Effects of Different Number of Sets of Resistance Training on Flexibility
International Journal of Exercise Science 10(3): 354-364, 2017. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of six months of training with three different number of sets of resistance training on flexibility in young men. Forty-seven men (mean ± SD age = 24 ± 1yrs; body mass = 79.39 ± 9.12 kg; height = 174.5 ± 5.6 cm) were randomly divided into three training groups performing either one set (G1S), three sets (G3S), or five sets (G5S) of all exercises in a resistance training session or a control group (CG). All groups were assessed pre- and post-training for Sit-and-Reach test and range of motion of 10 joints using goniometry. The training protocol included three weekly sessions and was composed of nine exercises performed at a moderate intensity (eight to 12RM). The results demonstrated significant differences pre- to post-training for the Sit-and-Reach test for all training groups; however, only the G5S showed significant differences when compared to the CG (31.04 ± 5.94cm vs. 23.56 ± 6.76cm, respectively; p \u3c 0.05). Of the ten joint movements measured, there were range of motion increases only to shoulder flexion (G1S), shoulder extension (G3S), elbow flexion (G3S), and knee flexion (G3S) when comparing pre- to post-training (p \u3c 0.05). In conclusion, different resistance training volumes improved flexibility for some joints of young men. These findings indicate that performing only resistance training can result in increases in flexibility
From Bloch Oscillations to a Steady-State Current in Strongly Biased Mesoscopic Devices
It has long been known that quantum particles in a periodic lattice exhibit
an oscillatory motion that is solely driven by a constant and uniform force
field. In a strongly biased mesoscopic device, this would appear as an ongoing
time-dependent current oscillation (a Bloch oscillation) but, even when
electrons can move coherently and without scattering, a steady-state regime of
charge transport (a Landauer current) have been seen to quickly emerge. Here,
we theoretically investigate the non-equilibrium current dynamics of a strongly
biased two-terminal mesoscopic device, in order to show that such a system can
exhibit Bloch oscillations as a transient regime that relaxes into a Landauer
steady-state from charge being drained into the leads. Analytical results from
the one-dimensional Wannier-Stark ladder problem are combined with numerical
quantum time-evolution of a tight-binding toy model with finite leads to
characterize the decay times of transient Bloch oscillations and establish the
conditions under which they can occur.Comment: Preliminary Version (13 pages + 12 Figures). Comments and Suggestions

Prenatal diagnosis of idic(9)
Tetrasomy of the short arm of chromosome 9 is a rare chromosome imbalance that may result from a supernumerary isochromosome 9 with the most recurrent breakpoints being 9p10, 9q12 and 9q13.
On ultrasound, it usually presents with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), abnormal facial profile and ventriculomegaly.
However, few reports establish a correlation between fetal features and the size of isochromosome or the presence of isodicentric 9.
We report the clinical case of a 32-year-old pregnant woman, G2P1, underwent amniocentesis at 13 weeks of gestation with fetal increased nuchal translucency (7mm). The fetus also presented IUGR, cystic higroma, generalized subcutaneous edema, cardiac malformations, facial anomalies and fetal death.
The karyotype was performed by standard in situ methods. Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed using centromeric probe CEP9.
Conventional cytogenetic and FISH analyses revealed a supernumerary chromosome idic(9)(q12) in all cells examined.
After counseling the couple opted for termination of pregnancy. The post-mortem analysis revealed a single umbilical arteria, IUGR, cystic higroma, facial dysmorphism with cleft lip and palate, hypertelorism and low set ears. These findings are in accordance with other reports.
Nevertheless, the hypertelorism is not commonly described and such an early detection of a cardiac anomaly is uncommon. Additionaly the fetal death occurred early than in the most cases described in literature.
Although breakpoint position effect on the severity on the phenotype is not consensual it has proposed that cases presenting with breakpoints on p10, on q12 or on q13 show a similar phenotype. However, cardiac defects seem more frequent on cases in which the abnormality includes 9q material.
This work aims to contribute to a better karyotype-phenotype correlation in cases with tetrasomy 9p and isodicentric chromosomes idic(9)
