Self-consistent description of nuclear compressional modes
Isoscalar monopole and dipole compressional modes are computed for a variety
of closed-shell nuclei in a relativistic random-phase approximation to three
different parametrizations of the Walecka model with scalar self-interactions.
Particular emphasis is placed on the role of self-consistency which by itself,
and with little else, guarantees the decoupling of the spurious
isoscalar-dipole strength from the physical response and the conservation of
the vector current. A powerful new relation is introduced to quantify the
violation of the vector current in terms of various ground-state form-factors.
For the isoscalar-dipole mode two distinct regions are clearly identified: (i)
a high-energy component that is sensitive to the size of the nucleus and scales
with the compressibility of the model and (ii) a low-energy component that is
insensitivity to the nuclear compressibility. A fairly good description of both
compressional modes is obtained by using a ``soft'' parametrization having a
compression modulus of K=224 MeV.Comment: 28 pages and 10 figures; submitted to PR
Tomato: a crop species amenable to improvement by cellular and molecular methods
Tomato is a crop plant with a relatively small DNA content per haploid genome and a well developed genetics. Plant regeneration from explants and protoplasts is feasable which led to the development of efficient transformation procedures.
In view of the current data, the isolation of useful mutants at the cellular level probably will be of limited value in the genetic improvement of tomato. Protoplast fusion may lead to novel combinations of organelle and nuclear DNA (cybrids), whereas this technique also provides a means of introducing genetic information from alien species into tomato. Important developments have come from molecular approaches. Following the construction of an RFLP map, these RFLP markers can be used in tomato to tag quantitative traits bred in from related species. Both RFLP's and transposons are in the process of being used to clone desired genes for which no gene products are known. Cloned genes can be introduced and potentially improve specific properties of tomato especially those controlled by single genes. Recent results suggest that, in principle, phenotypic mutants can be created for cloned and characterized genes and will prove their value in further improving the cultivated tomato.
Search for the standard model Higgs boson decaying to a pair in events with no charged leptons and large missing transverse energy using the full CDF data set
We report on a search for the standard model Higgs boson produced in
association with a vector boson in the full data set of proton-antiproton
collisions at TeV recorded by the CDF II detector at the
Tevatron, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb. We
consider events having no identified charged lepton, a transverse energy
imbalance, and two or three jets, of which at least one is consistent with
originating from the decay of a quark. We place 95% credibility level upper
limits on the production cross section times standard model branching fraction
for several mass hypotheses between 90 and . For a Higgs
boson mass of , the observed (expected) limit is 6.7

association with a W boson in sqrt(s) = 1.96 TeV p-pbar collision data
collected with the CDF II detector at the Tevatron corresponding to an
integrated luminosity of 9.45 fb-1. In events consistent with the decay of the
Higgs boson to a bottom-quark pair and the W boson to an electron or muon and a
neutrino, we set 95% credibility level upper limits on the WH production cross
section times the H->bb branching ratio as a function of Higgs boson mass. At a
Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV/c2 we observe (expect) a limit of 4.9 (2.8) times

Human macrophages differentiated in the presence of vitamin D3 restrict dengue virus infection and innate responses by downregulating mannose receptor expression
ABSTARCT: Severe dengue disease is associated with high viral loads and overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting impairment in the control of dengue virus (DENV) and the mechanisms that regulate cytokine production. Vitamin D3 has been described as an important modulator of immune responses to several pathogens. Interestingly, increasing evidence has associated vitamin D with decreased DENV infection and early disease recovery, yet the molecular mechanisms whereby vitamin D reduces DENV infection are not well understood. METHODS AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Macrophages represent important cell targets for DENV replication and consequently, they are key drivers of dengue disease. In this study we evaluated the effect of vitamin D3 on the differentiation of monocyte-derived macrophages (MDM) and their susceptibility and cytokine response to DENV. Our data demonstrate that MDM differentiated in the presence of vitamin D3 (D3-MDM) restrict DENV infection and moderate the classical inflammatory cytokine response. Mechanistically, vitamin D3-driven differentiation led to reduced surface expression of C-type lectins including the mannose receptor (MR, CD206) that is known to act as primary receptor for DENV attachment on macrophages and to trigger of immune signaling. Consequently, DENV bound less efficiently to vitamin D3-differentiated macrophages, leading to lower infection. Interestingly, IL-4 enhanced infection was reduced in D3-MDM by restriction of MR expression. Moreover, we detected moderate secretion of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-10 in D3-MDM, likely due to less MR engagement during DENV infection. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:
Our findings reveal a molecular mechanism by which vitamin D counteracts DENV infection and progression of severe disease, and indicates its potential relevance as a preventive or therapeutic candidate
Production of pizero and eta mesons at large transverse momenta in pp and pBe interactions at 530 and 800 GeV/c
We present results on the production of high transverse momentum pizero and
eta mesons in pp and pBe interactions at 530 and 800 GeV/c. The data span the
kinematic ranges: 1 < p_T < 10 GeV/c in transverse momentum and 1.5 units in
rapidity. The inclusive pizero cross sections are compared with next-to-leading
order QCD calculations and to expectations based on a phenomenological

Uses and management of saltmarshes: A global survey
Saltmarshes are important coastal fringe ecosystems supporting a myriad of coastal uses and users. However, saltmarshes have undergone a significant period of global decline, losing 25%–50% of their coverage due to a range of drivers, but mainly as a result of anthropogenic pressures and land-use change. While the value of these coastal systems to society is recognised, global data are fragmented, patchy, and often restricted to local case studies. There is currently no comprehensive understanding of the global variation of ecosystem services, benefits and management practices available. This pioneering study addresses this by investigating the socio-ecological dimension of global variation in ecosystem service provision, and how this is being managed by and for different saltmarsh users. Through a global online questionnaire survey (n = 438) targeting professional saltmarsh researchers and practitioners representing 40 countries across 5 continents, this paper presents an overview of saltmarsh ecosystem services, key drivers influencing management and the variation in factors that influence them. Analysis indicates considerable variation, with geographical location (‘continent’) being the most common moderator, influencing perceptions of saltmarshes, the prioritisation of ecosystem services and management perceptions. Finally, the paper presents a series of recommendations, including the development of an interdisciplinary, international research programme to support restoration and conservation of saltmarshes worldwide
Measurement of the W+W- Production Cross Section in ppbar Collisions at sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using Dilepton Events
We present a measurement of the W+W- production cross section using 184/pb of
ppbar collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV collected with the
Collider Detector at Fermilab. Using the dilepton decay channel W+W- ->
l+l-vvbar, where the charged leptons can be either electrons or muons, we find
17 candidate events compared to an expected background of 5.0+2.2-0.8 events.
The resulting W+W- production cross section measurement of sigma(ppbar -> W+W-)
= 14.6 +5.8 -5.1 (stat) +1.8 -3.0 (syst) +-0.9 (lum) pb agrees well with the

Measurement of the difference of CP-violating asymmetries in D0 -> K+K- and D0 ->pi+pi- decays at CDF
We report a measurement of the difference (Delta Acp) between time-integrated
CP--violating asymmetries in D0-> K+ K- and D0-> pi+pi- decays reconstructed in
the full data set of proton-antiproton collisions collected by the Collider
Detector at Fermilab, corresponding to 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. The
strong decay D*+->D0 pi+ is used to identify the charm meson at production as
D0 or anti-D0. We measure Delta Acp = [-0.62 +- 0.21 (stat) +- 0.10 (syst)] %,
which differs from zero by 2.7 Gaussian standard deviations.This result
supports similar evidence for CP violation in charm-quark decays obtained in
