    Effects of forest fragmentation on the vertical stratification of neotropical bats

    Vertical stratification is a key component of the biological complexity of rainforests. Understanding community- and species-level responses to disturbance across forest strata is paramount for evidence-based conservation and management. However, even for bats, known to extensively explore multiple layers of the complex three-dimensional forest space, studies are biased towards understory-based surveys and only few assessments of vertical stratification were done in fragmented landscapes. Using both ground and canopy mist-nets, we investigated how the vertical structure of bat assemblages is influenced by forest fragmentation in the experimentally fragmented landscape of the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, Central Amazon, Brazil. Over a three year-period, we captured 3077 individuals of 46 species in continuous forest (CF) and in 1, 10 and 100 ha forest fragments. In both CF and forest fragments, the upper forest strata sustained more diverse bat assemblages than the equivalent understory layer, and the midstory layers had significantly higher bat abundance in fragments than in CF. Artibeus lituratus and Rhinophylla pumilio exhibited significant shifts in their vertical stratification patterns between CF and fragments (e.g. R. pumilio was more associated with the upper strata in fragments than in CF). Altogether, our study suggests that fragmentation modulates the vertical stratification of bat assemblages

    Vortex solutions of the Lifshitz-Chern-Simons theory

    We study vortex-like solutions to the Lifshitz-Chern-Simons theory. We find that such solutions exists and have a logarithmically divergent energy, which suggests that a Kostelitz-Thouless transition may occur, in which voxtex-antivortex pairs are created above a critical temperature. Following a suggestion made by Callan and Wilzcek for the global U(1) scalar field model, we study vortex solutions of the Lifshitz-Chern-Simons model formulated on the hyperbolic plane, finding that, as expected, the resulting configurations have finite energy.     What if the Masses of the First Two Quark Families are not Generated by the Standard Higgs?

    We point out that, in the context of the SM, V132+V232|V^2_{13}| + | V^2_{23}| is expected to be large, of order one. The fact that V132+V2321.6×103|V^2_{13}| + |V^2_{23}| \approx 1.6 \times 10^{-3} motivates the introduction of a symmetry S which leads to VCKM=1 ⁣ ⁣ ⁣IV_{CKM} ={1\>\!\!\!\mathrm{I}} , with only the third generation of quarks acquiring mass. We consider two scenarios for generating the mass of the first two quark generations and full quark mixing. One consists of the introduction of a second Higgs doublet which is neutral under S. The second scenario consists of assuming New Physics at a high energy scale , contributing to the masses of light quark generations, in an effective field theory approach. This last scenario leads to couplings of the Higgs particle to sss\overline s and ccc \overline c which are significantly enhanced with respect to those of the SM. In both schemes, one has scalar-mediated flavour- changing neutral currents which are naturally suppressed. Flavour violating top decays are predicted in the second scenario at the level \mbox{Br} (t \rightarrow h c ) \geq 5\times 10^{-5}.Comment: 11 pages, 1 figur

    Transport Processes in Metal-Insulator Granular Layers

    Tunnel transport processes are considered in a square lattice of metallic nanogranules embedded into insulating host to model tunnel conduction in real metal/insulator granular layers. Based on a simple model with three possible charging states (±\pm, or 0) of a granule and three kinetic processes (creation or recombination of a ±\pm pair, and charge transfer) between neighbor granules, the mean-field kinetic theory is developed. It describes the interplay between charging energy and temperature and between the applied electric field and the Coulomb fields by the non-compensated charge density. The resulting charge and current distributions are found to be essentially different in the free area (FA), between the metallic contacts, or in the contact areas (CA), beneath those contacts. Thus, the steady state dc transport is only compatible with zero charge density and ohmic resistivity in FA, but charge accumulation and non-ohmic behavior are \emph{necessary} for conduction over CA. The approximate analytic solutions are obtained for characteristic regimes (low or high charge density) of such conduction.     Atomistic origins of the phase transition mechanism in Ge2Sb2Te5

    Combined static and molecular dynamics first-principles calculations are used to identify a direct structural link between the metastable crystalline and amorphous phases of Ge2Sb2Te5. We find that the phase transition is driven by the displacement of Ge atoms along the rocksalt [111] direction from the stable-octahedron to high-energy-unstable tetrahedron sites close to the intrinsic vacancy regions, which give rise to the formation of local 4-fold coordinated motifs. Our analyses suggest that the high figures of merit of Ge2Sb2Te5 are achieved from the optimal combination of intrinsic vacancies provided by Sb2Te3 and the instability of the tetrahedron sites provided by GeTe

    Epstein-Barr virus-associated cholestatic hepatitis

    Epstein-Barr virus infection is common in children, usually presenting as infectious mononucleosis, including fever, tonsillitis and lymphadenopathy associated with self-resolving increase in transaminases. Cholestasis is rare in children with only a few cases reported but it was described in up to 55% of the adult population affected. We present a case of a 6-year-old boy with fever, vomiting and choluria. The physical examination showed hepatomegaly and jaundice and was otherwise unremarkable. The laboratory studies revealed increased transaminases (aspartate aminotransferase 97 U/L, alanine aminotransferase 166 U/L), hyperbilirubinaemia (total bilirubin 3.2 mg/dL, direct bilirubin 2.89 mg/dL) and increased γ-glutamyl transpeptidase (114 mg/dL). Urine urobilinogen was increased. The abdominal ultrasound showed hepatomegaly. Epstein-Barr viral capsid antibody IgM was positive and IgG was negative. Serological studies for other viruses were negative. We underline the need to consider Epstein-Barr virus in the cholestatic hepatitis differential diagnosis, in order to avoid unnecessary investigations

    Bounds on gamma from CP violation measurements in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S

    We study the determination of gamma from CP-violating observables in B -> pi+ pi- and B -> psi K_S. This determination requires theoretical input to one combination of hadronic parameters. We show that a mild assumption about this quantity may allow bounds to be placed on gamma, but we stress the pernicious effects that an eightfold discrete ambiguity has on such an analysis. The bounds are discussed as a function of the direct (C) and interference (S) CP-violating observables obtained from time-dependent B -> pi+ pi- decays, and their behavior in the presence of new physics effects in B-Bbar mixing is studied.     Non(anti)commutative superspace with coordinate-dependent deformation

    We consider non(anti)commutative superspace with coordinate dependent deformation parameters CαβC^{\alpha\beta}. We show that a chiral N=1/2{\cal N}=1/2 supersymmetry can be defined and that chiral and antichiral superfields are still closed under the Moyal-Weyl associative product implementing the deformation. A consistent N=1/2{\cal N}=1/2 Super Yang-Mills deformed theory can be constructed provided CαβC^{\alpha\beta} satisfies a suitable condition which can be connected with the graviphoton background at the origin of the deformation.
