    Cross-Correlation analysis of WMAP and EGRET in Wavelet Space

    We cross correlate the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) first year data and the diffuse gamma-ray intensity maps from the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) using spherical wavelet approaches. Correlations at 99.7% significance level have been detected, at scales around 15∘15^{\circ} in the WMAP foreground cleaned W-band and Q-band maps, based on data from regions that are outside the most conservative WMAP foreground mask; no significant correlation is found with the Tegmark cleaned map. The detected correlation is most likely of Galactic origin, and thus can help us probing the origins of possible Galactic foreground residuals and ultimately removing them from measured microwave sky maps.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

    Distributed Robust Control for Systems with Structured Uncertainties

    We present D-Phi iteration: an algorithm for distributed, localized, and scalable robust control of systems with structured uncertainties. This algorithm combines the System Level Synthesis (SLS) parametrization for distributed control with stability criteria from L1, L-infinity, and nu robust control. We show in simulation that this algorithm achieves near-optimal nominal performance (within 12% of the LQR controller) while doubling or tripling the stability margin (depending on the stability criterion) compared to the LQR controller. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first distributed and localized algorithm for structured robust control; furthermore, algorithm complexity depends only on the size of local neighborhoods and is independent of global system size. We additionally characterize the suitability of different robustness criteria for distributed and localized computation, and discuss open questions on the topic of distributed robust control.Comment: Submitted to CDC 202

    Poletti and Wiltshire have shown that, with the exception of a pure cosmological constant, the solution of a dilaton black hole in the background of de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe, does not exist in the presence of one Liouville-type dilaton potential. Here with the combination of three Liouville-type dilaton potentials, we obtain the dilaton black hole solutions in the background of de Sitter or anti-de Sitter universe.Comment: 13 pages,to appear in Phys.     Comparison between Windowed FFT and Hilbert-Huang Transform for Analyzing Time Series with Poissonian Fluctuations: A Case Study

    Hilbert-Huang Transform (HHT) is a novel data analysis technique for nonlinear and non-stationary data. We present a time-frequency analysis of both simulated light curves and an X-ray burst from the X-ray burster 4U 1702-429 with both the HHT and the Windowed Fast Fourier Transform (WFFT) methods. Our results show that the HHT method has failed in all cases for light curves with Poissonian fluctuations which are typical for all photon counting instruments used in astronomy, whereas the WFFT method can sensitively detect the periodic signals in the presence of Poissonian fluctuations; the only drawback of the WFFT method is that it cannot detect sharp frequency variations accurately.Comment: 10 pages, 12 figure

    Estimating the Social Welfare Effects of New Zealand Apple Imports

    This paper provides a demonstration of how a comprehensive economic framework, which takes into account both the gains from trade and the costs of invasive species outbreaks, can inform decision-makers when making quarantine decisions. Using the theoretical framework developed in Cook and Fraser (2008) an empirical estimation is made of the economic welfare consequences for Australia of allowing quarantine-restricted trade in New Zealand apples to take place. The results suggest the returns to Australian society from importing New Zealand apples are likely to be negative. The price differential between the landed product with SPS measures in place and the autarkic price is insufficient to outweigh the increase in expected damage resulting from increased fire blight risk.     A Cosmology-Independent Calibration of Gamma-Ray Burst Luminosity Relations and the Hubble Diagram

    An important concern in the application of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) to cosmology is that the calibration of GRB luminosity/energy relations depends on the cosmological model, due to the lack of a sufficient low-redshift GRB sample. In this paper, we present a new method to calibrate GRB relations in a cosmology-independent way. Since objects at the same redshift should have the same luminosity distance and since the distance moduli of Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) obtained directly from observations are completely cosmology independent, we obtain the distance modulus of a GRB at a given redshift by interpolating from the Hubble diagram of SNe Ia. Then we calibrate seven GRB relations without assuming a particular cosmological model and construct a GRB Hubble diagram to constrain cosmological parameters. From the 42 GRBs at 1.4<z≤6.61.4<z\le6.6, we obtain ΩM=0.25−0.05+0.04\Omega_{\rm M}=0.25_{-0.05}^{+0.04}, ΩΛ=0.75−0.04+0.05\Omega_{\Lambda}=0.75_{-0.04}^{+0.05} for the flat Λ\LambdaCDM model, and for the dark energy model with a constant equation of state w0=−1.05−0.40+0.27w_0=-1.05_{-0.40}^{+0.27}, which is consistent with the concordance model in a 1-σ\sigma confidence region.Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, 1 table, now matches the editorially revised version; accepted for publication in ApJ (vol 685)
