the fluid as a function of microscopic parameters. Myostatin (GDF8) single nucleotide polymorphisms in Nellore cattle.
The myostatin gene, also known as GDF8 (growth differentiation factor 8), is located on bovine chromosome 2 (BTA2); it has three exons and two introns. Myostatin is specifically expressed during embryonic development and in adult skeletal muscle, functioning as a negative regulatory protein. Several cattle breeds (Piedmontese, Belgian Blue and Blond?Aquitaine, and others) show polymorphisms in this gene; these polymorphisms are directly related to the double muscling phenotype. We looked for polymorphisms in the Nellore cattle myostatin gene and compared them with those known for taurine breeds. Seven regions, covering the three exons of this gene, were amplified by polymerase chain reaction and sequenced, including the untranslated region. DNA from 30 adult Nellore animals was collected; DNA sequencing revealed three, seven and four polymorphisms in exons 1, 2 and 3, respectively. We found previously reported polymorphisms, as well as several new ones; for instance, 37 polymorphisms were found in the untranslated region segment, and in introns 1 and 2 there were one and three polymorphisms, respectively. The high degree of allelic heterogeneity in the myostatin gene could be related to its high mutation rate; it also could be the result of a long history of artificial selection for meat production, which has probably favored such modifications and maintained them in cattle populations.
