Household water security through stored rainwater and consumer acceptability: a case study of the Anuradhapura District
Rainwater harvesting has increased in popularity in Sri Lanka over the past two decades due to the number of water supply projects funded by the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The stored rainwater can provide accessible, reliable, timely and adequate supplies of water to households but there are uncertainties as to safety, in terms of water quality, and consumer acceptability. A study was, therefore, conducted in the Anuradhapura District, in the dry zone, to assess consumer acceptability of stored rainwater for household purposes and to conduct rainwater quality tests in a laboratory. The majority of households in Anuradhapura meet their drinking water requirements from protected wells (59.6 %). Prior to the project, people greatly preferred open wells as a source of domestic water, followed by tubewells, because they believed that water in open wells is of good quality and drinkable. However, stored rainwater has become the priority source now, especially through roof rainwater harvesting (RRWH), which is used during the dry periods. The study revealed that more than 85 % of households use stored rainwater for drinking although some have concerns over the quality and only drink it after boiling. The easy accessibility of water and the assurance by the project team that it is of good quality are the main reasons that people are willing to drink it. The acceptability of stored rainwater for consumption was very high in water-scarce areas and with the increasing distance to the nearest and alternative sources of good-quality water. Of those who felt that they had adequate water, 84 % of the sample households found it adequate in the wet season but only 21 % in the dry season. Water quality analysis revealed that the chemical and physical quality of stored rainwater is within the acceptable range with respect to Sri Lankan Standards, SLS: 614, for potable water quality (SLIS 1983). Other domestic water sources exceeded standards for electrical conductivity, total alkalinity, hardness, ammonium nitrogen, fluorides and total iron. Algebroid Yang-Mills Theories
A framework for constructing new kinds of gauge theories is suggested.
Essentially it consists in replacing Lie algebras by Lie or Courant algebroids.
Besides presenting novel topological theories defined in arbitrary spacetime
dimensions, we show that equipping Lie algebroids E with a fiber metric having
sufficiently many E-Killing vectors leads to an astonishingly mild deformation
of ordinary Yang-Mills theories: Additional fields turn out to carry no
propagating modes. Instead they serve as moduli parameters gluing together in
part different Yang-Mills theories. This leads to a symmetry enhancement at
critical points of these fields, as is also typical for String effective field

Connes-Lott model building on the two-sphere
In this work we examine generalized Connes-Lott models on the two-sphere. The
Hilbert space of the continuum spectral triple is taken as the space of
sections of a twisted spinor bundle, allowing for nontrivial topological
structure (magnetic monopoles). The finitely generated projective module over
the full algebra is also taken as topologically non-trivial, which is possible
over . We also construct a real spectral triple enlarging this Hilbert

The effect of local thermal fluctuations on the folding kinetics: a study from the perspective of the nonextensive statistical mechanics
Protein folding is a universal process, very fast and accurate, which works
consistently (as it should be) in a wide range of physiological conditions. The
present work is based on three premises, namely: () folding reaction is a
process with two consecutive and independent stages, namely the search
mechanism and the overall productive stabilization; () the folding kinetics
results from a mechanism as fast as can be; and () at nanoscale
dimensions, local thermal fluctuations may have important role on the folding
kinetics. Here the first stage of folding process (search mechanism) is focused
exclusively. The effects and consequences of local thermal fluctuations on the
configurational kinetics, treated here in the context of non extensive
statistical mechanics, is analyzed in detail through the dependence of the
characteristic time of folding () on the temperature and on the
nonextensive parameter .The model used consists of effective residues
forming a chain of 27 beads, which occupy different sites of a D infinite
lattice, representing a single protein chain in solution. The configurational
evolution, treated by Monte Carlo simulation, is driven mainly by the change in

Developing a framework for the analysis of power through depotentia
Stakeholder participation in tourism policy-making is usually perceived as providing a means of empowerment. However participatory processes drawing upon stakeholders from traditionally empowered backgrounds may provide the means of removing empowerment from stakeholders. Such an outcome would be in contradiction to the claims that participatory processes improve both inclusivity and sustainability. In order to form an understanding of the sources through which empowerment may be removed, an analytical perspective has been developed deriving from LukesĂŻÂżÂœs views of power dating from 1974. This perspective considers the concept of depotentia as the removal of ĂŻÂżÂœpower toĂŻÂżÂœ without speculating upon the underlying intent and also provides for the multidimensionality of power to be examined within a single study. The application of this analytical perspective has been tested upon findings of the government-commissioned report of the Countryside and Community Research Unit in 2005. The survey and report investigated the progress of Local Access Forums in England created in response to the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000. Consideration of the data from this perspective permits the classification of individual sources of depotentia which can each be addressed and potentially enable stakeholder groups to reverse loss of empowerment where it has occurred
