Anisotropic elastic theory of preloaded granular media
A macroscopic elastic description of stresses in static, preloaded granular
media is derived systematically from the microscopic elasticity of individual
inter-grain contacts. The assumed preloaded state and friction at contacts
ensure that the network of inter-grain contacts is not altered by small
perturbations. The texture of this network, set by the preparation of the
system, is encoded in second and fourth order fabric tensors. A small
perturbation generates both normal and tangential inter-grain forces, the
latter causing grains to reorient. This reorientation response and the
incremental stress are expressed in terms of the macroscopic strain.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures. Accepted version. [email protected]

Cosmological Imprint of an Energy Component with General Equation of State
We examine the possibility that a significant component of the energy density
of the universe has an equation-of-state different from that of matter,
radiation or cosmological constant (). An example is a cosmic scalar
field evolving in a potential, but our treatment is more general. Including
this component alters cosmic evolution in a way that fits current observations
well. Unlike , it evolves dynamically and develops fluctuations,
leaving a distinctive imprint on the microwave background anisotropy and mass
power spectrum.Comment: revised version, with added references, to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett.

Cosmological constraints from lensing statistics and supernovae on the cosmic equation of state
We investigate observational constraints from lensing statistics and high-z
type Ia supernovae on flat cosmological models with nonrelativistic matter and
an exotic fluid with equation of state, . We show that
agreement with both tests at the 68% confidence level is possible if the
parameter is low () and with lower values of corresponding to higher .
We find that a conventional cosmological constant model with is the best fit model of the combined likelihood.Comment: 7 pages, 4 postscript figures, revtex, submitted to Phys. Rev.
