A first-principles study of tunneling magnetoresistance in Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) magnetic tunnel junctions
We investigated the spin-dependent transport properties of Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001)
magnetic tunneling junctions (MTJs) on the basis of first-principles
calculations of the electronic structures and the ballistic conductance. The
calculated tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratio of a Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJ
was about 160%, which was much smaller than that of a Fe/MgO/Fe(001) MTJ
(1600%) for the same barrier thickness. However, there was an evanescent state
with delta 1 symmetry in the energy gap around the Fermi level of normal spinel
MgAl2O4, indicating the possibility of a large TMR in Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJs.
The small TMR ratio of the Fe/MgAl2O4/Fe(001) MTJ was due to new conductive
channels in the minority spin states resulting from a band-folding effect in
the two-dimensional (2-D) Brillouin zone of the in-plane wave vector (k//) of
the Fe electrode. Since the in-plane cell size of MgAl2O4 is twice that of the
primitive in-plane cell size of bcc Fe, the bands in the boundary edges are
folded, and minority-spin states coupled with the delta 1 evanescent state in
the MgAl2O4 barrier appear at k//=0, which reduces the TMR ratio of the MTJs

A giant subcutaneous leiomyosarcoma arising in the inguinal region
BACKGROUND: Subcutaneous leiomyosarcoma is a rare condition that accounts for 1% to 2% of all superficial soft tissue malignancies. Approximately 10% of cases arise in the trunk, although the extremities are the most commonly affected. CASE PRESENTATION: We report herein the case of a 31-year-old man with a subcutaneous leiomyosarcoma, measuring 124 × 105 mm, arising in the left inguinal region. A wide local excision (with a resection margin ≥ 20 mm) was performed. Histological examination of the resected specimen revealed a leiomyosarcoma with high cellularity and two mitoses per 10 high-power fields. The patient remains well with no evidence of disease 5 years and 8 months after the operation. CONCLUSION: This is the first reported case of subcutaneous leiomyosarcoma arising in the inguinal region and also one of the largest tumors reported. The experience of this case and a review of the English-language literature (PubMed, National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, MD, USA) suggest that a resection margin of ≥ 10 mm is recommended when excising this rare tumor
Successful Treatment in a Case of Massive Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Paraneoplastic Syndrome
Paraneoplastic syndromes of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are not uncommon. However, the prognosis is poor and follow-up and improvement of paraneoplastic syndromes with treatment have been reported rarely. We report a successful case in an aged man of a massive HCC with paraneoplastic syndrome, treated by combined intraarterial chemotherapy and hepatic resection. Paraneoplastic syndrome (erythrocytosis and hyperlipidemia) was monitored throughout the treatment and erythropoietin (EPO) mRNA also was analyzed in the resected liver. The hemoglobin level and serum levels of EPO and total cholesterol (T-cho) decreased dramatically with treatment, along with a decrease in serum levels of α-fetoprotein and protein induced by vitamin vitamin K absence II (PIVKA-II). Semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) revealed that the residual cancer expressed EPO RNA but the nontumor tissue did not. This was a rare case of paraneoplastic syndrome of HCC that was treated successfully. This case indicates that paraneoplastic syndrome reflected tumor progression and that serum levels of both EPO and T-cho might be used as tumor markers
