Geant4 Simulation of a filtered X-ray Source for Radiation Damage Studies
Geant4 low energy extensions have been used to simulate the X-ray spectra of
industrial X-ray tubes with filters for removing the uncertain low energy part
of the spectrum in a controlled way. The results are compared with precisely
measured X-ray spectra using a silicon drift detector. Furthermore, this paper
shows how the different dose rates in silicon and silicon dioxide layers of an
electronic device can be deduced from the simulations
Ground-State Electromagnetic Moments of Calcium Isotopes
High-resolution bunched-beam collinear laser spectroscopy was used to measure
the optical hyperfine spectra of the Ca isotopes. The ground state
magnetic moments of Ca and quadrupole moments of Ca were
measured for the first time, and the Ca ground state spin was
determined in a model-independent way. Our results provide a critical test of
modern nuclear theories based on shell-model calculations using
phenomenological as well as microscopic interactions. The results for the
neutron-rich isotopes are in excellent agreement with predictions using
interactions derived from chiral effective field theory including three-nucleon
forces, while lighter isotopes illustrate the presence of particle-hole
excitations of the Ca core in their ground state.Comment: Accepted as a Rapid Communication in Physical Review
Certainty Closure: Reliable Constraint Reasoning with Incomplete or Erroneous Data
Constraint Programming (CP) has proved an effective paradigm to model and
solve difficult combinatorial satisfaction and optimisation problems from
disparate domains. Many such problems arising from the commercial world are
permeated by data uncertainty. Existing CP approaches that accommodate
uncertainty are less suited to uncertainty arising due to incomplete and
erroneous data, because they do not build reliable models and solutions
guaranteed to address the user's genuine problem as she perceives it. Other
fields such as reliable computation offer combinations of models and associated
methods to handle these types of uncertain data, but lack an expressive
framework characterising the resolution methodology independently of the model.
We present a unifying framework that extends the CP formalism in both model
and solutions, to tackle ill-defined combinatorial problems with incomplete or
erroneous data. The certainty closure framework brings together modelling and
solving methodologies from different fields into the CP paradigm to provide
reliable and efficient approches for uncertain constraint problems. We
demonstrate the applicability of the framework on a case study in network
diagnosis. We define resolution forms that give generic templates, and their
associated operational semantics, to derive practical solution methods for
reliable solutions.Comment: Revised versio
Virtual Resection: A New Tool for Preparing for Nephron-Sparing Surgery in Wilms Tumor Patients
Nephron-sparing surgery (NSS) in Wilms tumor (WT) patients is a surgically challenging procedure used in highly selective cases only. Virtual resections can be used for preoperative planning of NSS to estimate the remnant renal volume (RRV) and to virtually mimic radical tumor resection. In this single-center evaluation study, virtual resection for NSS planning and the user experience were evaluated. Virtual resection was performed in nine WT patient cases by two pediatric surgeons and one pediatric urologist. Pre- and postoperative MRI scans were used for 3D visualization. The virtual RRV was acquired after performing virtual resection and a questionnaire was used to assess the ease of use. The actual RRV was derived from the postoperative 3D visualization and compared with the derived virtual RRV. Virtual resection resulted in virtual RRVs that matched nearly perfectly with the actual RRVs. According to the questionnaire, virtual resection appeared to be straightforward and was not considered to be difficult. This study demonstrated the potential of virtual resection as a new planning tool to estimate the RRV after NSS in WT patients. Future research should further evaluate the clinical relevance of virtual resection by relating it to surgical outcome
Field theoretic approach to metastability in the contact process
A quantum field theoretic formulation of the dynamics of the Contact Process
on a regular graph of degree z is introduced. A perturbative calculation in
powers of 1/z of the effective potential for the density of particles phi(t)
and an instantonic field psi(t) emerging from the quantum formalism is
performed. Corrections to the mean-field distribution of densities of particles
in the out-of-equilibrium stationary state are derived in powers of 1/z.
Results for typical (e.g. average density) and rare fluctuation (e.g. lifetime
of the metastable state) properties are in very good agreement with numerical
simulations carried out on D-dimensional hypercubic (z=2D) and Cayley lattices.Comment: Final published version; 20 pages, 5 figure
Electric dipole polarizability of Ca
The electric dipole strength distribution in Ca between 5 and 25 MeV
has been determined at RCNP, Osaka, from proton inelastic scattering
experiments at very forward angles. Combined with total photoabsorption data at
higher excitation energy, this enables an extraction of the electric dipole
polarizability (Ca) = 1.92(17) fm. Together with
the measured in Ca, it provides a stringent test of
modern theoretical approaches, including coupled cluster calculations with
chiral effective field theory interactions and state-of-the art energy density
functionals. The emerging picture is that for this medium-mass region dipole
polarizabilities are well described theoretically, with important constraints
for the neutron skin in Ca and related equation of state quantities.Comment: 6 pages, 3 figure
Grain Boundaries in Graphene on SiC(000) Substrate
Grain boundaries in epitaxial graphene on the SiC(000) substrate are
studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. All investigated
small-angle grain boundaries show pronounced out-of-plane buckling induced by
the strain fields of constituent dislocations. The ensemble of observations
allows to determine the critical misorientation angle of buckling transition
. Periodic structures are found among the flat
large-angle grain boundaries. In particular, the observed highly ordered grain boundary is assigned to the previously
proposed lowest formation energy structural motif composed of a continuous
chain of edge-sharing alternating pentagons and heptagons. This periodic grain
boundary defect is predicted to exhibit strong valley filtering of charge
carriers thus promising the practical realization of all-electric valleytronic
devices
First Glimpse of the N= 82 Shell Closure below Z= 50 from Masses of Neutron-Rich Cadmium Isotopes and Isomers
We probe the N = 82 nuclear shell closure by mass measurements of neutron-rich cadmium isotopes with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer at ISOLDE-CERN. The new mass of 132 Cd offers the first value of the N = 82 , two-neutron shell gap below Z = 50 and confirms the phenomenon of mutually enhanced magicity at 132 Sn . Using the recently implemented phase-imaging ion-cyclotron-resonance method, the ordering of the low-lying isomers in 129 Cd and their energies are determined. The new experimental findings are used to test large-scale shell-model, mean-field, and beyond-mean-field calculations, as well as the ab initio valence-space in-medium similarity renormalization group
